Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Video Art of Sylvia Safdie brings into focus the complete video oeuvre of a pioneering Canadian artist. Tracing the development of Safdie's work and its implications for the future of media art, this volume provides a stunning perspective on her videos and sets a new standard for the presentation of video art in book form. Safdie's principal video works are presented in the form of more than 200 images, selected and arranged to suggest the content, rhythm, and movement of the videos themselves. Alongside the rich illustrations, the book explores Safdie's video art through a thoughtful introduction to the artist and two insightful critical essays. Eric Lewis relates her videos to her works in other media, considers how she poses key questions in the philosophy of art, and addresses issues concerning Jewish art and identity. He discusses the complex relationship between Safdie's video images and the improvised music she often employs as soundtracks. An essay by music scholar and conductor Eleanor Stubley explores the relationship between the body and mind in Safdie's videos, shedding light on the emotive and sensorial qualities of the breathing body. A vibrant appeal to both the eye and the mind, The Video Art of Sylvia Safdie showcases an artist at the vanguard of video and intermedia art and demonstrates how her work is representative of the next stage in artistic explorations of time, change, corporeality, and our place in nature.

This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay sheds light on the future of the video game industry, explicates how advanced technologies can revolutionize the video game industry, and demystifies why esports have become popular as a type of spectator sport in the 21st century . The future of the video industry will not only be characterized by dynamism as it continues to metaphorically evolve, but will also be eminently auspicious for competitors in the video game industry. Technological advancements have profoundly changed the video game industry and have rendered it all the more technology-driven by sophisticated technologies. The video industry shows no signs of contracting anytime in the imminent future. The future of the video game industry is apt be more sublime than envisioned, especially as technological advancements are made which can further revolutionize the behemoth video game industry. In 2024, it is possible to play video games in an ultra-high definition 4,000 pixels resolution. In other words, the future of the video game industry will not be solely limited to shovelware mobile games pervading the video game industry. “The global gaming market was valued at $151,550,000,000 in 2019 and is expected to reach a value of $256,970,000,000 by 2025, registering a compound annual growth rate of 9.17% over the forecast period of 2020–2025. Game developers across emerging economies are continually striving to enhance gamer's experience, launching, and rewriting codes for diverse console/platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC, which are incorporated into one product provided to the gamers through the cloud platform. The emergence of cloud gaming” (“Gaming Market - Growth,” n.d.) has helped to substantially drive growth in the video game market. In the coming years, cloud gaming, mobile gaming, PC gaming, and console gaming are apt to become all the more prevalent as entertainment options among customers. “Recent advances in advanced cloud technology have turned the idea of cloud gaming into reality. In cloud gaming, the server, where all the games are stored, does all the computation work, which includes game scene rendering, game logic processing video encoding, and video streaming” (“Gaming Market - Growth,” n.d.). The rising popularity of esports, gaming live streams, and gameplay videos have also contributed to the growth of the behemoth video game industry. It stands to preponderantly reason that the future of the video game industry will not only allow the video game industry to reach an unprecedented size, but will also attract more competitors to enter the sizable video game industry. In the coming years, similarly to video streaming subscription services, such as Netflix and Hulu, customers are apt to have more video game streaming subscription services available to them with a broader selection of video games to choose from playing. In other words, for a monthly subscription fee, customers will be able to have the option to stream a myriad of video games on their video game home consoles and/or computers. In the coming years, video game streaming subscription services is apt to offer a plethora of video game streaming services. “This new sector is also seen as a serious competitor for the game market” (“The Impact Of,” 2019). The console video game segment is no longer the utmost lucrative segment of the sizable video game market. In the coming years, the future of the video game industry is apt to offer far more to customers than merely just new home console video games and new “virtual reality and augmented reality” (Koss, 2020) video game experiences. In 2019, the video game industry generated over $6,300,000,000 in revenue (Koss, 2020) from “augmented reality and virtual reality” (Koss, 2020) video games. Much to the relief of gamers, “companies are busy making virtual reality experiences more consumer-friendly, and it is only a matter of time before both the weight and price of virtual reality headsets drop” (Koss, 2020). Modern virtual reality video games are a far cry from the outmoded retro virtual reality video games of the 20th Century. In stark contrast virtual reality video games, augmented reality video games do not require the usage of a bulky headset to play and allow gamers to “interact with reality and not be removed from it” (Koss, 2020) when playing an augmented reality video game.

Book excerpt: Do video games cause violent, aggressive behavior? Can online games help us learn? When it comes to video games, these are often the types of questions raised by popular media, policy makers, scholars, and the general public. In this collection, international experts review the latest research findings in the field of digital game studies and weigh in on the actual physical, social, and psychological effects of video games. Taking a broad view of the industry from the moral panic of its early days up to recent controversies surrounding games like Grand Theft Auto, contributors explore the effects of games through a range of topics including health hazards/benefits, education, violence and aggression, addiction, cognitive performance, and gaming communities. Interdisciplinary and accessibly written, The Video Game Debate reveals that the arguments surrounding the game industry are far from black and white, and opens the door to richer conversation and debate amongst students, policy makers, and scholars alike.

This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction: “Nicholas Carr has written a Silent Spring for the literary mind.”—Michael Agger, Slate “Is Google making us stupid?” When Nicholas Carr posed that question, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story, he tapped into a well of anxiety about how the Internet is changing us. He also crystallized one of the most important debates of our time: As we enjoy the Net’s bounties, are we sacrificing our ability to read and think deeply? Now, Carr expands his argument into the most compelling exploration of the Internet’s intellectual and cultural consequences yet published. As he describes how human thought has been shaped through the centuries by “tools of the mind”—from the alphabet to maps, to the printing press, the clock, and the computer—Carr interweaves a fascinating account of recent discoveries in neuroscience by such pioneers as Michael Merzenich and Eric Kandel. Our brains, the historical and scientific evidence reveals, change in response to our experiences. The technologies we use to find, store, and share information can literally reroute our neural pathways. Building on the insights of thinkers from Plato to McLuhan, Carr makes a convincing case that every information technology carries an intellectual ethic—a set of assumptions about the nature of knowledge and intelligence. He explains how the printed book served to focus our attention, promoting deep and creative thought. In stark contrast, the Internet encourages the rapid, distracted sampling of small bits of information from many sources. Its ethic is that of the industrialist, an ethic of speed and efficiency, of optimized production and consumption—and now the Net is remaking us in its own image. We are becoming ever more adept at scanning and skimming, but what we are losing is our capacity for concentration, contemplation, and reflection. Part intellectual history, part popular science, and part cultural criticism, The Shallows sparkles with memorable vignettes—Friedrich Nietzsche wrestling with a typewriter, Sigmund Freud dissecting the brains of sea creatures, Nathaniel Hawthorne contemplating the thunderous approach of a steam locomotive—even as it plumbs profound questions about the state of our modern psyche. This is a book that will forever alter the way we think about media and our minds.

Book excerpt: This student-friendly book provides an accessible overview of the primary debates about the effects of video games. It expands on the original The Video Game Debate to address the new technologies that have emerged within the field of game studies over the last few years. Debates about the negative effects of video game play have been evident since their introduction in the 1970s, but the advent of online and mobile gaming has revived these concerns, reinvigorating old debates and generating brand new ones. The Video Game Debate 2 draws from the latest research findings from the top scholars of digital games research to address these concerns. The book explores key developments such as virtual and augmented reality, the use of micro-transactions, the integration of loot boxes, and the growth of mobile gaming and games for change (serious games). Furthermore, several new chapters explore contemporary debates around e-sports, gamification, sex and gender discrimination in games, and the use of games in therapy. This book offers students and scholars of games studies and digital media, as well as policymakers, the essential information they need to participate in the debate.

Humans have an extraordinary capacity to battle through adversity, but only if they have something to cling onto: a belief or hope that maybe, one day, things will be better. This idea sparked The Great Realization. Sharing the truths we may find hard to tell but also celebrating the things—from simple acts of kindness and finding joy in everyday activities, to the creativity within us all—that have brought us together during lockdown, it gives us hope in this time of global crisis. Written for his younger brother and sister in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tomos Roberts’s heartfelt poem is as timely as it is timeless. Its message of hope and resilience, of rebirth and renewal, has captured the hearts of children and adults all over the globe—and the glimpse it offers of a fairer, kinder, more sustainable world continues to inspire thousands every day. With Tomos Roberts’s heartfelt poem and beautiful illustrations by award-winning artist Nomoco, The Great Realization is a profound work, at once striking and reassuring, reminding readers young and old that in the face of adversity there are still dreams to be dreamt and kindnesses to be shared and hope. There is still hope. We now call it The Great Realization and, yes, since then there have been many. But that’s the story of how it started . . . and why hindsight’s 2020.
