Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clarence: The Story of a Mine The distraction of the theatre over, that dull, vague, but aching sense of loneliness which was daily growing upon him returned with greater vigor. He leaned back in the coupe and gloomily reflected. He had been married scarcely a year, yet even in the illusions of the honeymoon the woman, older than himself, and the widow of his old patron, had half unconsciously reasserted herself, and slipped back into the domination of her old position. It was at first pleasant enough, - this half-maternal protectorate which is apt to mingle even with the affections of younger women, - and Clarence, in his easy, half-feminine intuition of the sex, yielded, as the strong are apt to yield, through the very consciousness of their own superiority. But this is a quality the weaker are not apt to recognize, and the woman who has once tasted equal power with her husband not only does not easily relegate it, but even makes its continuance a test of the affections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deep Down: A Tale of the Cornish Mines To Cornishmen who may do me the honour to peruse these pages, I have to prefer the request that they will bear in remembrance that they read a book which is not a record of facts, but a story founded on facts, in the composition of which I have, to a considerable extent, transposed time, place, and cir cumstance, as the exigencies of the case required always, however, endeavouring to convey a truthful impression both when treating of fact and playing with fancy. Particularly would I beg of them to believe that I have endeavoured to avoid giving un intentional ofi'ence, and that, in the names used and the characters introduced, no one now alive is directly pointed at, although some of my friends of St. Just will probably recognize incidents that occurred to themselves, saddled on the shoulders of some of the actors in the tale. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maruja, the Story of a Mine: And Other Tales The trail he took led to one of the scant watercourses that issued, half spent, from the car'iada, to fade out utterly on the hot June plain. It was thickly bordered with wil lows and alders, that made an arbored and feasible path through the dense woods and undergrowth. He continued along it as if aimlessly; stopping from time to time to look at different objects in a dull mechanical fashion, as if rather to prolong his useless hours, than from any curious instinct, and to occasionally dip in the unfrequent pools of water the few crusts of bread he had taken from his pocket. Even this appeared to be suggested more by coincidence of material in the bread and water, than from the promptings of hunger. At last he reached a cuplike hollow in the hills lined with wild clover and thick with resinous odors. Here he crept under a manzanita bush and disposed himself to sleep. The act showed he was already familiar with the local habits of his class, who used the unfailing dry starlit nights for their wanderings, and spent the hours of glaring sunshine asleep or resting in some wayside shadow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Blind Lead: The Story of a Mine As the miner caught sight of the figure in the door way he waved his hand, and the baby in her arms began to kick and crow. She set him down on the oor and passed to the kitchen to pour the water into the teapot and complete the preparations for supper. One noted in following her the order and cleanliness everywhere. The three rooms into which the house was partitioned, kitchen, Sitting-room, and bedroom, were so neat as to almost beget discomfort. That the Occupants were above the commoner class Of workers one could infer, for in the sitting-room, rather than in the kitchen, was spread the evening meal, and instead Of the checked Oil-cloth or the bare board, a clean white cloth adorned the table. Everything, however, was Of the cheapest and plainest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelly's Silver Mine: A Story of Colorado Life It was Christmas morning; and Nelly March and her brother Rob were lying wide awake in their beds, wondering if it would do for them to get up and look in their stockings to see what Santa Claus had brought them. Nelly and Rob were twins; but you would never have thought so, when you looked at them, for Nelly was half a head taller than Rob, and a good deal heavier. She had always been well; but Rob had always been a delicate child. lie was ill now with a bad sore throat, and had been shut up in the house for ten days. This was the reason that he and Nelly were in bed at six o'clock this Christmas morning, instead of scampering all about the house, and waking everybody up with their shouts of delight over their presents. When they went to bed the night before, Mrs. March had said: "Now, Rob, you must promise me not to get out of bed till it is broad daylight, and the house is thoroughly warm. You will certainly take cold, if you get up in the cold room." "Mamma," said Nelly, "I needn't stay in bed just because Rob has to, need I? I can take his presents out of the stocking, and carry them to him." "You shan't, either," said Rob, fretfully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Down in a Mine: Or Buried Alive If you were to travel through this country on any working day in the week, you would see thick smoke rising from black-looking fur naces, and spreading above and around, so as to darken the sky; but not many people would be visible, and those whom you might meet would have a strange, blackened look about them. You would probably pass clus ters of black-looking ruins, which were once cottages of working men, but which have been deserted long ago; and you might well wonder at the desolate appearance of every thing around you. If you were to travel through this country by night, you would be startled, perhaps, by seeing large, blazing fires in every direction, appearing to rise out of the ground in huge flames. And either by night or by day, the young traveler would very naturally be glad to get away as soon as possible from so dreary a scene. But, though every thing looks so black and dismal, the part of England I have described is very important to the whole country, and the people who live in it are useful and indus trions, and, let us h0pe, contented and happy also; though, in some respects, it is a strange life that they lead: but I shall speak of this in another chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of the Emma Mine I am a man of but moderate means, am in the employ of a large public company, and I am certainly not a speculator in the ordinary sense of the term; for, until I made this Emma investment, I had never touched a share either in a mining or any other joint stock speculation. In November, 1871, I had a little money to spare; and seeing a notice of the Emma Company in the press, I obtained a Prospectus, and became strongly impressed with the statements in it, vouched for as they were by the names of such men of high standing, and especially with that of General Schenck, the United States Minister. Being desirous of adding to my income in a legitimate way, I took such shares as were within my means, as a bond fidc investor. You never have a proper good storm in this miserable bay! I like to see the great billows come rolling and tossing upon the shore, covering the beach with their creamy foam, and tossing on high their sparkling spray! But here, even when I can see the distant waters all whitened with the gale, the waves come creeping in as if they were ashamed Of themselves, and had not life or spirit for a toss! The very sea-mews never come near us here; not a swallow builds its nest under our eaves one never hears the voice Of a bird 1.
