They are the first objects we see in the night sky, dominate the light produced in our own and other galaxies and nucleosynthesis in stars produces all the elements heavier than helium. A knowledge of stars and their evolution is vital in understanding other astrophysical objects from accreting black holes and galaxies to the Universe itself. The structure of a star can be described mathematically by differential equations which can be derived from the principles of hydrodynamics, electromagnetic theory, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and atomic and nuclear physics. The basic equations of a spherical star are derived in detail, the modes of energy transport, the equation of state, the physics of the opacity sources and the nuclear reactions are explained. Approximate solutions of the equations for stellar structure are given. Attention is given to the virial theorem, polytropic gas spheres and homology principles. The procedure for numerical solution of the equations is outlined. The evolution of a star is described from its main sequence evolution through the exhaustion of various nuclear fuels to the end points of evolution such as white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes. Supernova explosions as the deaths of massive stars along with the nucleosynthesis of elements within stars are explained.

In it, Martin Schwarzschild described numerical experiments that successfully reproduced most of the observed properties of the majority of stars seen in the sky. He also set the standard for a lucid description of the physics of stellar interiors. Ten years later, in 1968, John P. Cox's tw~volume monograph Principles of Stellar Structure appeared, as did the more specialized text Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nuc1eosynthesis by Donald D. Clayton-and what a difference ten years had made. The field had matured into the basic form that it remains today. The past twenty-plus years have seen this branch of astrophysics flourish and develop into a fundamental pillar of modern astrophysics that addresses an enormous variety of phenomena. In view of this it might seem foolish to offer another text of finite length and expect it to cover any more than a fraction of what should be discussed to make it a thorough and self-contained reference. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most common question that a child asks when he or she sees the night sky from a dark site for the first time is: 'How many stars are there?' This happens to be a question which has exercised the intellectual skills of many astronomers over the course of most of the last century, including, for the last two decades, one of the authors of this text. Until recently, the most accurate answer was 'We are not certain, but there is a good chance that almost all of them are M dwarfs. ' Within the last three years, results from new sky-surveys - particularly the first deep surveys at near infrared wavelengths - have provided a breakthrough in this subject, solidifying our census of the lowest-mass stars and identifying large numbers of the hitherto almost mythical substellar-mass brown dwarfs. These extremely low-luminosity objects are the central subjects of this book, and the subtitle should be interpreted accordingly. The expression 'low-mass stars' carries a wide range of meanings in the astronomical literature, but is most frequently taken to refer to objects with masses comparable with that of the Sun - F and G dwarfs, and their red giant descendants. While this definition is eminently reasonable for the average extragalactic astronomer, our discussion centres on M dwarfs, with masses of no more than 60% that of the Sun, and extends to 'failed stars' - objects with insufficient mass to ignite central hydrogen fusion.
