Book excerpt: The Fairy Books, also known as "Coloured" Fairy Books, are a collection of twelve books of fairy tales, each associated with a different color. Andrew Land gathered them from various countries and translated them by Lang's wife and other translators. They also retold many of the stories. The collection has been enormously influential. While he did not collect the stories directly from oral tradition, he can lay claim to the first English translation of many of them. It was first published in 1904. Andrew Lang was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic who lived from 1844 to 1912. Although he did not collect the stories from oral tradition himself, the breadth of his sources, who had originally collected them (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made the collections enormously influential. Many of the stories were first told in English by Lang. Although Lang made the majority of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and retelling of the actual stories, as stated in the prefaces. This book includes an author biography as well as a table of contents that is linked to each chapter (Kindle edition). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high-quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Violet Fairy Book – Illustrated by H. J. Ford’ forms part of Andrew Lang’s ‘Coloured’ Fairy Books series - a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour, and all in all, 437 tales from a wide array of cultures and countries are presented. Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist and literary critic, with a passion for folkloric story telling. Most of his volumes (including this, ‘The Violet Fairy Book’) were beautifully illustrated by Henry J. Ford (1860 – 1941), an inordinately talented artist who came to public attention with his illustrations for Lang. The books captured the imagination of British children, and later became worldwide bestsellers in the 1880s and 1890s. This ‘Violet Book’ contains many traditional fairy tales such as 'The Finest Liar in the World', 'The Lute Player', The Two Frogs', The History of Dwarf Long Nose', 'The Monkey and the Jellyfish', 'The Boys with the Golden Stars', 'Virgilius the Sorcerer', 'Morgarzea and his son' and many more. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Book excerpt: This is the whole truth of the matter. I have said so before, and I say so again. But nothing will prevent children from thinking that I invented the stories, or some ladies from being of the same opinion. But who really invented the stories nobody knows; it is all so long ago, long before reading and writing were invented. The first of the stories actually written down, were written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, or on Babylonian cakes of clay, three or four thousand years before our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our stories are almost all old, some from Ireland, before that island was as celebrated for her wrongs as for her verdure; some from Asia, made, I dare say, before the Aryan invasion; some from Moydart, Knoydart, Morar and Ardnamurchan, where the sea streams run like great clear rivers and the saw-edged hills are blue, and men remember Prince Charlie. Some are from Portugal, where the golden fruits grow in the Garden of the Hesperides; and some are from wild Wales, and were told at Arthur's Court; and others come from the firesides of the kinsmen of the Welsh, the Bretons. There are also modern tales by a learned Scandinavian named Topelius. All the stories were translated or adapted by Mrs. Lang, except 'The Jogi's Punishment' and 'Moti,' done by Major Campbell out of the Push-too language; 'How Brave Walter hunted Wolves,' which, with 'Little Lasse' and 'The Raspberry Worm,' was done from Topelius by Miss Harding; and 'The Sea King's Gift,' by Miss Christie, from the same author. It has been suggested to the Editor that children and parents and guardians would like 'The Grey True Ghost-Story Book.' He knows that the children would like it well, and he would gladly give it to them; but about the taste of fond anxious mothers and kind aunts he is not quite so certain. Before he was twelve the Editor knew true ghost stories enough to fill a volume. They were a pure joy till bedtime, but then, and later, were not wholly a source of unmixed pleasure. At that time the Editor was not afraid of the dark, for he thought, 'If a ghost is here, we can't see him.' But when older and better informed persons said that ghosts brought their own light with them (which is too true), then one's emotions were such as parents do not desire the young to endure. For this reason 'The Grey True Ghost-Story Book' is never likely to be illustrated by Mr. Ford.
