Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 18, , language: English, abstract: Spirituality manifests itself in three main ways. Employees who practice individual spirituality may believe that their company is trustworthy and that they are connected to one another on the job. Workplace spirituality at the organizational level inspires everyone in the organization to strive for excellence as well as individuality. They address both the societal level, which is related to social issues and poor environmental conditions brought on by rapid industrial growth, and the individual level by providing an environment where people get along, enjoy what they do, and have personal goals and beliefs that are in line with the organization's mission. The ethical and social responsibility aspects of workplace spirituality will be discussed in this book. The concept of workplace spirituality refers to the idea that employees can bring their spiritual or religious values and beliefs into the workplace. This can have several ethical and social responsibility implications for organizations, including respect for diversity: Encouraging workplace spirituality can help organizations to respect the diverse beliefs and values of their employees. However, organizations need to ensure that they do not discriminate against employees who do not share the same spiritual or religious beliefs. Workplace spirituality can encourage employees to be more socially responsible and to make decisions that benefit society as a whole. However, organizations need to ensure that they do not use spirituality as a way to avoid their responsibilities to society or to promote their own interests at the expense of others. To guide the practice of CSR some principles are necessary: Stakeholder principe: businesses have a responsibility not only to their shareholders, but also to a wider range of stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, and the local community. All businesses should prioritize the interests of all stakeholders and not just the financial interests of shareholders. Triple bottom line principle: businesses should focus on not just financial performance, but also social and environmental performance. The triple bottom line framework includes measuring a company's success based on its economic, social, and environmental impact.

Recently, the tide has begun to turn and there is a growing openness to cite spirituality in academic analysis and debate, and when considering issues of practical concern to those engaged in the actual business of management. This provocative book brings together a range of leading thinkers to consider the relationship between spirituality and corporate social responsibility. The book's contributors examine spirituality as an inherent dimension of corporate life even if it is only known through its absence - and through the negative consequences of this absence on people and the planet. With contributors from four continents, David Bubna-Litic has assembled a range of fascinating perspectives having their origins in traditions that include Christianity, Process Theology, Hinduism, Contemporary Buddhism, Deep Ecology, Humanism, Post-Modern and Post-Romantic Spirituality. Spirituality and Corporate Social Responsibility is a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in ways in which spirituality relates to what is or what should be driving businesses and organizations to more responsible behaviour.

Mercy in Action explores Pope Francis’s efforts to renewCatholic social teaching—the guidance the church offers on matters that pertain to social justice in the world. The book examines what Pope Francis has said, done, and written on six critical social issues today—economic inequality, worker justice, preserving the environment, healthy family life, the plight of refugees, and peacemaking. The book also highlights both continuity and change in Catholic social teaching. Author Thomas Massaro illustrates how on each social issue—from expressing solidarity with unemployed workers to writing an encyclical addressing environmental degradation and climate change—Pope Francis has worked to update the church’s message of social justice and mercy.

Book excerpt: Although the concept of spirituality in the workplace has received enormous attention from contemporary researchers, very little or not sufficient research has been attempted from the religious perspective. This conceptual paper attempts to enrich the understanding of the spirituality in the workplace phenomenon from an Islamic Management perspective. In doing so, the conceptual paper attempts to study the theoretical and practical meanings of Taqwa, the characteristics of Taqwa, the two dimensions of Taqwa known as the Islamic spirituality and Islamic social responsibility, together with the mediating effect of “sabr” i.e. patience. The two dimensions of Taqwa are hypothesised to have direct positive effects on job satisfaction whiles patience has a mediating effect on overall job satisfaction. The literature used for this study is exclusively from the Qur'an and the Prophetic Tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Implications for future research were provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to examine sustainability and spirituality philosophically with ethics as the balancing force. The goal is to reveal the important intersection between sustainability and spirituality by using spirituality as the invisible guiding hand in the quest for sustainability. The editors and contributors examine old social and economics dilemmas from a new perspective in order to provide alternative approaches to economic and social development. The enclosed contributions cover a broad range of topics such as sustainable development and human happiness, contemporary spirituality, environmental ethics and responsibility, and corporate social responsibility. In addition, the title features real-world case studies and discussion questions that inspire self-reflection and theoretical and empirical deliberation in academic courses and business seminars. Contemporary approaches to economic and social development have failed to address humankind's abiding need for spiritual growth. For material development to be sustainable, spiritual advancement must be seen as an integral part of the human development algorithm. While the policy makers and governments can play their respective role, each one of us has to consciously adopt spirituality and sustainability as a way of life. This book will rely on the spiritual power of individuals to heal themselves and the environment. Featuring interdisciplinary perspectives in areas such as science, marine biology, environmental policy, cultural studies, psychology, philosophy, ecological economics, and ethics, this book will provide extensive insights into the complimentary fields of spirituality, sustainability and ethics.

Book excerpt: Maximizing the Triple Bottom Line through Spiritual Leadership draws on the emerging fields of workplace spirituality and spiritual leadership to teach leaders and their constituencies how to develop business models that address issues of ethical leadership, employee well-being, sustainability, and social responsibility without sacrificing profitability, growth, and other metrics of performance excellence. While this text identifies and discusses the characteristics necessary to be a leader, its major focus is on leadership—engaging stakeholders and enabling groups of people to work together in the most meaningful ways. The authors offer real-world examples of for-profit and non-profit organizations that have spiritual leaders and which have implemented organizational spiritual leadership. These cases are based on over ten years of research, supported by the International Institute of Spiritual Leadership, that demonstrates the value of the Spiritual Leadership Balanced Scorecard Business Model presented in the book. "Pracademic" in its orientation, the book presents a general process and tools for implementing the model.

Book excerpt: "Volume 1: This volume is the culmination of many discussions among the editors over the years, especially at the Sustainability, Ethics and Entrepreneurship (SEE) Conference, related to the growth and institutionalization of environmental and social entrepreneurship. Research on these two forms of entrepreneurial action has tried to keep pace with what is occurring in the field. While the research is diverse, attracting scholars across many disciplines and from all parts of the world, it is still in the formative stages. This volume seeks to take stock of the literature and report the state of the art in environmental and social entrepreneurship. In particular, it seeks to explore new theoretical directions that blend traditional notions of economic efficiency and social welfare and new ways of measuring and empirically testing these phenomena. The chapters in this volume demonstrate the diverse philosophical, methodological, and theoretical techniques to studying these forms of entrepreneurship. We expect this volume will contribute to this burgeoning research and that researchers will engage in theory development for the foreseeable future, as new business models are developed, tested, abandoned, and evolved. Volume 2: This volume spotlights cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and provocative thinking by organizational scholars and leaders committed to advancing the global sustainability agenda. Each chapter focuses on advancing one or more United Nations (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The chapter sequence follows a general logic of SDG numerical order and breadth. Overall, this compendium provides critical insights, practical strategies and tools, and timely inspiration to motivate individual and collective engagement with and achievement of the SDGs. With a decade remaining to achieve the 2030 Agenda, this volume supports sustainable development globally, through: identification of key challenges; theoretical, empirical, and practical exploration of potential solutions; and sharing of actionable findings. Each chapter makes an impactful contribution by spotlighting opportunities for advancing best-in-class efforts toward the achievement of the SDGs. Chapters represent diverse scholarly perspectives and include a representative range of focal SDGs, organizational contexts, applications, and initiatives from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and spanning national borders. Volume 3: Historically religious institutions have been at the forefront of social change, yet religion and spirituality are rarely discussed in contemporary entrepreneurship research. We challenge this oversight and argue that by ignoring the fundamental principles that define an overwhelming majority of people all over the world, our scholarship risks being partial, incomplete and thus misleading. This volume presents a selection of entrepreneurship perspectives - studies, essays and analyses - that integrate religion and spirituality with social change. We have deliberately sought chapters that are edgy and novel, to give different nuances on this integration of religion and spirituality with entrepreneurship for social change"--
