Book excerpt: Organizational theorists have for over 50 years used the concept of organizational climate to study and describe the effects of environment on the attitudes and behaviors of individual members and subgroups within organizations. Within the school setting, researchers and practitioners have increasingly used the concept of organizational climate to evaluate school effectiveness, particularly in middle schools where school climate plays a central role in middle school strategies and philosophies. Though extensive research has examined the relationship between climate and leadership in business, industry, and government, relatively few studies have eyed the linkages between school climate and leadership within the school setting. The research that has been conducted in education has tended to focus exclusively on the influence of the school principal. Noticeably absent from the literature is any reference to the relationship between an assistant principal's attitudes and behaviors and school climate. This study responds to the need to examine the relationship between a middle school assistant principal's leadership and the organizational climate within a middle school. It is a qualitative case study that employs interviews, observations, and document and artifact reviews to investigate the effect that the attitudes and behaviors of a middle school assistant principal has on a school considered by its district leadership and county office of education to have a positive school climate. The study is conducted within the conceptual framework of four school climate indicators: order and discipline, trust, academic program, and facilities. Two research questions guide the study: (a) Did the evidence support the assumption that a positive climate exists in this school, and (b) if so, what assumptions and behaviors of the assistant principal appear to contribute to the establishment and maintenance of that climate? The findings of the study reveal that a positive climate exists at this school in all four school climate categories. The findings also indicate that the assistant principal's attitudes and behaviors have had a significant influence in the establishment and maintenance of this climate. His impact on the climate category of order and discipline is particularly profound. The evidence reveals that he maintains, with few exceptions, a high level of trust with all of his constituent groups and that this trust, in turn, forms the basis of his effective interpersonal relationships with individuals and subgroups within the school's community. There is no evidence that this assistant principal is involved with the school's academic program in any meaningful way except to provide a safe, orderly environment in which teaching and learning can take place. In the climate category of facilities, this assistant principal makes meaningful contributions to the maintenance and upkeep of the school, but does not have a primary role in this area of school climate. These findings form the basis for recommendations for middle school assistant principal policy and practice with regard to the establishment and maintenance of positive school climate within the middle school setting.

Book excerpt: Far too little attention has been paid to the role that assistant principals have in the development of high performing schools. Impact provides specific, practical, and replicable leadership strategies for today’s assistant principal. Impact describes how to build meaningful principal/assistant principal leadership teams. The opportunities that assistant principals have to be the instructional leader of the school and the voice of the faculty, and the principal; in other words, how to “lead from the middle” are examined. Impact is a practitioner’s guide for the assistant principal striving to be a school leader. Target audiences include teachers wishing to become assistant principals, current assistant principals looking to excel and lead careers of significance, colleges of education working with graduate students who are being trained in P-12 school administration, and sitting school principals looking to expand the often under-utilized, potential of the assistant principal. This book examines the art and science of the assistant principal as a school leader; as a leader who impacts the lives of teachers and students. Great assistant principals matter.

Book excerpt: ASCD bestseller! Baruti Kafele turns his attention to assistant principals in a book designed to spark reflection and clarify the influence of this often misunderstood role. You're an Assistant Principal. Whatever your status—the sole AP in your school, one of two or more APs in your school, a career AP, an AP aspiring to the principalship—yours is one of the most misunderstood and underutilized positions in education. Positioned between teachers and the principal, you are an instructional leader. However, you are not the leader of the school. Therefore, you must carefully navigate your way to ensure that you thrive in your role without "stepping on the toes" of your principal. In The Assistant Principal 50, award-winning, four-time principal Baruti Kafele presents reflective questions that encompass the breadth and depth of the assistant principalship—from finding your leadership "lane" to thriving and being an asset to your principal. Kafele infuses the book (which also includes guidance and insights for principals and aspiring assistant principals) from beginning to end with personal anecdotes and accounts of both failures and successes from his years as an assistant principal. He arms you with tools and insights that will drive you to view the assistant principalship as critical to the climate and culture of your school as well as to student achievement. You, assistant principal, play a critical role in your school's success. The questions that Kafele asks you to consider will aid you as you hone your leadership skills toward becoming an effective leader in your school.

Book excerpt: By detailing an explanatory sequential mixed methods study grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT), this book explores the role of effective educational leadership in developing multicultural acceptance in predominantly white schools. Drawing on the rich experiences and accounts of school principals in rural middle schools in the US, the volume asks how principals’ personal attitudes, professional experiences, and the degree to which they view themselves as a mentor and influencer within the school impacts their approach to improving multicultural understanding amongst students, staff, and faculty. The text is organized into five clear chapters, providing critical reflections, a review of the relevant literature, and in-depth discussion of first-hand data. Six key findings relating to whole-school acceptance, the role of individual principal’s attitudes, and support for teaching staff open new avenues for research and inform recommendations for the professional development of school principals. In presenting key theory and practical implications of research, this book will be crucial reading for researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the fields of educational leadership, multicultural education, sociology of education, and teacher education.
