Book excerpt: Andrew Warner was born in about 1595 in Great Waltham, Essex, England. His parents were John Warner and Mary Purchas. He married Mary Humfrey (1602-1656), daughter of Robert Humphrey and Ann Holland, 5 October 1624. They had eight children. They emigrated in 1631 and settled first in Cambridge, Massachusetts and then in Hartford, Connecticut. Andrew married Esther Wakefield Selden (1617-1693), a widow, in about 1656. They had one son, Jacob. Andrew died in Hadley, Massachusetts in 1684. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in England, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Illinois and Kansas.

Before his death in 1992, the author's father wrote a series of letters containing the stories told to him as a child in the early twentieth century. He researched the public records of both the Historical Societies and the Quaker Meetinghouse to build upon the actual accounts of his family members. He spent the last twenty years of his life collecting this historical information. In the mid-nineteenth century, the author's great-grandfather began building on the names and facts about family members. The information he gathered was also used to write this book. Actual letters written from the foxholes of the civil war are typical of the documents used to complete this book. Our past can only be retrieved from what we remember and from the historical records that have been kept. Without memories and without records, we have no personal history!

Otherness thus posits a liminal and largely transversal site of resistance to monological representations of Western identity, history and canon, which are now displayed inherently crossbred and built on the occulting and alienating of difference. With this in view, the author carries out a close reading of the works and scholarly statements of J. M. Coetzee and Marina Warner by taking as the point of departure the intertextualist approaches that most attend to the phenomenon of alterity against the critical discourses of modern representation. Fully installed in the revision of canon policies, Foe and Indigo re-read Eurocentric institutionalised forms of othering at the same time they posit new and suggestive rehearsals of identity languages via literature. Intertextual fiction thus turns out to be a powerful instrument to render alterity visible and agential in the discourses of reality. Ultimately, alterity is enabled to speak and invite social change and ethical awareness without denying the history of its alienation.
