This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, 1876 In dealing with the medicines in the Appendix, it will be found that here and there hints are thrown out as to the action of medicines that may be thought out of place in a Pharmacopoeia. It must, however, be remembered that this is done with medicines about which but little is known, and the line of extra information, where given, may explain why the medicine is introduced. Another Object is gained thereby: medical men may be tempted to prove medicines if they see something to encourage them to do so. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Neither of these, however, is exactly adapted to meet the requirements of the practitioners in this country for various reasons. The former adopts the innovation of prescribing that the tinctures should contain in ten parts the soluble matter of one part of the dry plant. This rule if adopted, would necessitate a careful drying of all fresh plants in order to calculate their percentage of water. This, in our estima tion, would needlessly complicate the process, it looks well enough in theory but is tedious and difficult of practical exe cution. In other respects this is a work of great merit and bears evidence of very careful preparation and of high schol arship. In Dr. Schwabe's Polyglotts on the other hand the rules laid down by Hahncmann for the preparation of the remedies are closely followed, and remedies introduced after his time are brought under the same rules as far as practica ble; however, no descriptions of plants are given, or of the chemical processes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia: Compiled by Order of the German Central Union of Homoeopathic Physicians and Edited for the Use of Pharmaceutists The author regarded it always as an error, a mistake of the right point of view, to allow himself decisions about the virtue of homeopathic medicinal doses. To decide this question is not at all the sphere of the apothecary's responsibility; might he wish the contrary? Or has he presumed it to be necessary or proper in respect to allopathic medicines? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharmacopeia of the American Institute of Hom opathy As long ago as 1868 a resolution was adopted in the American Institute of Hom opathy, upon the motion of Dr. C. J. Hempel, for the appointment of a committee to prepare a Dispensatory which should embrace Pharmacy; and such a committee was appointed, with Dr. Carroll Dunham as chairman. Reports of progress appear in the Institute Transactions from year to year down to 1874, when Dr. Dunham said, "The committee has reason to believe that this is the last time they will have to report 'progress, ' and that the work may be ready for circulation before the next session of the Institute." But owing to the long-continued illness of a leading member of the committee, the work was not made ready for the printer; and during the following two years, preparations for the World's Hom opathic Congress at Philadelphia and the death of Dr. Dunham, which occurred soon after this convention, prevented the publication. Efforts were made to secure for the Institute the manuscripts of the committee, after the death of Dr. Dunham, but they were without success. At the meeting of the American Institute of Hom opathy in 1886 Drs. J. P. Dake, C. Wesselhoeft, and A. C. Cowperthwaite were appointed a committee to consider the question of publishing a Pharmacopeia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Copeland's Cure written by Natalie Robins and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-07-22 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional (“standard,” “traditional”) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial–as well as one of the most popular–alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances–minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by “entering” the body’s “vital force.” Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution. In Copeland’s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach–Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be “real” doctors, and how “real” doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath. At the center of Copeland's Cure is Royal Samuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical “diploma mills”). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research–controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies.
