Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for lnformation and Numerica/ Data Analysis and Synthesis (C/NDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficia! to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After fi ve years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of ali concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and App/ied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. Ali back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 21 (thesis year 1976) a total of 10,586 theses titles from 25 Canadian and 219 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the importance of color as a design element in clothing, color preferences of elderly women for clothes, including values and intensities, and the relation between color preferences and a) self-concept and b) clothing interest. The questionnaire included a modification of Cave's (1965) Color Questionnaire, Mason's (1954b) Self-Concept Questionnaire, and an adaptation of Sharpe's (1963) Clothing Interest/Importance Measure. Data of the participants age and color preferences during youth and middle age were also obtained. The sample was composed of 111 women 65 years of age and over from five independent living retirement homes in Columbus, Ohio. Frequency counts, percentages, central tendencies, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. The elderly women in the sample ranked style first and color second as clothing characteristics noticed when shopping. Blue was the preferred color of clothing along with a light, bright value/chroma combination. Red was the second preferred hue. Blue was the preferred hue for a dressy dress and casual dress for spring or summer and for a dressy dress for autumn or winter. Blue tied with red as the preferred color for a pantsuit or casual outfit for autumn or winter. Blue was found to be the preferred color during the participants' youth and middle age. Red was the second preferred hue during youth and middle age. No differences were found between color preferences and a) self-concept and b) clothing interest.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elderly population in our society is increasing both in number and proportion, with the life expectancy of women increasing more than men. Their needs have been given increased attention in recent years. Many studies have been done on clothing for older women, but few have dealt with the older woman's clothing practices for specific occasions and whether these practices have changed since she was middle-aged. The major purposes of this study were to determine the types of clothing women 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over wear for specific occasions compared to the types of clothing they wore when they were in their 40's; and to investigate the relationship of the older woman's present clothing behavior to: perception of self as young, middle-aged or elderly; occupation prior to retirement; marital status; education; degree of social participation; and sex-role concept. In addition, the investigator was interested in finding out if the elderly woman was wearing bifurcated garments, and whether certain physical characteristics were affecting her clothing choices. The sample was randomly selected from Benton County voter registration files and included a total of 102 women age 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. Information gathered from interviewing the subjects in their homes was recorded on data collection sheets, scored, coded, and then keypunched on cards to facilitate statistical analysis. The McNemar test for the significance of change was used to determine if there was a significant change in the clothing behavior of women 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. A chi-square test was used to investigate relationships between the present clothing behavior of women 65 and over and perception of self, occupation when 55-64, marital status, education, degree of social participation, and sex-role concept. A chisquare test was also used to compare education and sex-role concept. A significance level of .05 was selected for all statistical tests. The proportion of older women in Benton County represented in this study was 65-74 (3%), 75-84 (5%), and 85 and over (16%). The majority of the women perceived themselves as middle-aged, lived in a city (25,000-99,000), were widowed, and had a higher education level than the average in Oregon. It was found that 80.4% of the sample wear bifurcated garments. For each age group, the percentage wearing them was 94.1% (age 66-74), 88.2% (age 75-84), and 58.8% (age 85+). In addition, arthritis was the most frequently mentioned physical problem, and the preferred clothing characteristic for those who have physical problems is a garment with a front opening. There were many significant changes in the clothing behavior of older women from when they were in their 40's to the present. There were 30 significant changes for women 65-74, 22 for women 75-84, and 16 for women 85 and over. A total of 68 significant changes was found in 240 statistical tests, which was high considering that statistical tests were run for every occasion and category of dress even though some categories of dress did not fit the occasion (e.g., bathrobe for church). Inmost instances of significant change, women decreased the frequency with which they were wearing dresses or suits, and increased their frequency of wearing bifurcated garments. There was little relationship found between the present clothing behavior of women 65 and over and: perception of self as young, middleaged, or elderly; occupation at age 55-64; marital status; educational level; level of social participation; and sex-role concept.

Book excerpt: The aim of the study was to explore the possibility of relationships existing between the warmth and coolness of personal coloring, certain personality characteristics, and the choice of warmth or coolness in colors to be used for clothing. A review of the literature dealing with color preferences indicated that one group of individuals generally preferred warm, bright and intense colors, while another group preferred cool, dull colors. Furthermore, leading authorities in clothing selection suggested that individuals with warm coloring should select warm colors for personal enhancement, while those with cool coloring should select cool colors. There were also reports from research which indicated that individuals who were more outgoing, forward, warm, sociable, and extroverted were found to select warm, bright colors, while others who were more calm, quiet, cool, passive, and introverted selected cool, dull colors. It was, therefore concluded that there might be an interaction between personal coloring, personality, and color preference. In order to investigate these relationships a method was developed for the comparison of personal coloring to Munsell hues. These hues were divided into warm and cool tones of skin, eye, and hair color as well as into blonde and brunette hair coloring classifications. One hundred young women who met the standards set for the four personal coloring classifications - warm blonde, cool blonde, warm brunette, and cool brunette - were selected from the student population at the University. They were presented with three color preference tests which were designed to force a choice between a warm and a cool color fan and between a warm and a cool tone of two groups of six colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. They were asked to select the colors which they would prefer to have for their own clothing. The subjects were also presented with Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Test, from which the scores on factors A, C, F, and H were measured. These factors represented personality characteristics that were described as outgoing, forward, warm, emotional, happy-go-lucky, expressive, adventurous, active, and responsive versus reserved, cool, emotionally stable, calm, sober, serious, shy, and restrained. Some of these descriptive terms were found by other investigators to be associated with warm or cool colors. The analysis of the data collected revealed that, for the subjects in this study, the warmth or coolness of personal coloring was, in some instances, related to the choice of warmth or coolness in colors to be used for clothing. The difference in preferences between subjects warm in coloring and cool in coloring was found to give highly significant F ratios. A high percentage of the subjects who were cool in coloring selected the fan of cool colors and also selected more cool tones than warm tones of the colors red, green, blue, and purple. Almost one-half of the subjects who were warm in coloring selected the fan of warm colors. On the other tests slightly over one-half of the choices made by the warm subjects were for warm tones of the color; however, the warm tones of the cool colors were preferred less often than the cool tones. Hair coloring had little or no influence on the selection of warmth and coolness in colors although brunette subjects with warm coloring consistently selected a higher percentage of warmth in colors, with the exception of red, than did any other group. It was found that the warmth or coolness of personal coloring was not related to the personality characteristics measured, nor were there any significant relationships between the warmth and coolness of personal coloring, personality, and color preference. It was, therefore, concluded that for the subjects of this study the warmth and coolness of personal coloring was the only factor that had any relation to the preference for warmth and coolness in colors to be used for clothing.

Therefore adults aged over 60, the so-called 'grey market', have been the focus of several pieces of research. As the vigorous older population becomes more influential at the polls and in the market-place, we are continuously witnessing changes in government programs, housing, new products and media attention. The World Health Organization (WHO) is promoting a broad approach to aging that goes beyond the prevention and treatment of disease. WHO's "active aging" policies seek to extend healthy life expectancy, increase productivity and improve the quality of life among older people. But no systematic work has been done regarding the clothing preferences of elderly which indirectly boost their social and psychological life. Clothing preferences and problems of this age group have not received the consideration and study given to other age levels. Clothing designed especially for the elderly is non-existent inspite of the fact that every day a large number of men and women pass their sixty-fifth birthday and move into the great fraternity of the young olds.
