Book excerpt: Interpersonal relationships are crucial to athletic performance. This parallel qualitative and quantitative multi-method study examines student-athlete relationships with coaches, teammates, community, and the sport itself. The central tenets of the interpersonal communication Social Exchange Theory (SET) state that when undergoing a decision regarding future behaviors and interpersonal relationships, people weigh the perceived costs and the perceived benefits in an equation (cost-benefit analysis) to analyze if the perceived benefits of behavior or relationship is worth the perceived costs. To analyze this in the context of non-scholarship high-contact athletes playing National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III football, I used a qualitative framework to explore the lived experiences of NCAA student-athletes. Cost-benefit analysis among non-scholarship football players indicates two stages of risk reassessment where football players consider quitting. Once they enter the third stage, athletes suggest nothing would prevent them from continuing their playing careers, suggesting that once the athlete gets past the second stage of risk reassessment, they have determined the costs of playing a high-contact sport with greater risk of injury are worth the friendships and "the Brotherhood" that is formed among the teammates. According to SET, in interpersonal relationships the key attribute that distinguishes relationships that continue and do not is trust. To explore trust in NCAA student-athlete/coach relationships, I employed a qualitative analysis using NCAA data set collected in 2010. The data indicates that, when controlling for gender, perceived ethics, individual-level communication, and willingness to share personal information are related to trust in a coach. This is vital information for coaches and administrators on the collegiate level, and for risk communicators working with athletes in a team environment. These parallel studies yield data that shows how high-contact sport athletes think about risk and relationships in the context of athletics, and the importance of trust between coaches and athletes which could potentially lead to higher success on and off the field.

More specifically, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993) was developed to assess the psychological benefits and risks associated with athletic identity. Much of the previous literature has examined these benefits and risks in Division I student-athletes. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and well-being in Division III student-athletes, a generally understudied population. An additional aim of the study was to determine if participation in non-athletic activities (campus involvement) positively impacted well-being in Division III student-athletes. The results indicated a significant relationship between athletic identity and well-being. Furthermore, the interaction of campus involvement, athletic identity, and well-being was determined to not be significant. Clinical implications, limitations and strengths to the study, and future directions are discussed. There is a paucity of research on this topic for the Division III student-athlete population as well as for research which evaluates positive psychological outcomes in collegiate student-athletes. This study aimed to fill the gap in the current literature on both counts. Quantitave methodology was used to assess 108 collegiate student-athletes from an NCAA mid- Atlantic Division III sport conference. The Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Vocational Identity Measure, and the Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving were used were used to evaluate the relationship of athletic identity, vocational, identity and thriving in this population. Data was analyzed using a stepwise regression model which yielded a moderate, significant, and positive relationship between vocational identity and thriving; removing athletic identity from the model all together. Past research also indicated that gender may play a role in student-athlete career maturity such that females tend to have more career maturity than males (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996); and have lower scores of depression and anxiety (Armstrong & Oomen-Early, 2009). Unlike past research, the current study found no significant gender differences across all variables. Book excerpt: There has been limited research that focuses on Division III college student athletes and the career development process. Although previous researchers have studied the relationship between athletic identity and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among college student athletes, results have been inconsistent, with different researchers finding inverse, positive, or no relationships between variables. In addition, numerous researchers have examined career development among college student athletes. However, there has been no research to date that studies professional development engagement (PDE) and college student athletes. In addition, the majority of career development studies involving college student athletes have focused on either Division I or II schools. To address this gap, the current research project utilized three variables (athletic identity, CDMSE, and PDE) to try to gain an understanding of factors that may impact the career development process for traditional age college students (College Student Non-Athletes; CSNA) and college student-athletes in a Division III school. Chickering’s Identity Development Theory was used as a lens to examine identity development among the populations of interest. The researcher conducted a quantitative study at an NCAA Division III university in the northeastern region of the United States to examine the relationship between PDE and CDMSE among college student athletes (research question 1). Furthermore, this research was designed to determine if the association between PDE and CDMSE changed when controlling for athletic identity (research question 2). Lastly, the author examined this same set of variables and controls (the association between PDE and CDMSE when controlling for athletic identity) to see if there was a significant difference between college student athletes vs. CNSAs (research question 3). NCAA Division III student athletes and CSNA completed an online survey consisting of three instruments (Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Career Decision Making Short-Form, and Professional Development Engagement Scale) and a demographic questionnaire. The results suggest that higher levels of PDE lead to higher level of CDMSE, and that higher levels of athletic identity were related to higher levels of CDMSE when controlling for PDE. Furthermore, in both the student athlete and the CNSA samples, there was no significant relationship difference in the association between PDE and CDMSE when accounting for athletic identity. Additionally, implications for research, practice, and teaching are discussed.

Book excerpt: Resilience in sport has been defined as "the role of mental processes and behavior in promoting personal assets and protecting an individual from the potential negative effect of stressors" (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2012, p. 675). Fletcher and Sarkar's (2012) found that various psychological factors were indicative of athlete resilience such as achievement motivation, social support, focus, confidence, and positive personality. To date, sport psychology researchers have dominantly examined resilience as an individual construct (e.g., Galli & Vealey, 2008; Fletcher & Sarkar; Wagstaff, Sarkar, Davidson, & Fletcher, 2016). However, it is also important to consider how athlete resilience might develop and operate in relationships with important others (e.g., coach). Narrative inquiry (Smith & Sparkes, 2009) was used in this study to explore the stories of seven NCAA Division I student-athletes' lived experiences of how the coach-athlete relationship influenced their ability to be resilient through major stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted that asked participants about their respective coach-athlete relationship, how power and sociocultural factors influenced this relationship, and in turn, influenced student-athlete resilience. Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used for data analysis, which revealed the following themes: (a) Student-athlete core resilience, (b) The W.O.A.T., (c) The G.O.A.T., (d) W.O.AT. coach behaviors, (e) G.O.A.T. coach behaviors, (f) The W.O.A.T., the G.O.A.T., and student-athlete resilience, (g) The effect of coach major stress on student-athlete resilience, and (h) The relational shift: From bad to better, good to great. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be used as a powerful method from which coaches can emotionally connect with the participants' stories in order to better understand how they might operate within the coach-athlete relationship to influence student-athlete resilience.

Book excerpt: Confidence (i.e., efficacy) plays a pivotal role in sport, whether it is athletes' confidence in themselves, their coaches, or in their collective group. Studies have shown that athletes' self-efficacy, other-efficacy, and collective efficacy beliefs lead to beneficial outcomes, such as enhanced performance, effort, and persistence. While athletes' perceptions of coach behaviors are associated with their efficacy beliefs, no known research has utilized observed coaching behaviors when exploring this relationship. The purpose of this study was to directly observe coaches and examine how their behaviors (i.e., instruction and feedback, positive and negative evaluation, autonomy support, and motivational climate) predict athletes' self-efficacy, other-efficacy, collective efficacy, and relation-inferred self-efficacy (RISE) beliefs. The sample consisted of three coaches, and 64 athletes from NCAA Division I and III sports. Teams included Division I Women's Soccer (n = 19), Division III Men's Lacrosse (n = 35), and Division III Football (n = 10). Coaches were recorded at a single practice, and their behaviors were coded using the Assessment of Coaching Tone observational coding system (Erickson and Cote, 2015). Athletes completed surveys measuring their self-efficacy, other-efficacy, collective efficacy, and RISE. Initial analyses showed that the coaches differed in behavior use. The football coach directed the most behaviors toward individuals, the soccer coach was the most autonomy supportive, and the lacrosse coach was the most mastery oriented. Furthermore, the football team reported higher self-efficacy than the soccer team, and higher collective efficacy than both the soccer and lacrosse teams. Multiple regression analyses revealed that none of the hypothesized coach behaviors were unique predictors of any forms of athlete efficacy beliefs. The findings contribute to existing literature on efficacy sources and provide directions for future research.
