Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renascence of the English Drama: Essays, Lectures, and Fragments; Relating to the Modern English Stage, Written and Delivered in the Years 1883-94 I can well understand and sympathise with the feelings of impatience and resentment which these essays and lectures have aroused in many quarters during the last ten years, and I have always known that there was much worldly wisdom in the advice of the many friends who have so constantly urged me to hold my tongue upon the subject of the drama. It is a shrewd instinct in the public mind which prompts it to suspect that in matters of art the same great law prevails which it so constantly finds true in matters of morals - namely, that talking and doing are in inverse proportion to each other. And no one is more firmly convinced than I of the stupendous uselessness and impertinence of all preaching and criticism that does not fall in with the growing tendencies of thought around it. Book Synopsis The Italian World of English Renaissance Drama by : A. J. Hoenselaars
Download or read book The Italian World of English Renaissance Drama written by A. J. Hoenselaars and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that English Renaissance drama owes its extraordinary richness and variety to the blending of elements originating from the medieval heritage and classical and Italian dramatic traditions. This grafting of the "Italian world" onto the English Renaissance goes far beyond the conventional research of the literary sources. The articles in this collection explore English Renaissance drama through new and challenging aspects of influence and through investigations into classical and Italian theater. The volume moves from early Elizabethan to late Jacobean drama. The area of research ranges from New Classical Comedy to commedia erudita, from the Renaissance theory of tragedy and tragicomedy to the birth of pastoral drama and beyond.

Book Synopsis A Short History of English Renaissance Drama by : Helen Hackett
Download or read book A Short History of English Renaissance Drama written by Helen Hackett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare is a towering presence in English and indeed global culture. Yet considered alongside his contemporaries he was not an isolated phenomenon, but the product of a period of astonishing creative fertility. This was an age when new media - popular drama and print - were seized upon avidly and inventively by a generation of exceptionally talented writers. In her sparkling new book, Helen Hackett explores the historical contexts of English Renaissance drama by situating it in the wider history of ideas. She traces the origins of Renaissance theatre in communal religious drama, civic pageantry and court entertainment and vividly describes the playing conditions of Elizabethan and Jacobean playhouses. Examining Marlowe, Shakespeare and Jonson in turn, the author assesses the distinctive contribution made by each playwright to the creation of English drama. She then turns to revenge tragedy, with its gothic poetry of sex and death; city comedy, domestic tragedy and tragicomedy; and gender and drama, with female roles played by boy actors in commercial playhouses while women participated in drama at court and elsewhere. The book places Renaissance drama in the exciting and vibrant cosmopolitanism of sixteenth-century London.

Book Synopsis Female Mourning in Medieval and Renaissance English Drama by : Katharine Goodland
Download or read book Female Mourning in Medieval and Renaissance English Drama written by Katharine Goodland and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the plays of Shakespeare, Kyd, and Webster this book presents a new perspective on early modern drama grounded upon three original interrelated points. The author explores how the motif of the mourning woman on the early modern stage embodies the cultural trauma of the Reformation in England; brings to light the extent to which the figures of early modern drama recall those of the recent medieval past; and addresses how these representations embody actual mourning practices that were, after the Reformation, increasingly viewed as disturbing.
