Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Hidden Patients” looks at questions of gender in psychiatric publications on the colonial Maghreb, which described “normal” and “abnormal” forms of behaviour among the colonised and compared these findings to descriptions of Europeans who had been diagnosed with psychiatric “abnormalities”. Many psychiatric experts claimed that Muslim women rarely went “mad” and that they only accounted for a negligible percentage of the patients cared for by colonial psychiatrists. Consequently, relatively little space was dedicated to female Muslim patients in the theoretical source material, even though case studies and statistics clearly showed that it was mainly an imaginary absence and that it contradicted the everyday experiences of the psychiatrists.

Book excerpt: A timeless summary of everything scientific research has proven you ever need to know to live your best life, The Serious Pursuit of Happiness is written as a potentially life-changing combination of 10% textbook, 80% happiness roadmap, and 10% action planner. Just 3 hours of reading time is all you need to invest to learn what you need to know to live the happiest and most fulfilling life possible! Here's why: Most people, when asked if they would like to be happy, reply along these lines: "Sure. Just tell me what to do!" And that's exactly what this book does. Rich in prescribed actions and rooted in comprehensive research - Miller's book is unparalleled in its ability to help the reader learn exactly what to do - and what not to do - to flourish and thrive - beginning now. Deliberately designed to be a prescriptive, one-stop happiness shop, this classic and timeless "how to" book is the ultimate self-help guide to well being - containing over 400 specific, practical, powerful, and proven strategies and actions that individuals can begin to easily implement on their own - immediately - to live happier, more rewarding, and more meaningful lives. The promise of Miller's book is that readers around the world can read one small, companion-sized book and learn literally everything that has been proven about specifically how people should think, how they should act, what kind of person they should be, and what exactly they should actually do to flourish and thrive to live as "happily ever after" as is possible. Intended to be both a "quick read" as well as a lifetime companion guidebook, this one compact-sized book is packed with the results from Miller's over 10 years of "researching the research." This in-depth process included a summarization of over 40 years of happiness research including hundreds of studies by leading psychologists the world over, the findings of the revolutionary and still-emerging new science of Positive Psychology, recent advances by biologists and neurologists, and the ancient wisdom of revered philosophers - all deftly synthesized down into six powerful and proven imperatives. Simply organized into a three phase "journey" to a happier life that is easy to understand and follow - The Serious Pursuit of Happiness is a 'must-read' for individuals IF they are serious about learning exactly what to do to invite and then keep happiness in their life. It not only lights the paths to follow by spelling out in detail the proven actions to add to their day-to-day life to flourish - it also highlights the myths and faulty thinking that are barriers to achieving lasting meaning, fulfillment, and joy - and need to be avoided. For companies and other organizations with enlightened leaders, Miller's book offers an opportunity to "do well by doing good" for their employees by giving them the gift of a potential lifetime of happiness - while also helping to enable them to perform at a higher level. Research has shown the following to be true: * Psychologically well employees consistently exhibit higher levels of engagement, performance, productivity, loyalty, and commitment. * Between 10% and 25% of job performance variance is correlated with overall well being. * Employees who are unhappy in life are unlikely to find job satisfaction at work. * Happier employees have reduced absenteeism, reduced "presenteeism," less stress, and reduced turnover while working with increased energy, creativity, innovation, and dedication. They display an increased ability to cope with life's realities and have an improved perspective on why they are working so hard - and why they should be if they aren't now. And they are healthier. Any and all companies and organizations who want to maximize their investment in human capital, attract and retain the best and the brightest, and remain competitive in the global world of today and tomorrow should consider making this book required reading for all stakeholders.
Book Synopsis Oxford and the Evangelical Succession by : Marcus Loane
Download or read book Oxford and the Evangelical Succession written by Marcus Loane and published by . This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the stories of five key ministers of the 18th and 19th centuries who changed the whole spirit of the Church of England - and whose influence is still seen today. People today are frantically searching for security and are increasingly not finding it in a material philosophy where other people dictate to us. A church that hopes to transform this society needs to look to those who were enabled to perform the same task in a similar era. Each one of these men was associated with Oxford whilst proving their mettle as spiritual leaders. Each one kept alive and added to the passionate flame of a remarkable line of influential church leaders. No lesser authority than J. C. Ryle placed George Whitefield (1714-1770) as the foremost Christian leader of the 18th century. He, in turn, passed the torch to John Newton (1725-1807). Newton was as a spiritual father to Thomas Scott (1747-1821) and Richard Cecil (1748-1810) and they in turn were the spiritual guides to Daniel Wilson (1778-1858). Wilson launched a missionary emphasis still seen today in Oxford churches. What this book helps us understand is that the situation that prevailed when these men influenced their society is similar to that of today. If we want to change the world then their stories could inspire us to do just that. Sir Marcus Loane has also written Cambridge and the Evangelical Succession ( ISBN 987-1-84550-244-7).
