Frozen ground is the product of cold climates as well as a variety of environmental factors. Its major characteristic is the accumulation of large quantities of ice which may exceed 90% by volume. Soil water changing to ice results in ground heaving, while thawing of this ice produces ground subsidence often accompanied by soil flowage. Permafrost is very susceptible to changes in weather and climate as well as to changes in the microenvironment. Cold weather produces contraction of the ground, resulting in cracking of the soil as well as breakup of concrete, rock, etc. Thus permafrost regions have unique landforms and processes not found in warmer lands. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an introduction to the characteristics of permafrost. Four chapters deal with its definition and characteristics, the unique processes operating there, the factors affecting it, and its general distribution. Part 2 consists of seven chapters describing the characteristic landforms unique to these areas and the processes involved in their formation. Part 3 discusses the special problems encountered by engineers in construction projects including settlements, roads and railways, the oil and gas industry, mining, and the agricultural and forest industries. The three authors represent three countries and three language groups, and together have over 120 years of experience of working in permafrost areas throughout the world. The book contains over 300 illustrations and photographs, and includes an extensive bibliography in order to introduce the interested reader to the large current literature. The variation of unfrozen water with temperature causes a soil system to freeze of thaw over a finite temperature range. Exact and approximate solutions are given for conduction phase change of plane layers of soil with unfrozen water contents that vary linearly and quadratically with temperature. The temperature and phase change depths were found to vary significantly from those predicted for the constant-temperature or Neumann problem. The thermal conductivity and specific heat of the soil within the mushy zone varied as a function of unfrozen water content. It was found that the effect of specific heat is negligible, while the effect of variable thermal conductivity can be accounted for by a proper choice of thermal properties used in the constant-thermal-property solution. The rate of frost heave is influenced because chemicals modify water migration and depress the freezing point in soils. Solutes are concentrated when they are expelled from crystallizing ice, modifying adsorbed film thicknesses, depressing freezing points, creating concentration gradients, altering forces between particles or between ice particles, and modifying the chemical potential of the water. These effects often have counteracting influences on frost heave. Solute expulsion during freezing produces a 'fringe-like' freezing front in saline soils, primarily because of freezing point depression; this may also be true in 'non-saline' soils. Heave can be reduced by adding chemicals to soil to depress the freezing point to modify the soil's structure or hydraulic characteristics. Book excerpt: "In cold regions, the unfrozen water content plays an important role in a number of processes, including permafrost thaw, groundwater-surface water exchange, and heat and solute transport in soils. The relationship between unfrozen water content and sub-freezing temperatures (or suction at the ice-water interface) is known as the soil-freezing characteristic curve (SFCC). Previous studies have shown that considering the unfrozen water content can significantly improve accuracy in heat and water transport modelling. However, the differences in how various soil-freezing functions and parameterizations affect hydrogeologic properties and thermal regimes are not well understood. In this thesis, SUTRA-ice, a numerical model that couples groundwater flow and energy transport with dynamic freeze-thaw processes, is used to simulate and compare the performance and parameterization of three widely used SFCC functions (exponential, piecewise linear, and power law). The shape of the SFCC is dependent on parameters including the residual unfrozen water content, freezing point depression, or empirical constants characteristic of a given soil. A two-dimensional homogeneous model with time-dependent thermal and hydrological surface boundary conditions represents a simple permafrost cross-section. Results show that the type and parameterization of the SFCC significantly affects permafrost evolution, active zone dynamics, and stream discharge in coupled heat and water transfer modelling of frozen soil. Depending on the SFCC used, the residual liquid water saturation and freezing point depression can control the level of ice saturation in the model, talik and permafrost formation, as well as the thickness of the active layer"--

Book excerpt: The soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) is the basis to explain a variety of processes in unsaturated soils, ranging from transport phenomena to mechanical behaviors. In this paper, a new method is developed for SWCC estimation based on the similarity between the freezing/thawing process and drying/wetting process in soils. The theoretical basis for this method is first reviewed. The concept of the soil freezing characteristic curve (SFCC) is introduced to describe the relationship between the unfrozen water content and matric suction in frozen soils. SFCC is analogous to SWCC in that both of them describe the energy status of liquid water associated with liquid water content. Relationships between SWCC and SFCC are discussed. To measure the SFCC, a thermo-time domain reflectometry (TDR) sensor was developed which combines both temperature sensors and conventional TDR sensor. The TDR module and algorithm measured the bulk free water content of soils during the freezing/thawing processes, while the built-in thermocouples measured the internal temperature distribution. SFCCs were obtained from the simultaneously measured TDR and temperature data. Experiments were conducted on a few types of soils to validate this new procedure. The SFCC was obtained from thermo-TDR data collected in specimens subjected to a controlled thawing process, while the SWCC was directly measured by ASTM D5298, the filter paper method. Reasonable agreements were found between SWCC and SFCC. The experimental results implied that the SWCC could be estimated from SFCC, which also provided more evidence of the similarity of freezing/thawing processes and desorption/sorption processes.
