I did so for two reasons: First, my inability and inexperience as a writer; second, the pain which the effort would cost me. But, finally, the honored and lamented Dr. Robert Richardson, of West Virginia, who was long a co-laborer of the illustrious Alexander Campbell, and who knew me well, convinced-me that it was my duty to write. With many tears, I have sacrificed my feelings at the shrine of duty. I claim for my narrative no literary merit, but I have tried to make it as accurate in statement as it is sincere in design. It has pained me to be compelled to place some, who were dear to me, in an unfavorable light; but the necessities of the case demanded it. I have written an unvarnished story of a life of many vicissitudes, hoping that my readers may derive strength from it under trials, temptations, pain, privation, persecution, and exposure. I send it forth to the world with the earnest prayer that the gracious God who, in all my outgoings, my incomings, and my shortcomings, has ever been my best Friend may make it a blessing to all who read it.
