Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION. Word-play has long been recognized as one of Plautus' principal methods for arousing laughter, and every commentator has been at more or less pains to point out the passages in which this device is used. Just how much effect word-plays have in making Plautus what he is cannot be determined until the subject of Plautine humor is given a thorough investigation, and the various methods for arousing laughter are carefully analyzed and compared. It requires, however, only a casual reading of our author to learn that here, as in the case of Shakespeare, we have to do with a writer who does not use word-plays occasionally, but constantly, and relies to a great extent on this form of the comic. A recent editor of the Mostellaria exaggerates but slightly when he says that Plautus is ""copious in quip and pun until quip and pun grow wearisome.""...

Book Synopsis Multilingualism and Modernity by : Laura Lonsdale
Download or read book Multilingualism and Modernity written by Laura Lonsdale and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores multilingualism as an imaginative articulation of the experience of modernity in twentieth-century Spanish and American literature. It argues that while individual multilingual practices are highly singular, literary multilingualism exceeds the conventional bounds of modernism to become emblematic of the modern age. The book explores the confluence of multilingualism and modernity in the theme of barbarism, examining the significance of this theme to the relationship between language and modernity in the Spanish-speaking world, and the work of five authors in particular. These authors – Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ernest Hemingway, José María Arguedas, Jorge Semprún and Juan Goytisolo – explore the stylistic and conceptual potential of the interaction between languages, including Spanish, French, English, Galician, Quechua and Arabic, their work reflecting the eclecticism of literary multilingualism while revealing its significance as a mode of response to modernity.

Book excerpt: For anyone approaching Discourse Analysis for the first time, theory means little when it is not related to actual knowledge and experience of language in use. Describing Discourse takes the unique approach of introducing discourse studies through the hands-on analysis of linguistic data. The book introduces students to specific discourses constructed for particular purposes, for example, from the domains of advertising, law, medicine and education. Each chapter provides examples, exercises and commentary designed to develop the analytical abilities needed in describing the characteristic forms and typical functions of different discourses. Describing Discourse provides the ideal entry into the study of discourse for students new to the subject.

Book Synopsis Similes, Puns and Counterfactuals in Literary Narrative by : Jennifer Riddle Harding
Download or read book Similes, Puns and Counterfactuals in Literary Narrative written by Jennifer Riddle Harding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Jennifer Riddle Harding presents a cognitive analysis of three figures of speech that have readily identifiable forms: similes, puns, and counterfactuals. Harding argues that when deployed in literary narrative, these forms have narrative functions—such as the depiction of conscious experiences, allegorical meanings, and alternative plots—uniquely developed by these more visible figures of speech. Metaphors, by contrast, are often "invisible" in the formal structure of a text. With a solid cognitive grounding, Harding’s approach emphasizes the relationship between figurative forms and narrative effects. Harding demonstrates the literary functions of previously neglected figures of speech, and the potential for a unified approach to a topic that crosses cognitive disciplines. Her work has implications for the rhetorical approach to figures of speech, for cognitive disciplines, and for the studies of literature, rhetoric, and narrative.
