Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tradition recognises five social sciences: anthropology, economies, social psychology, sociology, and political science. But who knows what is going on in all five disciplines? Social scientists from one discipline often know little or nothing about the progress made by social scientists from another discipline working on essentially the same social problem. Sometimes, even of a neighbouring discipline is terra incognita. the methodology The problem becomes worse when we widen the remit to natural scientists and engineers. I have found little evidence myself that they see themselves as standing on the other side of an unbridgeable golf between two cultures. They observe the intellectual excesses of those few 'newage' social scientists who see themselves fighting a 'science war', but the ignorance of these innumerate critics is so apparent in their grossly naive attacks on natural science, that they are not taken seriously. However, although natural scientists appreciate that most social science is genuine science, they seldom know much about how and why it is done as it iso This can lead to serious inefficiencies in areas in which the traditional frontiers between social and natural science are melting away. An example is the frontier between the economies of imperfeet competition and evolutionary biology. Reversing the usual bias, the evolutionary biologists commonly know little mathematics, and hence find the game theory literature hard to read, with the result that they often spend their time re-inventing the wheel.

Book excerpt: There is today widespread recognition of the fact that the future of human civilization depends to a high degree upon Man s capacity to understand the forces and factors which control his own behaviour. Such understanding must be achieved, not only as regards individual conduct, but equally as regards the mass phenomena resulting from group contacts, which are becoming increasingly intimate and influential. Until this present volume, nowhere have the three sciences of sociology, psychology and social anthropology been properly mobilized to deal with the social problems which yearly grow more pressing. The essays in this book aim to address this."

Book excerpt: First published in 1957. This is Volume VIII of Mannheim's collected works. When Karl Mannheim was proscribed by Hitler in 1933, like others on that first list he was at once offered academic posts in universities in different parts of the world. He came to London, and the book which follows is based on two of the courses of lectures that he gave in London: the first was given at the London School of Economics under the title Systematic Sociology, and the second elsewhere under the title Social Structure. The first three parts of this book are based on the manuscript of Mannheim's lectures on systematic sociology, first delivered during the academic session 1934–35 and, in slightly modified form, during the following sessions. Part Four of this book is based on some of the lectures in a course on social structure delivered during the war years.

Readers will see how seemingly diverse disciplines intermingle and connect to one another – anthropology and economics, for example. The goal of the book is to teach students critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will allow them to approach social issues in an objective and informed way. New to this edition are significant updates on: The election of Donald Trump and the emergence of related populist movements Trade policy and health care Issues involving migration and immigration Emerging developments in artificial intelligence Comparisons between cultural and biological evolution Examples, data, recommended readings, and internet questions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Credential Society is a classic on the role of higher education in American society and an essential text for understanding the reproduction of inequality. Controversial at the time, Randall Collins’s claim that the expansion of American education has not increased social mobility, but rather created a cycle of credential inflation, has proven remarkably prescient. Collins shows how credential inflation stymies mass education’s promises of upward mobility. An unacknowledged spiral of the rising production of credentials and job requirements was brought about by the expansion of high school and then undergraduate education, with consequences including grade inflation, rising educational costs, and misleading job promises dangled by for-profit schools. Collins examines medicine, law, and engineering to show the ways in which credentialing closed these high-status professions to new arrivals. In an era marked by the devaluation of high school diplomas, outcry about the value of expensive undergraduate degrees, and the proliferation of new professional degrees like the MBA, The Credential Society has more than stood the test of time. In a new preface, Collins discusses recent developments, debunks claims that credentialization is driven by technological change, and points to alternative pathways for the future of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific study of society is known as sociology. All spheres of human activity are continuously influenced by a complex interplay of individual agency and social structure. The study of society expands to the domains of health, economy, education, military and science. However, at its core, the field is focused on the study of culture, criminality and punishment, economy, family, gender and sexuality, health and illness, peace, war and conflict, etc. Sociological study and research is vital for educators, policy makers, legislators, non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations, social workers and anyone with the inclination to resolve or address social issues. The central problems of sociological theory are concerned with the way to transcend, link or cope with the dichotomies of structure and agency, subjectivity and objectivity, and synchrony and diachrony. Modern sociological studies are advanced by the adoption of hermeneutic, philosophic and interpretive techniques as well as analytic, computational and mathematical approaches to the study of society and culture. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the field of sociology. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies and advanced studies have been included in this book. With state-of-the-art inputs by acclaimed experts of this field, this book targets students and professionals.
