The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Newton, after solving the two-body problem so brilliantly, tried his hand at the Sun-Earth-Moon system. Here he failed in two respects: neither was he able to compute the motion of the moon accurately, nor did he understand the reason for that. It took a long time to understand the fundamental importance of Newton's failure, and only Poincare realised what was the fundamental difficulty in Newtons programme. Nowadays, the term deterministic chaos is associated with this problem. The deep insights of Poincare were neglected by the founding fathers of Quantum Physics. Thus history was repeated by Bohr and his students. After quantising the hydrogen atom, they soon found that the textbook case of a three-body problem in atomic physics, the 3He-atom, did not yield to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation methods. Only these days do people realise what precisely were the difficulties connected to this semi classical way of treating quantum systems. Our field, as we know it today, began in principle in the early 1950's, when Watson sketched the outlines of three-body scattering theory. Mathematical rigour was achieved by Faddeev and thereafter, at the beginning of the 1960's, the quantum three-body prob lem, at least as far as short-range forces were concerned, w&s tamed. In the years that followed, through the work of others, who first applied Faddeev's methods, but later added new techniques, the three-and four-body problems became fully housebroken.

The historical roots of these discussions are traced to the beginning of modern psychology. In the beginning of experimental psychology in Leibzig, Wundt worked on how elements of sensation relate to consciousness. In later development of psychology, the timing of conscious and unconscious processing of information, the timing of events in learning including language learning, mental speed and intelligence, and the speed of cognition vis-à-vis emotion are all crucial questions. Systematic consideration of neural times is complementary to conventional neuroscience research, such as the Blue Brain Project focusing on neural structure. The discussion of neural times in the literature tends to be fragmented, incidental to whatever is the subject matter. This book attempts to treat neural times in the whole range of basic psychological processes more systematically, and shows how they are germane to the understanding of many cognitive and behavioral phenomena. Neural times are related to the evolutionary development of the brain and the human experience. A crucial dynamic in the interaction of evolutionarily older and newer regions of the brain depends on timing. The interaction of the generally faster unconscious processes, including emotions, and more deliberate processes results in greater variation of experiences and behaviors which is central to free will and adaptive for humankind as a whole. This monograph is intended for senior undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals interested in an in-depth look at the role of timing of neural and behavioral processes in affecting human experience. It is not a textbook as such. It is a complementary resource for students of cognitive psychology, learning, and evolutionary psychology.

Book excerpt: This book reports on the development of a pioneering light source architecture of the so-called Petawatt Field Synthesizer (PFS) system, which is based on short-pulse pumped, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), driven by a homemade, 1-ps diode-pumped Yb:YAG. At a few-cycle pulse duration of the amplified pulses, this architecture yields record levels of peak power and temporal contrast, the latter boasting a 100-times faster rise time from the noise level to peak intensity of the pulse compared to conventional laser systems. This allows investigation of the true laser–solid interaction without premature plasma expansion and without lossy pulse cleaning by e.g. plasma mirrors. The book describes several concepts for the generation of broadband, high-energy and high-contrast seed pulses, as well as the OPCPA development, few-cycle pulse compression and contrast characterization in a concise and insightful manner. The theory chapter serves as an excellent and accessible primer on OPCPA and other nonlinear interactions, while the experimental parts provide an excellent description of the challenges of developing such a novel architecture and some of the innovative solutions to overcome them.

Only a Few does open the eyes of the deceived, the sleeping, and the ones who cannot see the truth in the Word of God. The Word of God has been twisted and manipulated by man, for their own motives, for the past two-thousand years. However, now that the end-times are creeping up on us, light must be shed on the twisted lies and deceptions that Satan has created. Truth, understanding, and righteousness are the ways of God. Ignorance to the truth only shows that one has not put forth the effort required; the effort God is looking for; the effort which shows that one has truly put The Almighty first in his or her life. The Bible speaks of, both, the righteousness of God and the sins of man. Regrettably, many, over the centuries, have aligned themselves with what was sinfully corrupted by man, making it their doctrine, and therefore, forsaking the righteousness of God. These twisted doctrines have grown to appear righteous to believers, but they are not righteous in the eyes of God. Half-truths are merely lies and the God of the Bible cannot accept lies, even if they are done in His name. Our walk with God is a walk toward righteousness. The job of the Holy Spirit is to show us truth, and all believers must decide to walk in truth (love the truth), or live with the lies. In other words, many have been living a "lukewarm" life for God. In Only a Few, Tadzik Zdan explains that God is a loving God, but, His love is contained within His righteousness. God loves all whom He created, but if they do not abide by His righteousness; His laws; and His teachings, He has no choice but to condemn the unrighteous ones (even if they have been deceived into thinking they are righteous to Him). It exposes the sinful path of Gods believers throughout the centuries, as foretold within the prophecies contained in the Bible. The keys to the New Testament are contained within its parables. They show the plight of the believers and non-believers alike and are the keys to eternal life. Only a Few systematically explains the deceptions that have been implemented over the centuries, and what God is looking for in His righteous ones. The true -and most biblically sound- interpretations of the parables are exposed; all to the righteous glory of God. Everyone who has read the Bible, or even simply owns a bible, needs the enlightenment of this book so that they may stand righteous to the Creator and shed the lies of the past (the eyes of the blind will see). Only a Few celebrates the righteousness and greatness of the Almighty, and it is a must read for the times we live in. So, if God is truly important in your life, this book will be the oil for your lantern. For such a time as this, Only a Few should accompany every Bible. May Gods righteousness be bestowed upon you.
