Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, brief encounters between sharks and humans could leave the latter with a vivid memory of the much-maligned fish but no convenient means of identifying it more specifically. With the publication of The Sharks of North American Waters in 1983, everyone from the experienced ichthyologist to the weekend angler had access to concise descriptions and accurate, detailed drawings in this handy field guide to more than one hundred species. All species that have been reported within five hundred nautical miles of U.S. and Canadian shores (plus a few deep-water species from adjacent areas) are illustrated, with summaries of diagnostic characteristics, similar species, geographic range, biology, reproduction, utility, and fishing methods. An illustrated key to the families of sharks, family descriptions, and species characteristics makes field identification simple. Also included is a general account of the evolution of sharks, their anatomy, reproduction, and distribution.

Through bone-chilling accounts in victims' own words, never before published photographs, and detailed maps and charts of attack locations, this book accurately chronicles every known unprovoked shark attack that occurred along the Pacific Coast of North America during the entire Twentieth Century. The author's examination of wound characteristics, recurring locations, and the curious phenomenon of attacks on inanimate objects afford astonishing insights into why sharks attack. These insights form the foundation for his safety recommendations to specific ocean user groups. Based on 40 years' of research, this book willl be of inestimable value to scientists, researchers and educators, as well as anyone that might venture into the waters off the Pacific Coast. The understanding gained from this book will temper fears with knowledge and provide the reader with clear and specific information that may easily make the difference between life and death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features of the valid nominal species of Aprionodon Gill (isodon Valenciennes) and Hypoprion Müller and Henle (hemiodon Valenciennes, macloti Müller and Henle, and signatus Poey), plus those of a previously unrecognized species here described as Carcharhinus leiodon n.sp., are examined and compared with those of Carcharhinus Blainville. Features studied include morphometrics, vertebral numbers and other vertebral characteristics, tooth numbers, color pattern, and some other aspects of external morphology. It is concluded that on these features C. Leiodon n.sp. is entirely encompassed within the parameters of Carcharhinus, and that, although A. isodon, H. hemiodon, H. macloti, and H. signatus each extend the range of diversity of Carcharhinus in one or more features, A. isodon is not uniquely different from Carcharhinus, and there is no common pattern of difference between the three species of Hypoprion and Carcharhinus. Accordingly, and because the nature of the teeth of Aprionodon and Hypoprion has been found insufficient to warrant generic distinction from Carcharhinus, the genera Aprionodon and Hypoprion are synonymised with Carcharhinus. A diagnosis and description are given for each of the above species. The descriptions include measurements, counts, and line illustrations that show the whole shark in lateral view, underside of head, nostril, and teeth. The geographic distribution is summarized, as are also the meager biological data available on number of embryos, size at birth, size at sexual maturity, and maximum size.
