Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veil of Hebrew History: A Further Attempt to Lift It Verily through much tribulation of critical research must we of the present age enter into the kingdom. Verily, when criticism hath had its perfect work, we shall see - as never before - how indifferent are critical results to spiritual kingship. This work, like its predecessors, consists partly of certainties, partly of pioneering conjectures. Its object is to get behind the existing tradition, and so to recover, in an earlier and much more correct traditional form, what was believed by the Israelites respecting their past, or, as one might say, to dig down to the foundations of Israelite history. If the author's preceding works (since the Encyclop dia Biblica, vol. ii.) be considered, the reader will have a tolerably complete idea of what the author regards as important, and, on the whole, trustworthy, for historical purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lifting of the Veil: Introductory Lecture of the Course on Hebrew History and Literature If from a point of View, built up by centuries and millennia, we gaze upon the vast expanse of history spread before us, we cannot pause to search out the genesis of every episode or historic speech any more than from the mountain top we can, in describing the whole scene unfolded to View, pause to trace the beginning of each blade of grass or tree leaf, all of which combine to make up the whole, each of which offers more food for study than a lifetime can digest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 2006 text, Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: 'God with us'. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horrific 1915 earthquake that leveled tiny Manoppello, Italy, brought forth from the local church’s rubble one of Christendom’s long-lost, but most precious relics: the small cloth that lay on Jesus’s face in the tomb. Saint John speaks of it in his Gospel: “When Peter went into the tomb, he saw linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.” Tradition says that Our Lady herself laid this cloth on His face before He was wrapped in His shroud for burial. This small veil — now known as the Holy Face of Manoppello — absorbed the very first new breath of the Risen Christ . . . and at that same instant had imprinted on itself, miraculously, a vivid image of the now-resurrected Jesus. Modern scholars have confirmed that this image corresponds perfectly in all its measurements to the face of the dead Christ on the more famous Shroud of Turin. Unlike the Shroud, however, the Holy Face of Manoppello shows not the grim visage of a dead man with eyes closed, but the lively face of the living Christ, His eyes wide open, piercing us with their gaze. In 2006, Pope Benedict made a pilgrimage to Manoppello to pray before this image. In the decade since then, tens of thousands of other pilgrims have followed in the Pope’s footsteps, making the trek to central Italy to meet Jesus face-to-face. Now, thanks to author Paul Badde you can learn of the loss and recovery of this precious relic. Better yet, by means of the dozens of color pictures in this book, you, too, can encounter this miraculous cloth, and finally gaze reverently on the face of the living Christ Himself!

Book excerpt: Bertholet's 'A History of Hebrew Civilization ('Kulturgeschichte Israels') is what some scholars see as the culmination of nineteenth-century scholarship on Israelite religion. Working from general developmental theories of religion, Bertholet critically sketches Israel's development from nomadic life to their syncretism with existing Palestinian civilization.
