Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem and the Catholic School One of the outstanding problems in American rural life today is to be found in the decline of the rural church. Surveys conducted in recent years point to this defect as one of the cancers that are eating the Vitals out of American public life. Religion must enter into the hearts of the people or evil looms up for the future. It is, indeed, only too true that the country church, both in Catholic and non-catholic circles, is not fulfilling the mission for which it was intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Schoolhouses and Grounds In 1911 the National Council of Education appointed a committee on health problems in education. From the time of its appointment this committee has worked in cooperation with a special committee of the American Medical Association, and the fund available for the work of these health committees has consisted of small appropriations from the National Education Association and an equal amount appropriated each year by the American Medical Association. At the meeting of the department of superintendence of the National Education Association, held in St. Louis in February, 1912, a general report on health problems in the schools of the United States was presented and discussed. At the meeting of the National Education Association in Chicago, July, 1912, the topic Sanitation of Rural Schools was selected for the two committees mentioned for their special study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School Much has been written of late concerning the Rural School Problem. All students of country life seem to agree that a radical readjustment of the entire rural educational and social system, to fit modern conditions, is imperative; but while a few of the leaders have hewn close to the vital spot, none so far have gone straight to the heart of the subject. The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet - they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. The one-room school must go. It cannot provide the education to which country boys and girls are entitled and which the welfare of the country demands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Ideals in Rural Schools IN presenting a second monograph on the rural school problem in this series we register our sense of the importance of rural education. Too long have the rural schools suffered from neg lect. Both the local communities and the State have overlooked the needs of the rural school system. At the present hour there is an earnest awakening of interest in rural life and its insti tutions. Already there is a small but certain movement of people toward the country and the vocation of agriculture. A period of agricultu ral prosperity, the reaction of men and women against the artificialities of city life, the devel 0pment of farming through the application of science, and numerous other factors have made country life more congenial and have focused attention upon its further needs. It is natural, therefore, that the rural school should receive an increased share of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It would be unkind and untrue to say that this effort has not always been made by intelligent men and women, but it would not be at variance with truth to say that many who have written in behalf of the rural schools have been those who had little first hand experience with the subject which they set out to improve. With the belief that a rural school education and nearly a quarter of a century spent in teaching in and adjacent to the rural schools may be a partial preparation for so great an undertaking as rural school improvement, the author offers this work, "The Rural School from Within." Several of the chapters are devoted to actual experiences which are believed to be typical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Isolated reports, surveys, and single chapters fail to do justice to the theme and fail also in acquainting many people with this type of solution of the great rural-school problem. We greatly need a first-class, thoroughgoing book, based on investigation, nation-wide acquaintance with this type of school, and thor oughly and cautiously worked out and illustrated. Such a volume few busy educators have time to produce. Feeling the need, however, the editor has done his best in producing such a volume by the method of co-operation of specialists found successful in other volumes of this series. We do not hesitate to pioneer and open up the way for more thorough going works in the future. Our purpose is practical, directed to immediate and wide publicity of a very worthy hypothesis for the solution of a very grave problem, how to secure better rural education in this democracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School, 1922: Survey, of New York State Educational Achievement It is one thing to provide in a school curriculum the necessary means for training children along the lines which society desires. Experience shows that schools often, while making all the necessary formal provisions for such training, fail to achieve the type of finished product desired and intended. It was the function of the Division of Tests and Measurements in the New York survey to make definite inquiry regarding this finished product of the rural schools of the state. It faced not so much the problem of what the schools should teach, as the problem of how well do the schools teach the things which all admit are included in its legitimate teach ing program. /how well do the pupils in these schools learn the things which by common agreement they should learn? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States.
