Download or read book The Law of Labour and Employment Disputes in Trinidad and Tobago written by Addison Khan and published by . This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trinidad and Tobago has a very advanced system for the settlement of unresolved labour and employment disputes between employers and trade unions on behalf of workers by judicial process instead of by strike and lockout. The system has generated both condemnation and praise, but it remains nevertheless an acceptable workable method for the peaceful resolution of such disputes. The Law of Labour and Employment Disputes in Trinidad and Tobago provides an important assessment of this unique system and gives useful guidance on the operation of the Industrial Relations Act, Chap. 88:01 and the practice and procedures of the Industrial Court, a superior court of record, which is responsible for the adjudication of such disputes. The book gives an insight into the unsatisfactory industrial relations climate that existed prior to the implementation of the new system and discusses the multifarious provisions of the Industrial Relations Act, Chap. 88:01 and judgments of the Industrial Court on a variety of cases determined by it from 1965-2005. It contains chapters on the historical background to the introduction of legislation for the compulsory determination of unresolved labour and employment disputes, the beneficial effects of the legislation, the original defect in the Act concerning the power of the Industrial Court to make orders of reinstatement, the constitution, jurisdiction and powers of the Industrial Court, the provisions for recognition of trade unions as bargaining agents, collective bargaining and the binding nature of registered collective agreements, the constitution and jurisdiction of the Registration, Recognition and Certification Board, trade dispute procedures, disciplinaryaction, industrial action, offences and penalties, summary of relevant decisions of the Court of Appeal and a general appraisal of the system. The author, Addison Khan, M.A., L.L.M., Attorney at Law is the former President of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago, and has over 45 years' experience and expertise in industrial relations and industrial relations law. He was a former private legal practitioner and Assistant Legal Adviser of Texaco Trinidad, Inc. He has appeared as an advocate in labour and employment cases in the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago and served as a judge of that Court for nearly twenty years. He is at present in private practice as an Attorney at Law, specialising in labour and employment law cases. Industrial Court judges, Legal practitioners, industrial relations consultants, trade unions, employers, workers and all others engaged in the complex and difficult tasks of settling industrial disputes will find this book of considerable assistance to them, since it is the only publication of its kind in existence.
Book Synopsis The Report: Trinidad & Tobago 2016 by : Oxford Business Group
Download or read book The Report: Trinidad & Tobago 2016 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2016-08-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its March 2016 Economic Bulletin, the Central Bank of T & T stated that after negative growth of 1% in 2014, T & T's economy contracted by a further 2.1% in 2015, as per provisional data. Meanwhile, government revenue fell by 6.2% in FY 2014/15, with a 35% decline in energy collections outstripping increases in non-energy and capital receipts. Nonetheless, the recessionary environment is not without opportunity for the country's new leadership. As the Government of Keith Rowley, which assumed office in September 2015, works to bring government spending under control, policies aimed at economic diversification could be set to gain further traction. Moreover, given that T & T has a safety buffer in the form of strong foreign currency reserves and a sovereign wealth fund, there is a relatively room to manoeuvre.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad by : Ray Kiely
Download or read book The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad written by Ray Kiely and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a labour history of Trinidad and Tobago, concentrating on the period from 1937 to 1990. The study attempts to show that there is not a unified or homogenous working class, and for this reason both traditional Marxist and industrial relations theories are rejected. Instead, the history of labour focuses on how the working classes have been divided by factors such as race, gender, class structure and politics. These divisions are used as an explanation for the absence of a popular socialist party in the country. It concludes that the economic recession of the 1980s has led to the worst crisis in the history of the labour movement, but at the same time, this has laid the framework for a new strategy of social movement unionism, which attempts to constructively engage with, rather than ignore, divisions within the working classes. The main sources of data were documentary and archival material, and in particular, reports made by the British TUC and Colonial Office, industrial relations legislation, and trade union and political party documents and manifestoes. For the contemporary period, these sources of data were supplemented by fifteen interviews with leading figures in trade union and labour politics. The work is based on a macro approach to the study of labour, and as such constitutes a new and original approach to the study of labour in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, more contemporary trade union documents and interviews provided the researcher with new and original material.
