Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management and Methods for Rural and Village Teachers Teachers in rural and village schools have problems of their own. They often have all grades to teach, and many times have a crowded room with few facilities for teaching. Most books on School Management and on Methods of Teaching have been written from the view point of the model school or the city system, and contain much that is impractical in the rural or the village school where ideal conditions do not exist. Management and Methods was written to help rural and village teachers. It embraces nine years' experience in these schools, corrected and modified by several years of deeper study and broader experience. It will, we believe, be found at all times pleading for good common sense in the school room, and for work and study and planning on the part of the teacher. The suggestions will be found helpful, we trust, to teachers, both old and young; and if they are, the author will be satisfied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Supervision Sir: In the early history of this country, and of each of the States, when the population was sparse and communities widely separated, each school district and each school had an independent existence, with little or no relation to any other school or district or any larger unit. As population became more dense, as communities coalesced, as appropriations and expenditures for schools became larger, and as the larger units of county and State began to feel an interest in and responsibility for the education of the children of all their separate communities, the need for State and county officers for business administration was felt. Later still, the demand for efficiency in the schools and for the best possible use of money expended for schools and of the time of the children in school gave rise to a demand for expert supervision by men and women competent to give to all teachers, and especially to young and inexperienced teachers, help in those phases of their work in which they need it most. As a result, State, county, district, and township superintendents are now chosen with reference to their knowledge of teaching more than formerly; and in many States they are given the assistance of special supervisors. So valuable have been the results of the work of these expert supervisors in those places where it has been tried under favorable conditions that there is now a general desire for information on the subject. I therefore recommend for publication as a bulletin of the Bureau of Education the accompanying manuscript transmitted herewith on Rural School Supervision, prepared at my request by Katherine M. Cook and A. C. Monahan of the Rural Education Division of this bureau. Respectfully submitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of School and Class Management: Theory and Practice The publication of a book on school and class manage ment hardly requires excuses. For education is still in the age of lean kine, ' and management is one of the leanest. Recent books which have appeared show the inadequacy of the older treatments, and a complete text-book is still lacking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management of a City School Prior to 1908 there was no book on School Management that treated specifically the administration of a city school; there were, in fact, very few books that even distinguished between school management and class management. In that year the author's The Management of a City School was published, the first volume to deal exclusively with the specific problems confronting the principal of a city school. The gracious reception accorded the book has prompted the author, at the end of a decade, to undertake a complete revision. The plan of organization of the original edition has been retained; but the text has been liberally reapportioned and supplemented, the citations brought to date, and bold-faced topical headings introduced. It is hoped that the book may continue to interest those charged with the responsibility of managing schools, those preparing themselves for administrative positions, and the teaching profession generally, and that, in its new form, it may render an increasingly helpful service.
