Australia’s security, economic and political ties with the United States are fundamental to Australia's future. The previous government significantly intensified Australia’s relationship with the United States, and it is now in the best shape it has ever been in. In this regard, the smoothness with which the US alliance has transferred to the Rudd Government, is outstanding to the strength of the alliance that John Howard had recognized with the United States of America. This is a permanent legacy that will help Australia and hopefully the government in greater strategic relationships. In the past eleven and half years, both defence and economic ties were improved, with the Australia-United States treaty of Defence Trade Co-operation and United States-Australia free trade agreement correspondingly. Therefore, the Australia-US relationship should only strengthen in the next ten years built on shared values, interest, mutual respect and similar outlooks on global affairs. In this regard, I would argue that Australia at the moment is more dependent on China for its growing economy but initiatives such as the annual bilateral strategic dialogue between both Countries which the previous government initiated last year is an important step towards developing closer security links in the future. I am also confident that Australia escalating economic relationships with China will coincide with the greatest dialogue on security matters, which should reflect shared mutual interests and values. On the other hand, the United States have been building the security umbrella in Asia-Pacific after World War II, from Japan and South Korea in the North, to Philippine, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand in the South to protect its security and interests in Asia-Pacific from communist threats like communist China.

Book excerpt: The central argument of this paper is that the decline of ANZUS as a strategic partnership has contributed to an erosion of New Zealand Defence Force capabilities and has left a security void in the South Pacific. ANZUS is now redundant and should be replaced. There is a greater Australian, New Zealand and United States focus on the Pacific Rim than ever before. The circumstances indicate that there is an overlap of national interests that do not equate to the current security standoff between New Zealand and the United States. Given the changing regional and global conditions in the post-cold war era, it appears that the Australia-New Zealand-United States alliance is in jeopardy of becoming irrelevant. From its inception ANZUS produced different perceptions of its meaning and intent in the minds of Australians, New Zealanders, and Americans. As a treaty it was a cornerstone to the security of Australia and New Zealand, but it was of low significance amongst the security priorities of the United States. Differences in perceptions regarding purpose and obligations were realized with the Australian and New Zealand commitments to the United States' cause in Vietnam, and then the 1985 nuclear policy standoff between New Zealand and the United States. The security strategy of the United States and the domestic anti-nuclear legislation and sentiment of New Zealand continue to oppose each other diametrically. It is in the national interests of Australia, New Zealand, and the United States for the framework of ANZUS to be adjusted against a vastly different backdrop compared to that of the treaty signing. New Zealand has the most to gain and the least to lose from such an adjustment. It is therefore New Zealand who must voice the overtures for a "life after ANZUS." Abrogating the ANZUS alliance is long overdue, with the most appropriate replacement option being a series of three bilateral agreements between the ANZUS partners.

Australia shares many cultural traditions and values with the United States and has been a treaty ally since the signing of the Australia-New Zealand-United States (ANZUS) Treaty in 1951. Australia made major contributions to the allied cause in the First and Second World Wars, and the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Australia is also a close intelligence partner through the "Five Eyes" group of nations. U.S. Marines are conducting rotational deployments in northern Australia. This initiative and others demonstrate the closeness of the relationship. A traditional cornerstone of Australia's strategic outlook is the view that the United States is Australia's most important strategic partner and is a key source of stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Australian decision-makers have also believed that Australia does not have to choose between the United States and China. Some former Australian political leaders and former government officials, as well as media reports, have expressed concern about where Australia's relationship with the United States may be headed under the Trump Administration.While Australia has a complex array of international relations, its geopolitical context is to a large extent defined by its economic relationship with China and its strategic relationship with the United States. Australia's political leadership believes it can have constructive trade relations with China while maintaining its close strategic alliance relationship with the United States. However, shifts in the geostrategic dynamics of Asia are leading regional states such as Australia to hedge, increasingly with other Asian states, against the relative decline of U.S. engagement in the region.
