Book excerpt: The European Agency information project "The State of Occupational Safety and Health in the European Union - Pilot Study" is a first step to the development of a system for monitoring safety and health in the European Union. It aims at providing decision-makers at Member State and European level with an overview of the current safety and health situation in the European Union to support the identification of common challenges and priority areas for preventive actions. The project report identifies sectors/occupations most identified to be at risk to. The risks are categorised as physical exposures, posture and movement exposures, handling chemicals and psycho-social working conditions. The context of work and the occupational safety and health outcome were also given. Focal Points (Authorities nominated by each Member State) provided information on trends and needs for the development of additional preventive actions related to these risks. Emerging risks were identified as change in work organisation, stress, manual handling, use of new chemicals, violence and repetitive strain. Workers under the age of 18, older workers and workers in health and social work were identified as sensitive work groups. A CD-ROM (contents: Consolidated Report; National Reports and the Manual) is included with this publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates four core characteristics of occupational health and safety legal systems in order to provide a comparative and critical analysis of the similarities and differences in protecting the health and safety of workers at the workplace. In addition to analysing the health and safety regulations, the book addresses corresponding oversight and enforcement mechanisms. It compares and contrasts five different legal systems, namely those of the EU, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and China. Beyond offering an overview of the modes of OHS regulation, instruments and legal enforcement practices, the book helps to answer the question of how to improve working environments in order to protect workers from all kinds of dangers encountered at the workplace. The intended readership includes researchers with a background in labour law, comparative law, Chinese law and/or European Union law.

This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global economy and its business environment, and thus the world of work, have recently been influenced by demographic and social changes, globalisation, as well as rapid development and introduction of novel, sophisticated and previously unknown technologies and new business models, especially in the context of the so-called fourth industrial revolution. These changes pose a number of challenges in terms of maintaining and improving occupational safety and health (OSH) management performance, as traditional approaches to OSH management in new working environments may no longer be effective. In view of the above, the overall goal of this book is to present new approaches and methods for improving the effectiveness of OSH management. They are based on state-of-the-art research and are in line with the latest trends and concepts in the field. The book focuses on five thematic areas, which are discussed in respective chapters: 1) Implementing the process approach to OSH management; 2) Improving OSH management systems with fuzzy cognitive maps; 3) Implementing strategic thinking approaches in relation to OSH management; 4) Integrating OSH management within the framework of the CSR concept; 5) Enhancing OSH management processes through the use of smart digital technologies. The methods and solutions discussed may be considered as specific "opportunities" for the improvement to be taken into account in the processes of implementing and maintaining an OSH management system in light of the requirements of the new ISO 45001 standard.
