Book excerpt: 'The Truce of God' is a historical fiction novel written by George Henry Miles. Set in the Middle Ages, the story unfolds during a time of chaos and violence after the fall of the Roman Empire. The barbarian invasions threatened to bring about a new era of cruelty, with the sword as the only source of power. But, due to the regenerating influence of Christianity, a few warrior kings, such as Theodoric, Charlemagne, and Luitprand, emerged who used the sword for just and decent purposes, intending to bring some peace to the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Classic Christmas short story set in medieval times with a courageous young girl who affects the peace the world so badly needs. This book was written during the era of Rinehart’s serious writing. It is a medieval Christmas fairy tale about Lord Charles the Fair and his young daughter, Clotilde, who longs for something more than her gender allows at that period in time. This is not such an unusual wish as between the 5th C. and the 15th C. there are no less than 105 women recorded as taking up arms to fight alongside their male counterparts. However this was not as easily achieved as one might think, if only because of the differences in a women’s upper-body shape to men which made the shaping of armour more difficult, not to mention more cumbersome in battle. =============== Mary Roberts Rinehart (August 12, 1876-September 22, 1958) was a prolific author often called the American Agatha Christie. She is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it", although she did not actually use the phrase herself, and also considered to have invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing. Rinehart wrote hundreds of short stories, poems, travelogues and special articles. Many of her books and plays were adapted for movies, such as The Bat (1926), The Bat Whispers (1930), and The Bat (1959). While many of her books were best-sellers, critics were most appreciative of her murder mysteries.

An innovative response to this violence was the Church-led initiative known as the Peace of God, perhaps history's earliest mass peace movement. In the thirteen essays collected here, leading scholars consider key aspects of the movement and episodes in its history.

Book excerpt: "The Truce of God" by our American novelist and dramatist, George Henry Miles, is not only a romantic and interesting story, it recalls one of the most striking achievements of the Middle Ages. The Church, in order to fight the military and armed excesses of feudalism, employed many means. It is to her that we owe what is known as the "Truce of God," or the enforced temporary suspension of hostilities usually, from the sunset of each Wednesday to Monday morning. Under pain of excommunication, during that interval, which at several times was further extended so as to comprise the seasons of Advent and Lent, and some of the major feasts, the sword might not be drawn in private quarrel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomaz Mastnak's provocative analysis of the roots of peacemaking in the Western world elucidates struggles for peace that took place in the high and late Middle Ages. Mastnak traces the ways that eleventh-century peace movements, seeking to end violence among Christians, shaped not only power structures within Christendom but also the relationship of the Western Christian world to the world outside. The unification of Christian society under the banner of "holy peace" precipitated a fundamental division between the Christian and non-Christian worlds, and the postulated peace among Christians led to holy war against non-Christians.

Book excerpt: Nobody would deny that the search for peace is one of humankind's most urgent tasks. Violence seems to have taken centre stage in public life with new acts of brutality and injustice being reported daily. Even in our leisure pursuits, violent fantasy has swamped vast tracts of popular cinema, fiction and computer games. This important book explores the potential of the Christian faith to help find ways to a more peaceful, less threatened world and urges Christians to respond to the call of Christ to become peacemakers. Fresh and contemporary in its language and illustrations, it explores the religious dimensions of our inner fears that shape external behaviour, examines the connections between peace, desire and simplicity, and unpacks words such as reconciliation that we sometimes use too easily. The Truce of God is a timely and responsive call to a practical Christian spirituality that is unafraid to engage with the realities of making peace in today's fragmented and frightened world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God is love is the radical claim of Christianity,” writes Frederick Bauerschmidt at the beginning of this little meditation on the essentials of Christian faith. In a rich yet accessible style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton, Bauerschmidt breathes life back into that claim, drawing from Scripture, great Christian and non-Christian writers of the past, and his own lived experience to show just how countercultural and subversive Christianity is actually meant to be. Eschewing the abstract and dogmatic in favor of the relational and inviting, he offers something for everyone, from lifelong churchgoers and students of religion to the growing population of “nones” among younger generations who are increasingly seeking spiritual fulfillment outside of institutional Christianity. With further reading suggestions (both scriptural and nonscriptural) at the end of each chapter, The Love That Is God is the perfect starting point of a spiritual journey into deeper relationship with God.
