Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory look at how Roger Williams shaped the nature of religion, political power, and individual rights in America. For four hundred years, Americans have wrestled with and fought over two concepts that define the nature of the nation: the proper relation between church and state and between a free individual and the state. These debates began with the extraordinary thought and struggles of Roger Williams, who had an unparalleled understanding of the conflict between a government that justified itself by "reason of state"-i.e. national security-and its perceived "will of God" and the "ancient rights and liberties" of individuals. This is a story of power, set against Puritan America and the English Civil War. Williams's interactions with King James, Francis Bacon, Oliver Cromwell, and his mentor Edward Coke set his course, but his fundamental ideas came to fruition in America, as Williams, though a Puritan, collided with John Winthrop's vision of his "City upon a Hill." Acclaimed historian John M. Barry explores the development of these fundamental ideas through the story of the man who was the first to link religious freedom to individual liberty, and who created in America the first government and society on earth informed by those beliefs. The story is essential to the continuing debate over how we define the role of religion and political power in modern American life.

Book excerpt: A systemic problem plagues the local and global church: we habitually lose the gospel. The gospel has been equated with everything from personal prosperity to laws for virtuous living. But all such perceptions paralyze the mission of the church, which is aimed at finding true abundant and joyful life in Christ. In Galatians, the Apostle Paul engages in a passionate defense of the gospel. It may be a short book, but the consequences of its teaching are truly enormous. Martin Luther found such joy and peace in its pages that he said, "The Epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I am as it were in wedlock. It is my Katherine"--Luther's beloved wife. The critical message of Galatians takes us into the heart of an experience--the enjoyment of God's presence and everlasting peace--one which sets us free to love and be loved. In Live in Liberty, Daniel Bush and Noel Due bring out the spiritual message of Paul's words, helping you apply it to your mind and soul so that you may experience the liberating presence of God. Also included is a study guide by Lee Beckham.--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: A revelatory look at the separation of church and state in America—from the New York Times bestselling author of The Great Influenza For four hundred years, Americans have fought over the proper relationships between church and state and between a free individual and the state. This is the story of the first battle in that war of ideas, a battle that led to the writing of the First Amendment and that continues to define the issue of the separation of church and state today. It began with religious persecution and ended in revolution, and along the way it defined the nature of America and of individual liberty. Acclaimed historian John M. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideal perfection, called Baqa by Sufis, is termed 'Najat' in Islam, 'Nirvana' in Buddhism, 'Salvation' in Christianity, and 'Mukhti' in Hinduism. This is the highest condition attainable, and all ancient prophets and sages experienced it, and taught it to the world. Baqa is the original state of God. At this state every being must arrive some day, consciously or unconsciously, before or after death. The beginning and end of all beings is the same, difference only existing during the journey. There are three ways in man's journey towards God. The first is the way of ignorance, through which each must travel. It is like a person walking for miles in the sun while carrying a heavy load on his shoulder, who, when fatigued, throws away the load and falls asleep under the shade of a tree. Such is the condition of the average person, who spends his life blindly under the influence of his senses and gathers the load of his evil actions; the agonies of his earthly longings creating a hell through which he must pass to reach the destination of his journey. With regard to him the Qur'an says, 'He who is blind in life, shall also be blind in the hereafter.' The next way is that of devotion, which is for true lovers. Rumi says, 'Man may be the lover of man or the lover of God; after his perfection in either he is taken before the King of love.' Devotion is the heavenly wine, which intoxicates the devotee until his heart becomes purified from all infirmities and there remains the happy vision of the Beloved, which lasts to the end of the journey. 'Death is a bridge, which unites friend to friend' ( Sayings of Mohammed). The third is the way of wisdom, accomplished only by the few. The disciple disregards life's momentary comforts, unties himself from all earthly bondages and turns his eyes toward God, inspired with divine wisdom. He gains command over his body, his thoughts and feelings, and is thereby enabled to create his own heaven within himself, that he may rejoice until merged into the eternal goal. 'We have stripped the veil from thine eyes, and thy sight today is keen', says the Qur'an. All must journey along one of these three paths, but in the end they arrive at one and the same goal. As it is said in the Qur'an, 'It is He who multiplied you on the earth, and to Him you shall be gathered.'

Book excerpt: This is a study of how present-day Sufis following Hazrat Inayat Khan seek to experience spiritual liberty in daily life. Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927) was an Indian mystic who left for America in 1910 in order to bring a universal Sufi Message to the Western world. His teachings, The Sufi Message, describe Unity of Being as the mystical relationship between God, man and creation. The Sufi Movement is an international organisation of people following the Sufi Message. It functions as a framework for people searching an embodied spirituality that transcends the varieties of religious beliefs. This study reveals dimensions of the individual's spiritual and psychological development and shows how this is prompted by guidance and esoteric practices. The individual's development process involves different important elements including gradual annihilation of the ego and assimilation of more complex images of the self. Self-realisation is pictured as an outcome of this process. Personal experience of God within is seen significant for self-realisation. In addition to the individual and organisational dimensions explored, this book also gives insight into the historical development of the Sufi Movement and its reception in The Netherlands.

Book excerpt: That churches are one of the most important cornerstones of black political organization is a commonplace. In this history of African American Protestantism and American politics at the end of the Civil War, Nicole Myers Turner challenges the idea of black churches as having always been politically engaged. Using local archives, church and convention minutes, and innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, Turner reveals how freedpeople in Virginia adapted strategies for pursuing the freedom of their souls to worship as they saw fit—and to participate in society completely in the evolving landscape of emancipation. Freedpeople, for both evangelical and electoral reasons, were well aware of the significance of the physical territory they occupied, and they sought to organize the geographies that they could in favor of their religious and political agendas at the outset of Reconstruction. As emancipation included opportunities to purchase properties, establish black families, and reconfigure gender roles, the ministry became predominantly male, a development that affected not only discourses around family life but also the political project of crafting, defining, and teaching freedom. After freedmen obtained the right to vote, an array of black-controlled institutions increasingly became centers for political organizing on the basis of networks that mirrored those established earlier by church associations. We are proud to announce that this book will also be published as an enhanced open-access e-book on a companion website hosted by Fulcrum, an innovative publishing platform launched by Michigan Publishing at the University of Michigan Library. The Fulcrum version of the book can be located using this link: https://doi.org/10.5149/9781469655253_Turner.
