Book excerpt: The Stones Of Venice (Volume I): Volume I - The Foundations This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: "More than simply a survey of an ancient city's most significant buildings, The Stones of Venice first published in three volumes between 1851 and 1853 is an expression of a philosophy of art, nature, and morality that goes beyond art history, and has inspired such thinkers as Leo Tolstoy, Marcel Proust, and Mahatma Gandhi. Volume I, intended as the groundwork for the author's subsequent architectural teaching, provides a brief history of Venice and an analysis of architecture s functional and ornamental aspects. Unabridged, and containing Ruskin s original drawings, this guide to the moral, spiritual, and aesthetic implications of architecture will be appreciated by students and scholars alike. The preeminent art critic of his time, British writer JOHN RUSKIN (1819 1900) had a profound influence upon European painting, architecture, and aesthetics of the 19th and 20th centuries. His immense body of literary works include Modern Painters, Volume I IV (1843 1856); The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849); Unto This Last (1862); Munera Pulveris (1862 3); The Crown of Wild Olive (1866); Time and Tide (1867); and Fors Clavigera (1871-84)."

Book excerpt: More than 150 years after its first publication in 1851–53, this monumental work by a great Victorian writer, critic, and artist remains among the most influential books on art and architecture ever written. In The Stones of Venice, a survey of the principal buildings in the "Paradise of Cities," John Ruskin developed an aesthetic and intellectual argument that lingers at the heart of the debate over the meaning of architecture and craftsmanship. This work applies the general principles enunciated in Ruskin's The Seven Lamps of Architecture to Venetian architecture. The first volume, The Foundations, presents a short history of the city and discusses architecture's functional and ornamental aspects. Volume II, The Sea-Stories, examines the Byzantine era and the brilliant architectural developments of Venice's Gothic period. The third volume, The Fall, consists of a trenchant examination of the Venetian spiritual and architectural decline during the Renaissance. Ruskin believed that an understanding of architecture (and painting, and nature) requires a well-informed respect for history and truth. Readers will find no better guide to the spiritual content and aesthetic pleasures of architecture than this eminent teacher and scholar. Featuring all of Ruskin's original drawings, this is the only unabridged edition of The Stones of Venice currently available.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stones of Venice, Vol. 1: The Foundations Thus much, however, it is necessary for the reader to know; that, when I planned the work, I had materials by me, col' lected at different times of sojourn in Venice during the last seventeen years, which it seemed to me might be arranged with. Little diflculty, and which I believe tabs of value as illustrating the history of Southern Gothic Requiring, how: evci, some clearer assurance respecting certain points. Of chronology, I went to Venice finally 1n the autumn of 1849, not doubting but that the dates of the principal edifices of the ancient' city were either ascertained, or ascertainable with out extraordinary research. To my consternation, I found that the Venetian antiquaries were not agreed within a cen tury as to the date of the building of the facades of the Ducal Palace, and that nothing was known of any other civil edifice of the early city, except that at some time or other it had been fitted up for somebody 8 reception, and been thereupon fresh painted. Every date in question was determinable only by internal evidence, and it became necessary for me to examine not only every one of the older palaces, stone by stone, but. Book excerpt: "This title was first published in 2000: John Ruskin's three-volume "The Stones of Venice" (1851-3) remains massively influential in art and architecture. To mark the centenary of Ruskin's death, this illustrated guide links Ruskin's descriptions of individual buildings with a photograph of the architecture and sculpture as it is today. Much of Ruskin's prose is reproduced, together with many of his drawings and watercolours and a number of 19th-century engravings. Sarah Quill's photographs identify the details described by Ruskin and show the extent to which the city's architecture has survived, or changed, since first publication of "The Stones of Venice". The opening chapter provides an introduction to Ruskin's involvment with Venice and to the periods and styles of Venetian architecture."--Provided by publisher.
