Free use has therefore been made of the Reports Of the Medical Superintendents of the Metropolitan Asylums Board, and of the Report to the American Pediatric Society, which confirm in the most conclusive way my own Observations. Though statistics have been quoted from these Reports, which deal with large numbers, the detailed in the following pages are all selected from those which have been under my care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Larger Doses of Antitoxin in the Treatment of Diphtheria Of the cases of diphtheria treated in the five years that the South Department has been open, 772, or per cent., required operative interference. 'in about one hun dred instances there were marked-laryngeal symptoms, but operative interference was notrequired, the stenosis being relieved by antitoxm. The use of steam for the relief of the stenosis has been discarded, except in cases of trache otomy, because it was found that the relief was not sufficient to offset the debilitating effects of the steam on the patients. The sublimation of calomel was tried in many cases, but without satisfactory results, as the patients almost invariably required operation. To discuss the relative advantages of intubation as compared with tracheotomy, would prolong this paper to an unseemly length, but a death-rate'of 31 per cent. In intubation cases as compared with the death-rate reported in tracheotomy cases shows conclusively the advantage of intubation over tracheotomy. The necessary toxin-antitoxin mixture (as also the toxin required for the Schick test) is, in New York, distributed on a large scale from State and other recognised laboratories, the authorities of which guarantee the uniformity of the constituent elements and of the mixture. Corresponding supplies in this country have hitherto been obtainable from the Wellcome Laboratory, and no doubt bacteriologists at other laboratories who are experienced in this type of work can furnish the protective material prepared according to the generally accepted standards. No officially standardised supply is issued by our public authorities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Seven abscesses and 13 cases of exanthemata were on record as the probable after-effects of the serum, but nothing of serious nature or permanent effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Toxin of Diphtheria and Its Antitoxin In accordance with their facilities and command of meth ods, experimenters have been exploiting the nature and ao tion of toxins in different directions, some applying the methods of physiology and physiological chemistry, others those of pathological anatomy, still others those of ex perimental biology. Though we must acknowledge that we are only within the threshold of this work, it is difficult not to see what great progress has been made. Ten years ago a vague knowledge of the existence of bacterial poi sons is all that we possessed. Of the existence of anti toxins there was not a hint. Since then a new horizon has come into View fully as great in its sweep as that which pre sented itself to the great discoverers in the domain of micro organisms. For while the latter revealed to us the swarm of enemies that beset us, the former unfolds before us the forces that the animal body holds in readiness for them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Antitoxin, Diphtheria, the Practitioner, and History: A Practical View of Antitoxin and Diphtheria in Private Practice; Antitoxin, Diphtheria, and Statistics Although many able practitioners and scientists claim that antitoxin for diphtheria has ceased to be a question, and that all argument concerning the fact Of its utility is futile labor, other equally able Observers and equally well-equipped practitioners claim that it is a fact that the remedy is useless and at times harm ful. Whatever the inclinations and tastes of practitioners may be concerning the contentions of Opposing author ities, they have three sources Open to themselves from which to gather facts and Opinions for justifying their own ways of thinking and practice: 1, history; 2, laboratory reports; 3, clinical experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diphtheria: Its Causes, Prevention, and Proper Treatment In writing upon the treatment of diphtheria, the author has described the methods which he employs in his own practice, and which he has found successful in a large number of cases, some of which were of the worst form. These methods are not presented as original. They have been selected from those described in the numerous articles on the subject, written by those of the most extensive experience. The author is especially indebted to the very exhaustive treatise on the subject of diphtheria in Ziemssen's Cyclopaedia of Medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diphtheria: How to Recognize the Disease, How to Keep From Catching It, How to Treat Those Who Do Catch It After babyhood has passed, beware of diphtheria. Of all the deaths of children 3 and 4 years of age, more than one-seventh are caused by diphtheria. Diphtheria is preventable and, when properly treated with antitoxin, is curable. Most of the children who die from diphtheria really lose their lives because of the ignorance and carelessness of their parents. Diphtheria is a disease most often occurring in children and resembling a sore throat or tonsillitis. It is caused by a small germ called the diphtheria bacillus. The disease may resemble: A very mild sore throat, the tonsils and back of the mouth being redder than usual, and the person not feeling ill. It may look like a more severe sore throat or tonsillitis with a white or grayish patch, called a membrane, on the tonsils.
