Ballantyne (24 April 1825 – 8 February 1894) was a Scottish juvenile fiction writer. Born Robert Michael Ballantyne in Edinburgh, he was part of a famous family of printers and publishers. At the age of 16 he went to Canada and was six years in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company. He returned to Scotland in 1847, and published his first book the following year, Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America. For some time he was employed by Messrs Constable, the publishers, but in 1856 he gave up business for the profession of literature, and began the series of adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Madagascar during the reign of Queen Ranavalona I, ‘The Fugitives’ is an adventure novel by prolific author R.M. Ballantyne which is steeped in history. An unlikely trio consisting of a sailor, a ships cook, and a medical student find themselves washed up on the island following an attack on their ship. They must seek help, but encounter new dangers round every corner in this unfamiliar, yet awe-inspiring country. R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children’s fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16 Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company, travelling all over the country to trade for fur. He returned to Scotland in 1847 following the death of his father, and it was then that he began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children’s adventure books over the course of his life. Stories such as ‘The Coral Island’ and ‘The Young Fur Traders’ were hugely popular, and many of them drew on his own experiences of travelling throughout Canada. A stickler for detail, Ballantyne continued to travel widely to research the backgrounds and settings for his exciting stories. His tales became an inspiration for authors of the future, including ‘Treasure Island’ novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne spent the latter period of his life living in London and Italy for the sake of his health. He died in Rome in 1894 at the age of 68.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fugitives, or the Tyrant Queen of Madagascar It is almost allowable, I think, to say that this is a true story, for fiction has only been introduced for the purpose of piecing together and making a symmetrical whole of a number of most interesting facts in regard to Madagascar and the terrible persecutions that took place there in the early part and middle of the present century. I have ventured to modify time and place somewhat, as well as to mix my characters and their deeds a little, in order to suit the conditions of my tale; but in doing so I have striven to avoid exaggeration and to produce a true picture of the state of affairs, at the period treated of, in what may be styled one of the most interesting and progressive islands of the world. Book excerpt: Fourteen years of peace is enough to drive any two dedicated warriors to distraction. But, when those warriors are the Prince and Princess of Avinon it is a fundamental waste of resources. Their first son, Holdan, is approaching seventeen years old and is already a fine swordsman and ready to join the exalted ranks of the Warriors of Avinon. What they do not know, what no one in Avinon knows, is that an enemy from their past has arisen again, better equipped and funded than ever before and he has a diabolical scheme to attack Avinon from no only the outside but the inside as well. Turning parent against child and friend against friend, he seeks to divide the great city to soften it for his final blow. Aron and Sefina maintain their loving bond and are fortunate to have close friends upon whom they can count when things turn nasty. When the monster attacks, where can they turn, who can they trust in the final and climactic volume of The Avinon Chronicles in which scores are settled and true friends arise? In the end, great sacrifices are required to save all they love, but will it work? This book will make you want to read the other four. 474 pages, mild language, and implied sexual situations. Fine for late teens.
