There are interludes, like the domestic and social life, the first sexual experience of Joshua, the romantic love affair with Maria Magdalene, the issues of adultery and homosexuality, episodes of crime, suicide, sodomy, rebellion, investigations, and trials. These topics account for the realism and verisimilitude of the story. The indelible presence of the school of mysteries pervades all the way through the work.
