Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preferential Trade Relations: Between Great Britain and Her Colonies; An Address Delivered Before the Montreal Board of Trade, January 20th, 1896 I may say that since I met Mr. Cantlie I have received a letter from the central'committee, the organizing committee of the great Congress of Chambers of Commerce of the Empire, in which they have done me the honor to invite me to become one of the Vice Presidents. The Rt. Hon. J oseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has accepted the position of Honorary President of that Congress, and I was gratified - as I am sure you will be - to find that the first ques tion that is to receive the attention of that great body is commerc1al relations betw een the mother country and her colonies and dependencies. (loud applause. I feel quite sure that you will agree with me in attaching great importance to Canada having as large and as able representation as possible from all the Chambers of Commerce and all the Boarus of Trade throughout this wide Dominion. I may say, in passing, that it is not necessary absolutely to send a delegate, because any Board of Trade, or any Chamber of Commerce, will be entitled to name, as its dele gate, if it is not convenient for it to send one from Canada, a gentleman who would have its confidence, and who resides on the other side of the water. I may say that I believe that the present moment is one singularly favorable for the consideration of this great question of preferential trade between the United Kingdom and her various colonies and dependencies, spread all over the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic Geography of the British Empire The importance of the economic aspect of geo graphical science, demanding not only a record of the various features and phenomena of the earth's surface, but also an understanding of their relation to one another and more especially of their control of human life and activity, is now fully recognised, and this book attempts to work out on these lines the geography of those parts of the world occupied or controlled by the British people. For this purpose the British Empire affords a field of study almost as Wide as the world itself, for it presents physical features, climates, plants, animals and peoples of every type. The widely different modes of life and even the mental outlook of the Canadian farmer, the Australian squatter, the South African miner, the Indian ryot, the South Sea islander and the town-dweller of the mother country are Very largely the result of their geographical environment; and the causes and pos sible solutions of many Imperial problems cannot be clearly understood Without a knowledge 'of the geographical conditions underlying them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commerce and the Empire After working many years for Free Trade in Australia I feel emboldened to make an effort in the wider field of the Empire. The time has arrived when, in my judgment, Free Traders in all the self-governing Colonies should make an effort to bring their respective parts of the Empire into line with British fiscal policy. The task is by no means so difficult as some people think; race sympathy is making it easier every year; and the very need of revenue makes the task less instead of more difficult, since it is easier to obtain revenue without than it is with restriction. The necessity of dealing with the preferential phase of the subject has caused me to hurry the publishing, and consequently the book is less complete in many respects than I intended. The controversy with regard to preferential duties will have one good result: it will lead to a better general knowledge of the whole subject, and will, therefore, pave the way for the Self-Governing Colonies, one after another, to raise the Free Trade flag. A British Free Trade Empire is a noble object for which to fight. During a period of about nine months, in 1900-1901, immediately preceding the first Federal Election in the Australian Commonwealth, I published a weekly paper, under the title of Our Country, dealing solely with the fiscal controversy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Relations With the Chinese Empire in 1832: Comparative Statement of the English and American Trade With India and Canton Before the Burmese war the finances of the East India Company were in a prosperous state; but when the threatenings of the wily Burmah had begun to alarm the numerous native population of Calcutta, who sought to remove their wealth within the protection Of the guns of Fort William, the Bengal government, with a promptitude deserving of more credit than it has obtained, diverted a hostile attack from the capital of India by the invasion of Rangoon. During a protracted war, the government spent a great deal of money, which found its way into the pockets of the merchants, ship-owners, and traders Of Calcutta, many of whom made large fortunes in an incredibly short space of time. The contest being at last brought to a conclusion with safety to our Indian territories and honour to the British name, it was natural to seek some mode of reimbursement for the outlay of which had been required, and accord ingly a moderate stamp act, legalised by Parliament, was had recourse to within the limits of the city of Calcutta, the English merchants in which were the principal benefitters by the war. Instantly an alarm was raised - like lands men after a storm, When the danger was over and all things righted, The war was forgotten, and the Company slighted.
