Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of a Sportsman Naturalist in India Since the Armistice Part II has received some revision. The rest remains as written. In Jungle by-ways I dealt fully with the description and habits of the various game animals of the Plains of India. I have not therefore considered it necessary to repeat this matter here. The sporting anecdotes and material selected from my note books, which form the greater part of the book, are designed to lead up to and emphasize the necessity which exists of affording an adequate protection to the Game and other Ani mals of India. That this matter, with its threefold objects of maintaining the animals of the Chase, securing a revenue from the economic products yielded by the Fauna of the country, and preserving the Fauna as a whole, is one of the first importance, is known to that small band of shikaris who are both sportsmen and naturalists. A perusal of the chapter dealing with the operations of the Indian unarmed poacher will, of itself, bear evidence to the fact that India is threatened with an irretrievable decrease in and deteriora tion of the most interesting members of its Fauna. To Sir John Prescott Hewett, Mrs. E. M. Sparkes, and my Wife my thanks are due for the striking Plates which illustrate the Diary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's Book for India Nearly a century has elapsed since the first appearance of "Oriental Field Sports," dedicated to His Majesty King George the Third by Captain Williamson of the Bengal Army. Some of the original plates of that now rare work having recently come into the Editor's possession, he was prompted to refer to the book itself and was much struck by the wonderful opportunities for sport which must have come in the way of those whose career took them to India in the early years of the nineteenth century. Hundreds of books on Indian sport have been published since then, one of the most recent and most practical being Mr Russell's "Bullet and Shot in Indian Forest, Plain and Hill," which, however, as indicated by the title, deals with one sport only. What Mr Russell and many others have done for Indian shooting, Mr H. S. Thomas and one or two other angling enthusiasts have done for Indian fishing; but there has not up to the present been any one manual essaying to offer sound, practical information, advice without anecdote, on any and every outdoor pastime that may in that country fall to the lot of the official, military or civilian, planter, or even bird of passage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life Some fourteen years ago I published a volume of memoirs, in the compiling of which I had the kind assistance of the Duke of Beaufort and Mr. G. A. B. Dewar. It having been suggested to me that I have run through a good many experiences since then, I have been tempted to venture into print once more, and the result is the present volume. A portion of the former book, which deals with my earlier experiences, has naturally been retained, but, with the assistance of Mr. Harold Simpson, it has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date, and I have added another fourteen years of sport and adventure by land, sea, and air. If any apology is needed, I ofier it here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation of an Indian Official The conditions of life in England are so different from the conditions of life in India, that I should not be surprised if the title Recreations, ' applied to the literary labour of this book, were gently cavilled at. And yet no other title would represent so accurately the circumstances under which its contents were written In Europe, ' if I may be allowed to quote from my own reflections in another work in Europe, where there is so much to tempt a man into the sun shine and Open air; where the streams invite the angler the slopes of the mountains, the botanist; the forests, the sportsman; and Where the merry laugh and innocent smiles of the daughters of the land invite all, it must require the virtue of a St. Anthony to persevere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an "epistle" to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. However, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world, and knew most of the celebrities of his time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shikar Sketches: With Notes on Indian Field-Sports Should, therefore, this volume meet with any slight approval from sportsmen, it will, I be lieve, be more due to the clever pencils of the artists than to the unskilled pen of the author, who is but a novice in the fields of literature, and whose hand has been more accustomed to the use of rifle, spear, and gun than of the pen. If the perusal of these pages should prove the means of wiling away an idle hour, one of the writer's objects will have been attained; and if further it should induce younger men to devote their superfluous energies to excelling in the sports of the field, and acquiring some knowledge of Natural History, instead of wasting time, money, and health in vice and frivolity, these pages, if they do no other good, will not have been written quite in vain.
