Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Desert Plants to Soil Moisture and to Evaporation Every observer of desert vegetation has had his attention drawn to the question of how certain plants of the arid regions are able to main tain a more or less active transpiration during long periods of absolute lack of precipitation, when the soil in which they are rooted becomes not only apparently air-dry but also attains exceedingly high tempera tures. It seemed that careful quantitative studies of the moisture con ditions in desert soil and desert atmosphere, and of the relation of these conditions to the transpiration and life of desert plants, might throw considerable light not only upon this problem of extreme xerophytism, but also upon the limitations of plant life in general. Just as the alpine summits of high mountains in all parts of the earth and the frozen tundras of the arctic regions exhibit vegetable life under temperature conditions which almost render it impossible, so the arid desert with its centimeters of annual rainfall and its meters of annual evaporation exhibits plant life under conditions of extreme dryness which similarly approach a limit to the very existence of such life. It is thus plausible to suppose that certain fundamental truths regarding the vital activities of plants may be more advantageously studied in the case of organisms existing under these extreme conditions than by confining attention to what are considered the more normal circumstances of life and growth. With the aid of a grant from the Carnegie Institution of Washington the writer was able to spend the summer of 1904 at the Desert Botanical Laboratory of that Institution at Tucson, Arizona, in carrying out a series of quantitative studies on desert plants. The results of these studies are embodied in the present paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deserts appear very fascinating during our short visits. However, the lives of plants and animals are very dif?cult under the harsh climatic conditions of high tempe- ture and scant water supply in deserts, sometimes associated with high concent- tions of salt. The editor of this book was born and brought up in the Great Indian Desert, and has spent much of his life studying the growth and metabolism of desert plants. It is very charming on a cool summer evening to sit at the top of a sand dune listening only to blowing air and nothing else. It has been my dream to prepare a volume on desert plants encompassing various aspects of desert plant biology. In this book, I have tried to present functional and useful aspects of the vegetation resources of deserts along with scienti?c input aimed at understanding and impr- ing the utility of these plants. The scant vegetation of deserts supports animal life and provides many useful medicines, timber and fuel wood for humans. Therefore, there are chapters devoted to medicinal plants (Chap. 1), halophytes (Chaps. 13, 14), and fruit plants (Chaps. 17, 20). Desert plants have a unique reproductive biology (Chaps. 9–11), well-adapted eco-physiological and anatomical charact- istics (Chap. 7), and specialised metabolism and survival abilities. These plants are dif?cult to propagate and pose many problems to researchers developing biote- nological approaches for their amelioration (Chaps. 18–20).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Desert Corn Flea-Beetle In destroying its food plant, this beetle works from both ends, as it were, the adults attacking the plant above the ground and the larvae below the ground. The adults eat out the chlorophyll of the leaves, and when sufficiently numerous they cause the leaves to wilt. If feeding is long continued, new growing plants will be killed. AS the eggs are deposited below the surface of the ground, the larvae immediately begin feeding. Upon the roots, and soon the plant has quite a shallow root system that will not support it in a thrifty manner. The roots, after having been injured by the larvae, attempt to overcome this injury by sending out new laterals, as illustrated in figure 6, page 11, and then sometimes Slight windstorms will cause plants to blow over and lodge badly, thus further reducing the yield. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Habits of California Plants The subject matter of this book appeared first as a series of papers on California Wild Flowers on the Children's Page of the San Francisco Chronicle. Upon publication, requests came from school teachers in different parts of the state to issue the series in book form. This is the excuse for the book's existence. The plants are introduced through their blossoms, because the flower is the part that appeals to the child, except in the case of trees: but it is hoped that the suggestions as to the habits of the roots, steins, and leaves will be emphasized by the teacher. When the child gains the feeling that each plant is really an individual, with its own peculiar way of doing its life work, the whole out-of-door world becomes a larger, more wonderful realm. The habits of plants was first suggested to the writer by Miss Alice Eastwood, Botanist of the California Academy of Science, in a class connected with her department. To her is due much that is of value in the work. My mother suggested the writing of the papers for the Chronicle and collected many of the specimens for the illustrations. Professor W. A. Setchell and Professor W. L. Jepson of the Department of Botany of the University of California rendered assistance in the study of trees. Professor Jepson loaned some of his photographs and Mr. H. M. Hall, also of the Department of Botany, University of California, secured specimens for the photographs. Glandulosa. - The thin upper internodes revolve, moving against the course of the sun, precisely like those of a true twiner, at an average rate, judging from three revolutions, of 3 h. 48 m. The leading shoot immediately twined round a stick placed near it; but, after making an Open spire of only one turn and a half, it ascended for a short space straight, and then reversed its spire and wound two turns in an Opposite course. This was rendered possible by the straight piece between the opposed spires having become rigid. The simple, broad, ovate leaves of this tropical species, so unlike those of most of the other species of the genus, with their short thick petioles, seem but ill fitted for any movement. Whilst twining up a vertical stick, no use is made of them. Nevertheless, if the footstalk of a young leaf be rubbed with a thin twig a few times on any side, it will in the course of a few hours bend to that side; afterwards it becomes straight again. The under side seemed to be the most sensitive; but the sensitiveness or irritability is but slight com pared to that which we shall meet Fig. 1. With in some of the following spe cies; for a loop of string, weighing 164 grain, hanging for some days on a young footstalk, produced a scarcely perceptible effect. A sketch is here given of two young leaves which had naturally caught two twigs on each side of the stem. Book excerpt: Advances in Ecological Research was first published in 1962 and has become one of Academic Press' most prestigious and successful series. In 1999 the Institute for Scientific Information released figures indicating this serial has an impact factor of 9.6 and a half-life of 10.0 years, ranking it first in the highly competitive category of Ecology. This volume continues to publish topical and important reviews, and interprets ecology to include all material that contributes to our understanding of the field. Advances in Ecological Research presents a wide range of papers on all aspects of ecology. Topics include the physiology, populations, and communities of plants and animals, as well as landscape and ecosystem ecology
