Book excerpt: It's happened. The Rosebud Girls have their dream lodge. But what happens after dreams become realities? The last thing Callie has room for in her life is a new relationship. Between the lodge remodel, being the glue that keeps her beloved Rosebud Girls together, and her real estate firm, her hands are more than full. But that doesn't keep Callie from wishing she had one. So when a drop dead handsome contractor is placed in her path, what's a woman to do? Saffron has very few enemies. In fact, up until her legal woes with her previous partners she would say she only had one enemy. An arch-nemesis if you will. But that doesn't matter much because Alex is a person of her past. Until she walks into her brand-new kitchen at the lodge and who's standing there? Alex. Kenzie was sure the worst of her woes were behind her. Bryan is relatively healthy and now she's got a job where she not only works way fewer hours, she also gets to work with her friends. Life is looking up. Until what she thought was a small fight she had with Bryan turns out to be much more. His time he spent in the city cooling off goes from one night to a week to even longer. And Kenzie realizes that if she wants to keep her marriage she's going to have to fight. Hazel went on one date with Dylan. It was all she promised him and it was all she is planning on giving. He's too...well, incredible if she's honest with herself. And she doesn't need an incredible man in her life. She needs to focus on her children and her new job. She just barely got out of a twenty-year marriage for heaven's sake. But when Dylan is relentless and Hazel doesn't have much of an excuse for saying no to him other than he's too good to be true? It looks like a second date is in their future. And maybe even a third and fourth. Will Hazel let go and enjoy, or will her fears get in the way of something that could really be great? Laurel swears that hamsters make more progress in their lives than she does with hers. She's still staying at Callie's house, reliant on her for nearly everything. She's still worried about her future. And she still has no idea what to do about her past. But when it all catches up to her, Laurel has some decisions to make. Will she stand by her husband as he goes on trial for his crimes? Will she try to save her marriage? Life has a way of getting even the best of us down and the Rosebud Girls are no exception. Join them as they work through their challenges and come out even stronger than before. Because although they've never had it easy, they'll always have one another. The Lodge, the beautiful Rosebud Lodge that Callie and her friends have dreamed and worked for so long, is finally open for business. But for some reason their guests keep cancelling-before they even show up. At first Callie thinks she must be doing something wrong, but as she digs, she realizes that something, or more likely someone, is working hard to keep the girls from reaching success. She has to figure it out before the Lodge closes for good. But she also needs to figure out what role Leo and his deepening friendship plays in her life. Laurel can't help but feel that it's her fault the Lodge is verging on failure. None of the other girls have enemies like hers. Or at least like her ex's. But the girls won't let her walk away, so Laurel is determined to make things right, no matter what it takes. Or what old memories it dredges up. It should have been just a routine visit to the doctor. Instead, Hazel gets news that upends her life. The big C word. She feels terrified and alone, but there is no way she is making Dylan endure this journey with her, so she does her best to push him away. But Dylan isn't going anywhere and Hazel might finally be ready to let down her guard. Until her ex unexpectedly walks back into her life, the epitome of everything she wished he would have been during their marriage. The girls love to tease Hazel about the two men vying for her attention, but a real life love triangle is a lot messier than she would have ever imagined. Things are looking up for Kenzie. She and Bryan are making strides toward a restored, healthier marriage-the kind that will make them both happy. But their goal is still a ways off, so Bryan is staying in the city for now. Meanwhile, Kenzie's sister Raquel decides it's time to move home . . . into Kenzie's spare bedroom. As much as Kenzie loves her sister, they haven't lived together in decades. They can't even get through a conversation without disagreeing. How is this going to work? But ultimately the logistics don't matter. When it comes down to it, Kenzie will always help her sister. Hopefully she can work on this relationship without losing the progress she's made with Bryan. As if having a bit of a crush on her sous chef and ex arch nemesis, Alex, isn't messy enough, now Saffron has befriended Alex's mother. So not only does she get to see his disinterest toward her at work, but she also gets to watch him come home from dates with other women. She's an idiot. But even as Saffron is berating herself for being the kind of woman she never wanted to be, a lovesick fool, she can't help her feelings. And maybe it's just her dumb, hopeful heart, but she could swear Alex is a little more into her than he lets on. Isn't he? The Rosebud girls are clinging to their sanity as they ride the treacherous ups and downs of life. But through the struggles, disappointments, fears, and Hazel's battle for her very life, they know they aren't going through it alone. Because they have each other. Book excerpt: This poetry book is a huge collaboration and a living work with incredible women from all over the world meant to encourage and inspire anyone who reads it- to just- NOT GIVE UP. For this women empowerment project, I reached out to women who I thought were inspiring and asked them to submit a photo of themselves and a story about something traumatic they have overcome in their lifetime. I used their photo for the book and I turned their story into the inspiration behind the poem written next to their photo. I hope that with each poem I can inspire the women they are written for, and so many more women who might be going through something similar. You see, I always felt like I was a victim growing up. I had a really hard childhood and I had to learn to grow up early. My mother abandoned us, my father did his best but lived pay check to pay check and I just always felt so sorry for myself. One day my Bub (grandmother), sat me down and explained to me that everyone has their own story. She really broke it down to me and told me that everyone has things that they go through and grow through in their lives in order to become the person that they are meant to be. She taught me empathy. To instill it, she decided to take me to the library to read some really inspiring stories so that I didn't feel so alone. The first book I took out was a book about the life of Maya Angelou. Her story inspired me to start writing and truly helped me to become the strong person I am today. Quotes, poetry, and lyrics have always carried me through my darkest days and I do hope that with this book, we can inspire you to become a survivor instead of a victim like my Grandmother and Maya Angelou did for me. Visit us online at GirlDontGiveUp.com to submit a photo of yourself and your story to be featured in an upcoming edition of this living work.

She wasn't sure this day would ever come, but she's endured the worst of it-she hopes. She's heading home with her support system: her beautiful sons, her parents, her best friends, and two very handsome men who both seem to want the same thing. Hazel. The war with cancer is nearly over but it looks like the battle for her heart is just beginning. Laurel is well on her way to compensating those who have been hurt by her ex-husband, Bennie's, crimes. With the help of her handsome attorney, Riley, Laurel has raised enough money for one young woman to go to her dream college, along with paying off some of Bennie's other numerous debts. Her life feels like it's back on track. Mostly. At least it's moving forward, even if Laurel is still strapped for cash and living in a sketchy apartment. But she has the best friends in the world who are trying to help her regain her footing and then there's Riley . . . who's just a friend. Right? Saffron is finally heading her very own kitchen. As every professional dream comes true, she can't help noticing that her personal life is not so dreamy. But what-or rather, who-Saffron wants she can't have. Because he works for her. And now he has a girlfriend. And it's just messy. So Saffron is convinced that keeping her distance is the right move. Kenzie and Bryan are finally in a good place. They've fought for their marriage. And won! But now something may be wrong. Kenzie expected Bryan to move back in, but he seems to be dragging his feet. Does he really want to be with her? Callie has her dream man, she's running two thriving businesses, and her friends are all happy. Life can't get much better . . . until Leo drops a bomb Callie isn't sure she can recover from. Is there any possibility of moving forward if Leo and Callie's future plans take them on completely different paths? Can their relationship survive when Leo won't let Callie fully into his life? The girls are back and stronger than ever. Join them as they navigate the ups and downs of life, family, and love while working together at their beloved Lodge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling memoir of a Native American woman’s struggles and the life she found in activism: “courageous, impassioned, poetic and inspirational” (Publishers Weekly). Mary Brave Bird grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota in a one-room cabin without running water or electricity. With her white father gone, she was left to endure “half-breed” status amid the violence, machismo, and aimless drinking of life on the reservation. Rebelling against all this—as well as a punishing Catholic missionary school—she became a teenage runaway. Mary was eighteen and pregnant when the rebellion at Wounded Knee happened in 1973. Inspired to take action, she joined the American Indian Movement to fight for the rights of her people. Later, she married Leonard Crow Dog, the AIM’s chief medicine man, who revived the sacred but outlawed Ghost Dance. Originally published in 1990, Lakota Woman was a national bestseller and winner of the American Book Award. It is a story of determination against all odds, of the cruelties perpetuated against American Indians, and of the Native American struggle for rights. Working with Richard Erdoes, one of the twentieth century’s leading writers on Native American affairs, Brave Bird recounts her difficult upbringing and the path of her fascinating life.

Book excerpt: Transplanted from what he considered civilization to the desolation of the Rosebud Indian Reservation, a ten-year-old boy becomes resourceful. What he learns will shape the ways in which he eventually would teach. Rather than stunting development, the reservation's history, culture and education become the stimuli for it. The boy immerses himself in the peaceful Lakota culture, reacts against its developing militancy, and eventually learns acceptance. Accustomed to team sports and ice cream shops, the fifth-grader relocates with his family to the reservation in 1957 and finds nothing familiar. He and his friends live in the poorest region of South Dakota; their only resources are their imaginations and curiosity. They explore, build, hunt, and become interested in girls. This is their story of Survival on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. It's easy for a kid to poke fun at foods and traditions different from his own. The author notes, The more experiences I had with the Lakota culture, the more respect I developed for it. I reached a point at which it was difficult to view the Lakota objectively. I'd become part of them.About the Author: David Clifford Grieser is an educator in Des Moines, Iowa. Michelangelo once described his sculpting as freeing his subjects from the marble in which they were encased. I felt the same way as I wrote: My subjects and events were encased in a past, and I wanted to eliminate the extraneous surroundings, so that readers could see them. The obstacles, then, were to extract no more or less than what I needed to be accurate. Completing the book was a testament to the Lakota people to whom I owed so much. Book excerpt: Spanning eight decades and chronicling the wild ride of a Greek-American family through the vicissitudes of the twentieth century, Jeffrey Eugenides’ witty, exuberant novel on one level tells a traditional story about three generations of a fantastic, absurd, lovable immigrant family -- blessed and cursed with generous doses of tragedy and high comedy. But there’s a provocative twist. Cal, the narrator -- also Callie -- is a hermaphrodite. And the explanation for this takes us spooling back in time, through a breathtaking review of the twentieth century, to 1922, when the Turks sacked Smyrna and Callie’s grandparents fled for their lives. Back to a tiny village in Asia Minor where two lovers, and one rare genetic mutation, set our narrator’s life in motion. Middlesex is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire. It’s a brilliant exploration of divided people, divided families, divided cities and nations -- the connected halves that make up ourselves and our world.
