Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: The Economics of European Integration, language: English, abstract: An analysis of how and to which extent the Slovak Republic can deal with membership within an incomplete monetary union. This paper discusses the developments in the Slovak Republic in the context of its membership within a so-called incomplete monetary union, a construct as laid out by De Grauwe in the book "The Economics of Monetary Union". This paper relies on publicly accessible data and, to a lesser degree, expert literature. For many comparisons, the author draws comparisons with the Czech Republic due to its similar size, geographic location and economic position, with the key difference being the Czech Republic’s sovereign currency and the resulting means of independent monetary policy. Additional metrics are also compared to the results of the entire Eurozone and to the largest Eurozone economies of Germany and France. The goal of this paper is to determine to what degree the Slovak Republic benefits from membership within an incomplete monetary union and what steps can or have been taken in order to mitigate the risks of membership.

Book excerpt: The current geopolitical changes taking place in the world economy exert great influence on the EU (and Slovakia’s) foreign trade relations. This monograph examines the impact of geopolitical changes on the EU foreign trade relations with the countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, assesses the impact of the mutual EU and Russia sanctions on the EU foreign trade with the countries selected, and points out the potential for development of Slovakia’s foreign trade relations with these countries. The uniqueness of this monograph lies in the primacy and complexity of the EU foreign trade relations with the countries under consideration and the impact of the mutual EU and Russia sanctions on the EU and Slovakia’s foreign trade with Russia. The outcomes of the conducted research can be of great use to business and government institutions, as well as to European institutions and organizations, teachers, scientists or R&D agencies and others.

This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the economic development of the Slovak Republic from post-Soviet control to present day. The following paper explores the recent economic developments of the Slovak Republic, from its accession into the European Union in the early 2000s, throughout the European monetary crisis in the years 2008 - 2009 and finally reflects upon the country’s current economic state. In doing so, this paper analyzes the most relevant indicators of international and domestic economic well-being and describes some of the underlying factors for these developments. An analysis of the degree to which Slovakia has overcome the hardships imposed by the economic crisis is also presented. The analyses in this paper rely on statistical information available from public databases and, when applicable, consultation of expert literature for an interpretation of the data. When doing so, the author has attempted to provide data for comparison and context, generally with the average from the EU 27 states or of the other Visegrád Group members, when available. This paper only considers a limited number of indicators of economic well-being for these analyses: balance of payments, openness, foreign direct investment, government deficit and debt, inflation, economic growth, employment, and investment. As a result, some other economically relevant topics may be excluded which could provide an even better analysis of the problem. Social costs and other non-economic factors are entirely omitted from this paper although they play an important role in any country’s standard of living. Finally, it is important to note during the analysis of the developments in 2009 and the years afterward that all changes cannot be attributed to the European Debt Crisis as another important event occurred: Slovakia adopted the Euro as its national currency; an event that is often cited as causing initial inflation.

Book excerpt: "At the end of 1995, the Czech Republic was regarded as the clearest success story in the region. It had one of the lowest rates of inflation and the lowest rates of unemployment. The high GDP growth rate looked sustainable, as it was accompanied by a moderate current account deficit, balanced fiscal account and seemed to be underpinned by important structural reform." The Czech Republic was perceived until 1996 as the most successful transition economy in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Czech Republic seems to be the clearest success story in the region. However, the Czech miracle came to a halt in May 1997. Its future economic development and successful integration into the European Union (EU) depends critically on its capacity to recover a sustainable output growth path. To assist the country in achieving its primary goal to join the European Union (EU) in the shortest period of time, this report analyzes economic developments in the Czech Republic since 1997. It focuses on assessing the status of the Czech Republic's economy from the perspective of its pursuit for EU membership. The report is composed of two volumes. The first volume is the summary report that condenses main findings and conclusions. The second volume is the main report. It provides the assessment and technical study of selected key sectors of the Czech economy. The EU accession process dominates the sector analyses, which are outlined in each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slovakia has struggled with a low international profile. Often overlooked as the Czech Republic's little sister, it is a young country with an old culture and history, and a people who are proudly Central (not Eastern) European. Although for much of the twentieth century Czechs and Slovaks lived together in one state, there are important differences between them, differences that ultimately contributed to separation in 1993 and the rebirth of a sovereign Slovak state.Generally speaking, the Slovaks are more “Slavic” than the Czechs—their pace of life is slower, and their spare time is more often filled with friends, family, and music. They are known to be resistant to change, yet change has been a constant in the state's short economic and political history—from the fall of communism in the Velvet Revolution of late 1989, to the Velvet Divorce of Czechoslovakia in 1993, to widespread economic diversification, expansion, and global influence, to European Union membership in 2004, and the adoption of the euro in 2009— and they have adapted with quiet optimism.Slovakia has been referred to as the economic “tiger” of Europe, and now that it has EU membership and a healthy industrial economy, Europeans are starting to take notice. Its popularity as a tourist destination has been growing rapidly in recent years. Slovaks call their country the Heart of Europe—a term that describes not only their geography but the Slovak character, which is warm, deeply hospitable, and immensely proud. Visitors who step outside Bratislava's Staré mesto (Old Town) and take the time to explore the country beyond will discover a landscape of plains, meadows, mountains, natural spas, and hundreds of ancient castles, and a people at once modest, stoical, humorous, and responsive. This book captures the essence of what makes the Slovak people unique and explains something of the quirks and memorable aspects of their lifestyle. It opens a window onto their inner world, their customs and celebrations, and describes what to expect and how to behave in different situations. While the country is not without its frustrations for foreigners, most visitors succumb to its charms. Few have left without yearning to return to “the little big country.”

Book excerpt: The idea for this volume came from the enigma that some Central and Eastern European (CEE) European Union (EU) member states have been keen to join the Eurozone while others have shown persistent reluctance. Moreover, the attitudes towards joining have seemingly not correlated with either the level of economic development or the time spent as part of the EU, nor with any other rational reason such as the level of integration into the EU real economy, or the level of trust in the EU on the part of the public. Therefore, at first sight, the answer to the question ‘why in, why out?’ remains rather unclear. The attractiveness of the currency union has nevertheless not disappeared for the CEE countries. Despite the Eurozone crisis of 2010–13, it was during that time that the Baltic states introduced the euro. Then, after a few years of inactivity, Croatia and Bulgaria successfully applied for membership of the exchange rate mechanism in July 2020, amid the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. At the same time, the three Visegrad countries still using their national currencies – Poland, Czechia and Hungary – no longer have a target date to join the monetary union. This volume aims to discuss these issues from horizontal aspects and through country studies, with contributions from expert authors from, or closely related to, the CEE region.
