Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 15: Number 3 Teachers may be interested in methods Of finding solu tions Of these equations in which all quantities are integers. In this paper theorems are stated, and in two cases proved, by which solutions Of these equations can be found, and tables showing several solutions for each equation are given. The proofs involve only algebra and some results Of the elementary theory of numbers which are so simple that, I believe, a thoughtful person can provide demonstra tions Of them for himself in case they are not Obvious. Hence no extensive mathematical knowledge is necessary for the understanding Of this discussion. After the consideration Of the three equations that have been mentioned, a method is indicated for proving that it is impossible to construct a regular pyramid on a square base with all edges rational and with both volume and lat eral area rational. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 2: No. 1, October 15, 1916 In the last bulletin some notion was given in regard to the manner in which students may use formulas and statements al ready given in letters. It was seen that all rules of Arithmetic may be given in the short-hand statements with letters. It is now our purpose to suggest a method of proceeding so that pupils may learn to use this new language or mode of expres sion and hence think in letters instead of numbers. To gain such a power on the part of the pupil some little time and train ing will be necessary. It. Must come through practice and drill by the teacher. Nothing will be so valuable here to the pupil as a, skillful teacher in regular outlined lessons extending over a period of time sufficient to enable the pupile to gain this power of thought expression. One or two recitations per week during the last year before Algebra proper is begun is suggested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 3: February 20, 1918 In the summer of 1916, during the first four days of the University Summer School, there was held at the University of Texas a Mathematics Tea'chers' Conference. It was rather well advertised in this bulletin and in the literature sent out by the University concerning the session. About thirty teachers came for the conference. They were earnest and enthusiastic and there was a. Feeling that some good had been done. As the writer recalls the matter at this time, each teacher who attended undertook to come again the following year and bring with him two others. Having this encouragement, a second conference for teachers of mathematics Was planned for the same time in 1917. There had been some correspondence on the subject with teachers who had been at the first one, and it was the hope of those who had launched the movement that the next meeting would be both more numerously attended and more profitable to those attend ing than had been the first one. One of the hopes, at least, was not realized. The attendance instead of being larger than in 1916 was somewhat smaller; as to the comparative profitableness of the two occasions, the writer has no sure basis for a very positive opinion. We find ourselves, therefore, in somewhat of a quandary as to whether to attempt a conference this summer. The days for. The meeting would be June 12 to 15. Those of us who are at the University, especially those of us who started this move ment, are loth to see the meetings discontinued, but have no mind to carry them on unless they can reach a reasonable num ber of teachers of mathematics in Texas Schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, 1912, Vol. 21 As the drill will not penetrate the granite unless kept to the work hour after hour, so the mind will not penetrate the secrets Of mathematics unless held long and vigorously to the work. As the sun's rays burn only when coneen trated, so the mind achieves mastery in mathematics, and indeed in every branch Of knowledge, only when its pos sessor hurls all his forces upon it. Mathematics, like all the other sciences, opens its doors to those only who knock long and hard. NO more damaging evidence can be ad duced to prove the weakness Of character than for one to have aversion to mathematics; for whether one Wishes SO or not, it is nevertheless true; that to have aversion for mathematics means to have aversion to accurate, pains taking, and persistent hard study, and to have aversion to hard study is to fail to secure a liberal education, and thus fail to compete in that fierce and vigorous struggle for the highest and the truest and the best in life which only the strong can hope to secure. - B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers Bulletin, 1924, Vol. 11 Another regular subdivision of the right angle and one concerning which mathematical books are singularly silent is that which goes by the ambiguous title, the point. The circumference is divided into thirty-two equal divisions, the angle of one-eighth of a right angle being then called the point. This is one of the easiest methods of obtaining an angle, when once a pair of mutually perpendicular diameters have been drawn, only bisection being employed. Fractions of a point when required, are measured in the same spirit, in halves, quarters, eighths, and so forth. The reason that this subdivision is so seldom mentioned is probably because it is so extensively identified with the compass and is so seldom used for accurate measurement. The notation used with a compass is self-consistent but hardly simple to an average layman who would usually be hard put to it to box the compass in approved nautical fashion. Another method of subdividing the point, and one well adapted to careful work leads to the French mil, which will be men tioned shortly. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Drawing upon new research in psychology, education, and cognitive science, the authors have demystified a complex topic into clear explanations of seven powerful learning principles. Full of great ideas and practical suggestions, all based on solid research evidence, this book is essential reading for instructors at all levels who wish to improve their students' learning." —Barbara Gross Davis, assistant vice chancellor for educational development, University of California, Berkeley, and author, Tools for Teaching "This book is a must-read for every instructor, new or experienced. Although I have been teaching for almost thirty years, as I read this book I found myself resonating with many of its ideas, and I discovered new ways of thinking about teaching." —Eugenia T. Paulus, professor of chemistry, North Hennepin Community College, and 2008 U.S. Community Colleges Professor of the Year from The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education "Thank you Carnegie Mellon for making accessible what has previously been inaccessible to those of us who are not learning scientists. Your focus on the essence of learning combined with concrete examples of the daily challenges of teaching and clear tactical strategies for faculty to consider is a welcome work. I will recommend this book to all my colleagues." —Catherine M. Casserly, senior partner, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching "As you read about each of the seven basic learning principles in this book, you will find advice that is grounded in learning theory, based on research evidence, relevant to college teaching, and easy to understand. The authors have extensive knowledge and experience in applying the science of learning to college teaching, and they graciously share it with you in this organized and readable book." —From the Foreword by Richard E. Mayer, professor of psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara; coauthor, e-Learning and the Science of Instruction; and author, Multimedia Learning
