Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stewardship of the Soil And yet sacred as is the soil and binding as is the farmer's obligation to society, the means for providing the world's food is nevertheless at his mercy. It is a well-known fact that the soil can readily be depleted of its fertility and thus robbed of its strength by a system of exploitation, commonly referred to as "extensive farming." Too much of our land is being thus exploited. On the other hand the productiveness of the soil may be very greatly improved. Denmark, Belgium, Germany, and other European nations have fully demonstrated that by the application of science to the art of agriculture, the productiveness of the soil can be multiplied almost to the limit of necessity. A Progressive Agriculture. Fortunately Nature has supplied every means for the development of a progressive and permanent agriculture. It is also obvious that it is man's privilege, if not his mission, to improve upon Nature - to substitute quality for mere physical endurance, in agricultural products. By the grace of Providence the individuals of the animal and vegetable kingdoms were not created inflexible in habit or perfect in form, but they may be changed in character and quality and intrinsic worth at the will of the intelligent and observing farmer. To this end agricultural education lends its beneficent influence. Man's dominion over Nature would be such in name only were it not for the class-room and the laboratory, for research and investigation; for by these means scientific knowledge is obtained and diffused and eventually brought to bear upon the solution of the most vital problems that concern the human family. These problems center largely around food and clothing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Conservation It is not strange, therefore, that in many communities exploitive farming continues beyond its legitimate life. In fact, such a change could hardly proceed in the older settled States while the unbounded West Offered the renter and the farm laborer the Opportunity to acquire a home by gift from the Government, on soil fertile enough to permit, for. One or two generations, profitable farming with little equipment other than energy and courage. At the same time, the nation as a whole did not suffer from the depletion of the soil in the Older States, for the reason that increased production on the rich soils newly brought under cultivation in the West kept pace with'the ever increasing demand for food. Hence it was that the decrease In the agricultural population and the abandonment of a large part ofthe land formerly tilled in the Eastern States attracted little attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soil: Its Nature, Relations, and Fundamental Principles of Management Believing fully in the soundness of these words, the writer, in preparing this treatise, has aimed to present the most practical and fundamental facts and principles concerning the soil as largely as possible from the stand point of the How? And the Why? And at the same time to pause now and then to View some of the wonderful adaptations of structure to physical environment which the long processes of evolution have finally produced. We can well afford to do this because the future develop ment of agriculture can be made most rapid and most sure, not more by giving to the farmer new facts than by making him able to Observe, interpret, and correlate the facts which each and every year's planting, hoeing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Use the Land and Save the Soil The Soil Conservation Service is organized especially to give the most help possible to soil conservation districts. It has an office, usually called a work-unit, in each soil conservation district that has requested aid. In some of the larger districts it has more than one work-unit. A soil conservationist, commonly called a farm planner, is in charge of each work-unit. He may have special assistants; that depends on the amount of work and whether there are some special forestry, engineering, or other problems that require the services of a specialist in that field. The farm planner and his assistants spend most of their time helping farmers develop conservation plans for their entire farms, and [putting the plans into effect. Download or read book The Principles of Soil Management (Classic Reprint) written by T. Lyttleton Lyon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Soil Management In 1895 the preface was written for the Rural Science Series. It set forth the purpose of the Series to be the desire to place in readable form the best results of scientific thought and discovery relating to agriculture and country life, in order that the general public might be made aware of the progress, and that farmers might be led more effectively to apply the information in their daily work. It was the hope that the Series, under the present writer's direction or another's, might gradually extend itself to the whole range of agricultural scientific literature. The books now included in The Rural Science Series are about two dozen, making nearly two volumes, on the average, for each year. The number of writers on agricultural topics is increasing, the knowledge on all subjects is rapidly accumulating, and the reading-public is gradually enlarging; there is every reason to expect, therefore, that the Series will extend itself still more rapidly in the years to come. It was considered to be an auspicious circumstance that the Rural Science Series began with a book on the soil, for this grounded the enterprise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management of the Soil The soil is the source of all agricultural products. To his knowledge of it and its management the farmer must owe much of his success. It is important then, that the principles underlying soil management should be given a definite and thorough study at the beginning of the course in Agriculture. It has been our aim to set forth the essential principles of the management of the soil in such a manner that the student may grasp them at the outset. It is intended that the students shall carefully work out the experiments and problems for themselves, especially those adapted to the region in which the school is located. Such work will mean infinitely more than lectures by the teacher and will be much longer remembered. We know that there are different opinions upon some of these topics, but we have tried to give only those con elusions verified by experience or supported by authorities which are among the best. We are indebted to Dr. John A. Widtsoe, president of the University of Utah, and a widely known authority on agriculture in the irrigated and the dry-farming regions of the West, for the reading of the manuscript, and for helpful suggestions. Book Synopsis Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them (Classic Reprint) by : S. W. Fletcher
Download or read book Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them (Classic Reprint) written by S. W. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known. Book Synopsis The Spirit of the Soil by : Paul B. Thompson
Download or read book The Spirit of the Soil written by Paul B. Thompson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of The Spirit of the Soil: Agriculture and Environmental Ethics, Paul B. Thompson reviews four worldviews that shape competing visions for agriculture. Productionists have sought increasing yields—to make two seeds grow where only one grew before—while traditional visions of good farming have stressed stewardship. These traditional visions have been challenged by two more worldviews: a call for a total cost accounting for farming and an advocacy for a holistic perspective. Thompson argues that an environmentally defensible systems approach must draw upon all four worldviews, recognizing their flaws and synthesizing their strengths in a new vision of sustainable agriculture. This classic 1995 study has been thoroughly revised and significantly expanded in its second edition with up-to-date examples of agriculture’s impact on the environment. These include extensive discussions of new pesticides and the effects of animal agriculture on climate and other areas of the environment. In addition, a new final chapter discusses sustainability, which has become a dominant idea within environmental studies and agrarian political philosophy.
