Frank Baum Here two giant imaginations take on Little Boy Blue, The Cat and the Fiddle, Old King Cole, Mistress Mary, Jack Horner, The Man in the Moon, Hickory, Dickory, Dock, Bo-Peep, Tommy Tucker, Humpty Dumpty, The Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Miss Muffet and others. To create Mother Goose in Prose, the man who gave us The Wonderful Wizard of Oz started with the bare bones of the celebrated nursery rhymes and embroidered them as only a master storyteller could. Now Mary Quite Contrary lives in a real house, has a mother and is visited in her garden by a Squire. Humpty Dumpty is far from just a five line verse here and, once read, his will never be just a five line story again. Did you ever wonder how the old woman's house got to resemble a shoe? In case the reader doesn't get the picture, Baum departs from his storytelling to draw it himself. This is a charming book, with a warm introduction by Baum, who takes care to trace the vague but fascinating history of the rhymes back to 1650, through the three countries that claim Mother Goose for their own. But "the songs that cluster around her name are what we love," he reminds us. "Many of these nursery rhymes," Baum says, "are complete tales in themselves. Book excerpt: THERE once lived a poor widow who supported herself and her only son by gleaning in the fieldsthe stalks of grain that had been missed by the reapers. Her little cottage was at the foot of abeautiful valley, upon the edge of the river that wound in and out among the green hills; andalthough poor, she was contented with her lot, for her home was pleasant and her lovely boy was aconstant delight to her.He had big blue eyes, and fair golden curls, and he loved his good mother very dearly, and wasnever more pleased than when she allowed him to help her with her work. And so the years passed happily away till the boy was eight years old, but then the widow fellsick, and their little store of money melted gradually away."I don't know what we shall do for bread," she said, kissing her boy with tears in her eyes, "for Iam not yet strong enough to work, and we have no money left.""But I can work," answered the boy; "and I'm sure if I go to the Squire up at the Hall he will giveme something to do."At first the widow was reluctant to consent to this, since she loved to keep her child at her side, but finally, as nothing else could be done, she decided to let him go to see the Squire.Being too proud to allow her son to go to the great house in his ragged clothes, she made him anew suit out of a pretty blue dress she had herself worn in happier times, and when it was finishedand the boy dressed in it, he looked as pretty as a prince in a fairy tale. For the bright blue jacket setoff his curls to good advantage, and the color just matched the blue of his eyes. His trousers wereblue, also, and she took the silver buckles from her own shoes and put them on his, that he mightappear the finer. And then she brushed his curls and placed his big straw hat upon them and senthim away with a kiss to see the Squire

Book excerpt: Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) was an American author best known for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema. Born and raised in upstate New York, Baum moved west after an unsuccessful stint as a theater producer and playwright. He and his wife opened a store in South Dakota and he edited and published a newspaper. They then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and published children's literature, coming out with the first Oz book in 1900. While continuing his writing, among his final projects he sought to establish a movie studio focused on children's films in Los Angeles, California.

Book excerpt: This was the first of Baum's books for children; it is a collection of very short stories, each based upon one of the familiar rhymes of Mother Goose. In the introduction, Baum explains that many of the rhymes "are but bare suggestions, leaving the imagination to weave in the details of the story. . .1 have thought the children might like to have the stories told at greater length.. . [and] for that reason I have written this book." Although he tells us that he has "followed mainly the suggestions of the rhymes", actually the tales are original inventions of the author rather than (as one might suppose from the title) merely expansions of the old nursery rhymes. Dorothy, a little farm girl, appears in the last story, and it is likely that she is the original idea for the Dorothy who later becomes the heroine of Oz.Coycoy brings great works of literature from the past centuries, holding the highest standards and reproduce the text as its earliest readers would have encountered it.
