Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It never was a war, any more than there's war between man and ants." At first, they were just a joke, feeble blobs barely able to move in the oppressive gravity of Earth. Within days, they had become the single biggest threat in the history of humanity. When H.G. Wells penned The War of the Worlds in 1898, London was the center of the known human universe; Wells' dark novel sets about destroying civilization by striking at it's most glorious and shining city, at a time when man was decades away from space travel. The swift and terrible attacks of the Martians lay waste to the technological firepower of the esteemed British military, and the populace shifts from apathetic ambivalence to panic. Not just a science fiction tale, Wells' story takes to task the easy, taken-for-granted lives of the citizens of a superpower, and his themes still ring true over a century later. Follow the harrowing flight of the narrator as he scraps and claws for survival as the human race is swept aside by ruthless invaders; His life quickly devolves to that of an animal, hiding and cowering in the dank rubble of a ruined city. The invaders are advanced and merciless; they decimate the armies with "heat rays" and blast toxic "black death" into the choked streets of London. No one is safe. Wells' bleak masterpiece is essential reading; it laid the groundwork for thousands of stories which followed.

Wells' classic novel in which Martian lifeforms take over planet Earth. As the Martians emerge, they construct giant killing machines - armed with heatrays - that are impervious to attack. Advancing upon London they destroy everything in their path. Everything, except the few humans they collect in metal traps. Victorian England is a place in which the steam engine is state-of-the-art technology and powered flight is just a dream. Mankind is helpless against the killing machines from Mars, and soon the survivors are left living in a new stone age.

World War I, also known as “the Great War” and “the War to End All Wars,” devastated much of Europe from 1914 to 1918. While the war dramatically changed the world’s political landscape for generations to come, it also brought forth a wide range of powerful and memorable works of literature. This collection includes pieces such as Edith Wharton’s “Coming Home,” Ernest Hemingway’s “In Another Country,” and W. Somerset Maugham’s “The Traitor.” Fourteen classic stories from World War I will give readers a deeper understanding of the lives of the people involved in the conflict.

Book excerpt: The reader should grasp clearly the date at which this book was written. It was done in 1907: it appeared in various magazines as a serial in 1908 and it was published in the Fall of that year. At that time the aeroplane was, for most people, merely a rumour and the "Sausage" held the air. The contemporary reader has all the advantage of ten years' experience since this story was imagined. He can correct his author at a dozen points and estimate the value of these warnings by the standard of a decade of realities. The book is weak on anti-aircraft guns, for example, and still more negligent of submarines. Much, no doubt, will strike the reader as quaint and limited but upon much the writer may not unreasonably plume himself. The interpretation of the German spirit must have read as a caricature in 1908. Was it a caricature? Prince Karl seemed a fantasy then. Reality has since copied Prince Carl with an astonishing faithfulness. Is it too much to hope that some democratic "Bert" may not ultimately get even with his Highness? Our author tells us in this book, as he has told us in others, more especially in The World Set Free, and as he has been telling us this year in his War and the Future, that if mankind goes on with war, the smash-up of civilization is inevitable. It is chaos or the United States of the World for mankind. There is no other choice. Ten years have but added an enormous conviction to the message of this book. It remains essentially right, a pamphlet story--in support of the League to Enforce Peace. K.

When he reveals the prototype of a time-traveling machine to his peers, he's met with skepticism at first...until he returns one week later, disheveled, bloody, and with a fantastic story to tell. Book excerpt: Following the development of massive airships, naïve Londoner Bert Smallways becomes accidentally involved in a German plot to invade America by air and reduce New York to rubble. But although bombers devastate the city, they cannot overwhelm the country, and their attack leads not to victory but to the beginning of a new and horrific age for humanity. And so dawns the era of Total War, in which brutal aerial bombardments reduce the great cultures of the twentieth century to nothing. As civilization collapses around the Englishman, now stranded in a ruined America, he clings to only one hope - that he might return to London, and marry the woman he loves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment. The planet Mars, I scarcely need remind the reader, revolves about the sun at a mean distance of 140,000,000 miles, and the light and heat it receives from the sun is barely half of that received by this world. It must be, if the nebular hypothesis has any truth, older than our world; and long before this earth ceased to be molten, life upon its surface must have begun its course. The fact that it is scarcely one seventh of the volume of the earth must have accelerated its cooling to the temperature at which life could begin. It has air and water and all that is necessary for the support of animated existence.
