Book excerpt: There has been an ever increasing percentage of beginning teachers who leave the teaching profession within the first five years. The overall purpose of this study was to gain insight into servant leadership characteristics and the impact on new teacher retention. The researcher implemented quantitative research methods to investigate the relationship between servant leadership of principals and beginning teacher's job satisfaction and intent to stay. Data was gathered via two surveys to collect data on beginning teacher perception of servant leadership characteristics displayed by their principal and servant leadership traits which contribute to beginning teacher job satisfaction and intent to stay. Participants included beginning teachers currently employed in south-central Missouri. For this study, a random sample was collected from beginning teachers with five years teaching experience or less. The participants included Missouri certified teachers at various grade levels and areas of certification. The study yielded a high rate of response from survey participants. Data analysis revealed a positive perception by beginning teachers of their principals' servant leadership characteristics. Correlations showed a statistically significant, positive relationship between servant leadership and beginning teacher job satisfaction. In addition, correlations showed a statistically significant, positive relationship between servant leadership and beginning teacher intent to stay. This study has implications for public school administration by highlighting servant leadership characteristics including empowerment, vision, agapao love, and humility.

It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret leadership literature and suggest new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the editors compile various studies examining the relationship between the leadership and thirteen organizational outcomes separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Book excerpt: SERVANT LEADERSHIP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION "Given the myriad of complex problems facing higher education, it is difficult to imagine that an administrator at any level of the institution could be effective without engaging in servant leadership. Higher education is a service industry and, consequently, this text is a must read for practicing administrators who are committed to effective leadership." MARY LOU HIGGERSON, Ph.D., vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of the college, Baldwin-Wallace College "Finally a thoughtful book on servant leadership with direct application to higher education. Includes many strategies for developing servant leadership in self, others, and organizations." DR. GARY L. FILAN, executive director, Chair Academy "With Servant Leadership for Higher Education Dan Wheeler brings the gauzy platitudes sometimes associated with servant leadership down to earth in a set of field-tested principles. I finished the book fantasizing about how much better off our colleges and universities would be if our leaders behaved like this!" JON WERGIN, professor of educational studies, Ph.D. in Leadership & Change Program, Antioch University "This is a must read for anyone thinking about becoming an academic leader. In the academy, it is not about command and control it's about serving your colleagues. Dan Wheeler's book 'nails it' as nothing is more critical to leaders than success in serving their colleagues." Book excerpt: Many teachers have become dissatisfied with their jobs, leaving their school district or the field of education to purse other careers outside of education. Recently, teacher attrition has been a problem for schools in Tennessee. The shortage of teachers in Tennessee led to the elimination of the Teacher Performance Assessment by the Tennessee State Board of Education for job-embedded educator licensure candidates. The combined SLQ and TJSQ survey was sent to 156 certified middle school teachers from four school districts located in northeast Tennessee. Thirty-six certified middle school teachers completed the survey. I investigated if there was a relationship between teachers’ perceived level of middle school principals’ servant leadership practices and teacher job satisfaction. I also investigated if the teachers’ perceived level of middle school principals’ servant leadership practices, years of teaching experience, or the highest academic degree attained (B.S., M.A., Ed.S, Doctorate) predicted the level of teacher job satisfaction in northeast Tennessee middle schools. I found teachers’ perception of the level of servant leadership by their principals did significantly predict job satisfaction for middle school teachers in northeast Tennessee. I also found neither years of teaching experience nor the highest academic degree attained (B.S., M.A., Ed.S, Doctorate) significantly predicted job satisfaction for middle school teachers in northeast Tennessee.

Book excerpt: Purpose: This correlation study determined the relationship between the level of servant-leadership practices of department chairs perceived by their foreign language teachers and the level of those same teachers' job satisfaction within the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) in Monterey, CA. Methodology: The study employed a quantitative method using descriptive and inferential statistical tests to answer the research questions. The sample population included 165 foreign language classroom teachers within the undergraduate basic language training at the DLIFLC. The data were collected through the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (Barbuto and Wheeler, 2006) and the Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (Lester, 1982). The bi-variate correlations, using a two-tailed Pearson test of correlation coefficients, were computed to assess the degree of relationship. Findings: although all aspects of servant leadership are important to teacher job satisfaction, the degree to which department chairs practice servant leadership skills does not relate identically to all factors of teacher job satisfaction. Teachers demonstrated that the most satisfying factor was the opportunity to be accountable for their own work and the opportunity to take part in policy and decision-making activities. Conclusions: The results of the study demonstrate the benefits of applying the servant leadership model to teachers' job satisfaction. Teachers need first to experience the feeling of being satisfied with their jobs in order to fully contribute to the overall well-being of the DLIFLC. Building a strong culture and practice of servant leadership at all levels would help the Institute to prosper. Recommendations: Provide continuing professional growth opportunities in the area of servant leadership with a focus on active listening, reflection and empathy. Conduct a study that compares servant leadership with other leadership styles to determine which leadership style teachers respond to with a higher degree of satisfaction. Some future studies should look at leadership correlated to teacher productivity and/or student results.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory case study was to explore teacher perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal and how that correlated with their job satisfaction. Thirty-two full-time elementary school teachers in one district located in the Southwestern United States participated in the study. Laub's Organizational Assessment (OLA) was used to measure their perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal, while the Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scale (MCMJSS) was utilized to measure their job satisfaction. Interviews were conducted with eight participants to gain more information related to the teacher's perception of this one principal and job satisfaction. Overall statistical analysis indicated no correlation between the teachers' perceptions of servant leadership characteristics of one principal and job satisfaction. The majority of the r values generated from the correlation of the OLA and the MCMJSS were greater than the level of significance of .05 (p value > ©Ł), indicating an acceptance of the null hypothesis. However, some domains of the teacher's perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal had significant, negative correlations to teacher job satisfaction. These included Displays Authenticity, Values People, Provides Leadership, and Shares Leadership. Findings from the in-depth interviews indicated that teachers wanted transparent and consistent leadership, and a principal who is approachable, authentic and who values the staff. Furthermore, teachers indicated they valued a comfortable and consistent school environment. The study may enhance principals' understanding of the perceptions teachers have about the way principals lead.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the relationship between employees' perceptions of servant leadership characteristics in their organizations and their level of personal job satisfaction. The perception of servant leadership was measured using the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) developed by Dr. James Laub. This study measured job satisfaction on two levels: overall job satisfaction and intrinsic job satisfaction. The Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scale (MCMJSS) was used to measure overall job satisfaction, and sections from both tools were combined to measure intrinsic job satisfaction. The participants' responses were further examined against demographic variables of gender, education level, age, level in the organization, and employment sector. Twelve organizations from both public and private sectors participated in this study. The study results indicated a significant relationship between perceptions of servant leadership and overall and intrinsic job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Servant leadership has been a trending topic of modern leadership theories and has been shown to be related to outcomes such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment, but it has been understudied, particularly in the public sector. Therefore, the relationship between servant leadership and job satisfaction was examined longitudinally in a public organization. Data from 515 employees from varying levels of employment within the organization supported previous research findings that servant leadership is positively linked to job satisfaction. However, the current study also revealed that the presence of servant leadership did not always translate to increased job satisfaction. Workforce and management personnel did not feel an increased level of job satisfaction even after the leaders had undergone servant leadership training. This study indicated that organizations should carefully consider the state of the organizational environment and whether other factors, such as budget restrictions, could influence job satisfaction more so than servant leadership.

Book excerpt: ...Current teacher attrition rates, the rate at which teachers abandon the field of education, supersede the rate at which new teachers are added to the field, creating a supply and demand gap that is not only detrimental to education but also quite costly. Teachers overwhelmingly cite dissatisfaction with school leadership and pressure related to school reform as reasons why they choose to leave the teaching profession. School leadership has been addressed as a measure to cournteract teacher job dissatisfaction. This quantitative research study utilized survey items to assess the correlation between teachers' perception of their principals' servant leadership attributes and teacher job satisfaction. Further, school climate was analyzed as a moderator of the relationship between principals' servant leadership attributes and teacher job satisfaction. ...

Book excerpt: This volume explores how educational leadership and administration (ELA) is constructed in the Middle East and North African region (MENA), and charts the development of ELA as a discipline. Against the backdrop of rapid growth and interest in the educational restructuring, educational reforms, policy and leadership landscape of the region, chapters investigate issues concerned with the production and utilization of knowledge in the field, and analyse the future of ELA in relation to the educational policies and practices in MENA countries. Featuring a broad range of geographically dispersed specialist contributors involved in leadership, policy, and administration, the volume ultimately sheds light on this little-researched area of study to demystify common tropes and misunderstandings surrounding ELA in the MENA region. This book will be of use to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students involved with international and comparative education, higher education management, and education policy and politics more broadly.
