This important public health question was identified by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) to be examined by the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.2. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, Dietary Fats and Seafood Subcommittee conducted a systematic review to answer this question with support from the Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review (NESR) team.3. The goal of this systematic review was to examine the following question: What is the relationship between seafood consumption during childhood and adolescence (up to 18 years of age) and risk of cardiovascular disease? CONCLUSION STATEMENT AND GRADE: 1. Insufficient evidence is currently available to accurately determine the relationship between seafood consumption during childhood and adolescence and risk of developing cardiovascular disease. (Grade: Grade not assignable) METHODS: 1. A literature search was conducted using four databases (i.e., PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and CINAHL) to identify articles that evaluated the intervention or exposure of seafood consumption during childhood and adolescence and the outcomes of cardiovascular disease. A manual search was conducted to identify articles that may not have been included in the electronic databases searched. Articles were screened by two NESR analysts independently for inclusion based on pre-determined criteria.2. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were conducted for each included study, and both were checked for accuracy. The Committee qualitatively synthesized the body of evidence to inform development of a conclusion statement, and graded the strength of evidence using pre-established criteria for risk of bias, consistency, directness, precision, and generalizability. SUMMARY OF THE EVIDENCE: 1. Four articles, two randomized controlled trials and two prospective cohort studies, met inclusion criteria for this systematic review.2. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee used the following seafood definition: marine animals that live in the sea and in freshwater lakes and rivers. Seafood includes fish (e.g., salmon, tuna, trout, and tilapia) and shellfish (e.g., shrimp, crab, and oysters).3. Few articles were identified that examined the relationship between seafood intake during childhood and adolescence and blood pressure, lipid levels, and cardiovascular-related mortality, and no articles examined the relationship with incidence of cardiovascular disease.4. Two of four included articles had serious methodological limitations that made interpretation of the results difficult.5. Evidence was insufficient and no conclusion could be drawn.

First: to review the literature on the effect of the intake of seafood during early life on neurodevelopment. Secondly: to evaluate the impact of maternal use of acetaminophen during pregnancy on the neuropsychological development of the offspring and to explore potential epigenetic mechanisms that could contribute to this effect. Third: to examine the relationship between the mental health of the mother and wheezing in the child. Main results: 1) Seafood intake appears to be beneficial for neurodevelopment. 2) Prenatal acetaminophen exposure was associated with a greater number of autism spectrum symptoms in males and to hyperactivity/impulsivity behaviors and changes in attention function in all children. 4) Exposure to acetaminophen during pregnancy was associated with a significant difference in the DNA methylation of a CpG site that corresponds to the OTOP3 gene. 5) Maternal distress at child ages 1-1.5 or 4-5 years could increase the risk of wheezing in the child, especially for wheezing types associated with a greater risk of asthma.

The notion that good nutrition is essential for adequate growth and sound physical wellbeing is very well established. Further, in recent years, there has been an overwhelming increase in research dedicated to better understanding how nutritional factors influence cognition and behaviour. For example, several studies have suggested that higher foetal exposure to omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins such as folate promotes neurodevelopment. B vitamins may also play a role in neurocognitive functioning in later life, with some suggestion that lower vitamin B levels are associated with increased risk of dementia (although randomised controlled trials investigating B vitamin supplementation as a cognitive enhancer in the elderly have provided inconclusive evidence as to the benefits of such therapy for dementia). In fact, the nutritional underpinnings of Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders of cognitive ageing is becoming a much researched topic. In addition, consumption of several other foods has been found to convey more acute cognitively enhancing effects. For example, ingestion of carbohydrates (e.g. glucose), caffeine, resveratrol and several ‘nutraceutical’ herbal extracts has been associated with short-term improvements in cognitive performance. Beyond specific micronutrients and macronutrients, the current literature seems to support anecdotal evidence that consumption of a balanced breakfast is crucial to various measures of school performance, including attention in the classroom. What is clear from this emerging literature is that the relationship between nutritional status and neurocognitive functioning at various stages of the lifespan is complex. An aim of this Research Topic is to bring together some recent empirical findings, reviews and commentaries of the literature to date and opinion pieces relating to future directions for this burgeoning field.

During the last trimester of gestation and for the first 18 months after birth, both DHA and ARA are preferentially deposited within the cerebral cortex at a rapid rate. The mode of action of these two fatty acids and their derivatives at different structural–functional roles, and their levels in the signaling pathways of the brain have been continuously studied. These fatty acids are also involved in various brain developmental processes; however, their mechanistic cross talks are not yet clearly known. Recent data suggest that there may be a need for a balanced proportion of ARA and DHA in infant formula due to their complementary benefits. This review describes the importance of ARA in addition to DHA to support optimal brain development and growth in an infant, and functional roles in the brain.
