Book excerpt: Carbohydrates are widely distributed in nature and widely available, and so are considered as a promising feedstock for the preparation of many organic chemical compounds. They are particularly useful in the preparation of nitrogen heterocycles because of their related structural characteristics and easy availability. Synthesis of Naturally Occurring Nitrogen Heterocycles from Carbohydrates will review the recent literature dealing with use of carbohydrates as raw materials in the synthesis of these materials. The text contains six chapters arranged according to the complexity of the heterocyclic compounds discussed, ranging from five to seven membered rings and from single to multiple fused rings. The book provides a detailed discussion of the various synthetic approaches to these compounds, using carbohydrate starting materials, and does not merely reference synthetic methodology but attempts to give as much detail as possible on the actual experimental conditions used, in such a way that the chemist can use the information directly to design a multi-step synthesis. It discusses the different approaches to the synthesis of a wide range of naturally occurring nitrogen heterocycles in a format that enables the reader to make comparisons and decisions on whether to use a certain procedure, to modify it, or to devise a new synthetic methodology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary overview of bio-derived solvent applications, life cycle analysis, and strategies required for industrial commercialization This book provides the first and only comprehensive review of the state-of-the-science in bio-derived solvents. Drawing on their own pioneering work in the field, as well as an exhaustive survey of the world literature on the subject, the authors cover all the bases—from bio-derived solvent applications to life cycle analysis to strategies for industrial commercialization—for researchers and professional chemists working across a range of industries. In the increasingly critical area of sustainable chemistry, the search for new and better green solvents has become a top priority. Thanks to their renewability, biodegradability and low toxicity, as well as their potential to promote advantageous organic reactions, green solvents offer the promise of significantly reducing the pernicious effects of chemical processes on human health and the environment. Following an overview of the current solvents markets and the challenges and opportunities presented by bio-derived solvents, a series of dedicated chapters cover all significant classes of solvent arranged by origin and/or chemical structure. Throughout, real-world examples are used to help demonstrate the various advantages, drawbacks, and limitations of each class of solvent. Topics covered include: The commercial potential of various renewably sourced solvents, such as glycerol The various advantages and disadvantages of bio-derived versus petroleum-based solvents Renewably-sourced and waste-derived solvents in the design of eco-efficient processes Life cycle assessment and predictive methods for bio-based solvents Industrial and commercial viability of bio-based solvents now and in the years ahead Potential and limitations of methodologies involving bio-derived solvents New developments and emerging trends in the field and the shape of things to come Considering the vast potential for new and better products suggested by recent developments in this exciting field, Bio-Based Solvents will be a welcome resource among students and researchers in catalysis, organic synthesis, electrochemistry, and pharmaceuticals, as well as industrial chemists involved in manufacturing processes and formulation, and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the book is devoted to a study of a series of organic reactions from readily available and less costly starting materials such as coumarins, pyrazoles, and chromones. These heterocyclic compounds were readily converted to polyketomethylene compounds by treatment with active methylene compounds such as triacetic acid lactone, dimedone, 3-methyl-1-phenyl-5-pyrazolone and nitrogenous bases such as hydrazine hydrate, phenyl-hydrazine, hydroxylamine respectively under different reaction conditions and the structures of all new compounds were identified on the basis of IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy. Some of these synthesized compounds have been investigated for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and antibacterial activities. Most of the compounds have been found to possess significant activities and their effect was compared with the standard drugs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The O- and N- heterocycles are widely found in natural products as well as in pharmaceuticals and other fine chemicals, and many heterocycles have additional interest from their structural, mechanistic or biological points of view. Driven by this ubiquitous occurrence of the O- and N- heterocycles, their economic importance and academic significance, the already rich and imaginative chemistry of these compounds is still growing at a steady pace. In this three-volume publication, more than thirty groups of expert chemists from different latitudes covering four continents and twenty countries and nationalities, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, and United States, provide exhaustive, well documented and up-to-date reviews on their fields of research. These contributions cover different aspects of the modern chemistry of O- and N- heterocycles, reflecting its state of the art in various specific areas of research; in addition, personal accounts are also provided by many scientists, reporting the most relevant contributions in specific areas and recent advances of their own research. Many of the most important heterocycles are included in the publication. The exhaustively referenced reviews have been arranged trying to follow a set of arbitrary criteria, which included the heteroatom(s) involved, the size of the rings, the number of rings and the structural complexity of the products; the use of specific starting materials, reagents or techniques and the access to specific products has also guided the classification process. Analogous criteria have been employed in order to arrange the chapters within each volume. In general, chapters have been systematically arranged in order of increasing ring size and structural complexity of the different target molecules, from the small sized aziridines up to macroheterocycles and heterocyclic-based dendrimers. Additional space was reserved for new methodologies for the synthesis of O- and N-heterocycles, such as solid-supported and microwave-assisted organic synthesis and flash vacuum pyrolysis and the use of specific transformations in the synthesis of O- and N-heterocycles, such as ring closing metathesis, 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions and the Paulson-Khand reaction. The Editors gratefully acknowledge the extra time, effort and kind cooperation of all of the contributing authors and their co-workers, which have greatly helped putting forward this publication, and hope this book will constitute not only a convenient means for updating specific areas of the synthetic chemistry of O- and N-heterocycles, but also an important reference for ongoing research and a useful starting point for new and original projects and chemical developments.
