Despite traditional understanding, almost no inter-gyre flux occurs if no-slip boundary conditions are used. The inter-gyre eddy flux is in control only with exactly symmetric gyres and free slip boundaries. Even without the inter-gyre flux, the multiple-gyre circulation is weak because of sinuous instabilities on the jet which are not present in the single-gyre model. These modes efficiently flux vorticity to the boundary and reduce the circulation without an inter-gyre flux, postponing inertial domination to much smaller viscosities.

A typical mid ocean horizontal scale is 100 km and a time scale is 100 days: these meso scale eddies have swirl speeds of order 10 cm s -1 which are usually con siderably greater than the long-term average flow. Many types of eddies with somewhat different scales and characteristics have been identified. The existence of such eddies was suspected by navigators more than a century ago and confirmed by the world of C. O'D. Iselin and V. B. Stock man in the 1930's. Measurements from RIV Aries in 1959/60, using the then newly developed neutrally buoyant floats, indicated the main char acteristics of the eddies in the deep ocean of the NW Atlantic while a se ries of Soviet moored current-meter arrays culminated, in POLYGON- 1970, in the explicit mapping of an energetic anticyclonic eddy in the tropical NE Atlantic. In 1973 a large collaborative (mainly U. S. , U. K. ) program, MODE-I, produced synoptic charts for an area of the NW At lantic and confirmed the existence of an open ocean eddy field and es tablished its characteristics. Meso-scale eddies are now known to be of interest and importance to marine chemists and biologists as well as to physical oceanographers and meteorologists.

While this transport plays an important role in the climate system, especially in the Southern Ocean, we lack a, comprehensive understanding of what sets mixing rates. This thesis seeks to advance this understanding through three related studies. First, mixing rates are diagnosed from an eddy-resolving state estimate of the Southern Ocean, revealing a meridional cross-section of effective diffusivity shaped by the interplay between eddy propagation and mean flow. Effective diffusivity diagnostics are then applied to quantify surface mixing rates globally, using a, kinematic model with velocities derived from satellite observations; the diagnosed mixing rates show a rich spatial structure, with especially strong mixing in the tropics and western-boundary-current regions. Finally, an idealized numerical model of the Southern Ocean is analyzed, focusing on the response to changes in win(stress. The sensitivity of the meridional overturning circulation to the wind changes demonstrates the importance of properly capturing eddy mixing rates for large-scale climate problems.

Book excerpt: This work seeks to further understand the climatic role of mesoscale eddies, which are long-lived ocean vortices that span up to hundreds of kilometers. They are already known to be involved in the transport and redistribution of salt, heat, and nutrients throughout the ocean. However, precisely determining their involvement has proven to be a challenge, as the mechanics of eddies are only partly understood; a standard definition for mesoscale eddies does not exist and, therefore, scientifically meaningful, robust methods for eddy extraction, characterization, tracking and visualization remain a challenge. To address these challenges, this work begins by developing a new method for extracting vortices from geophysical flow data, based on a reference model describing the expected physics and geometry of an idealized vortex. Additionally, a method for tracking eddies through the ocean over time is described. Using these mechanisms, a global descriptive census of eddies is carried out. The census data allow the eddy behavior of both the model and extraction technique to be compared against observational work by others. This census also builds on previous work, by providing a global view of the depth-dependent behavior of mesoscale eddies. Finally, two studies were carried out covering the functional behavior of eddies. In the first, eddies were seeded with a passive tracer, which was allowed to be advected and diffused by the simulation itself. The changes in passive tracer concentration were then studied to derive the characteristic time and length scales on which eddies can transport water. In the second, active tracer transport was decomposed, allowing eddy leakage to be quantified, both instantaneously and in aggregate. This work contributes, on the one hand, to the understanding of the role of mesoscale eddies in the ocean, particularly concerning the scales on which they operate, and on the other, to the problems of identification, extraction, tracking, and visual characterization of vortices in any geophysical flow. The eddy leakage metric in particular could be further developed, either to visualizing vortex characteristics in other domains, or to further quantification of leakage effects with the new metric as a baseline.

For several decades, forecasts with lead times of a few days for weather and other environmental phenomena have yielded valuable information to improve decision-making across all sectors of society. Developing the capability to forecast environmental conditions and disruptive events several weeks and months in advance could dramatically increase the value and benefit of environmental predictions, saving lives, protecting property, increasing economic vitality, protecting the environment, and informing policy choices. Over the past decade, the ability to forecast weather and climate conditions on subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescales, i.e., two to fifty-two weeks in advance, has improved substantially. Although significant progress has been made, much work remains to make S2S predictions skillful enough, as well as optimally tailored and communicated, to enable widespread use. Next Generation Earth System Predictions presents a ten-year U.S. research agenda that increases the nation's S2S research and modeling capability, advances S2S forecasting, and aids in decision making at medium and extended lead times.
