The man has a few redneck characteristics & the woman has definite high maintenance traits. In addition, she has a lot of "Gracie Allen" mannerisms. The book is a series of short chapters about funny events that have occurred in the thirty years of putting up with each other. You won't be much smarter when you finish the book, but you're guaranteed to get a few good laughs. Pearle, a widow, said she is requesting that a book be placed in her casket. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details my personal journey through "relationship hell" and the ten lessons I learned while on the lengthy trip. Ladies, think of me as the one friend who will even tell you the stuff you don't really want to hear. Guys, think of me as that one friend you seek when you must have a woman's opinion. I am about to share my life secrets with you, to give you my pure chick perspective. I'm not an expert, and there's no magic formula for relationship success. I'm sharing my experiences to make you stop and think! So dive in and avoid learning these lessons THE HARD WAY! Lesson #1: Men & women really ARE from different planets! Newsflash no one is going to think, react, or behave just like you. I share the "big three" ways in which men and women are particularly different, and five rules each for guys and girls to use to make life with your partner easier! Lesson #2: I AM a high maintenance woman and that's OK! Finally a real definition for the code name "high maintenance"! Find out why I'm high maintenance, how to determine if you are, and why it can be a positive thing! Lesson #3: Live in the reality, NOT the fantasy! Folks, you can see anything you want if you look hard enough. Learn how to face the reality of what your relationship "truly is" and how to avoid getting stuck in the potential of what it "could be". Lesson #4: Beware of the M.O.D.! The Master of Deception. He's out there. He lies. He's really good at it! He'll say or do anything to get what he wants. Learn ten things to identify someone operating in M.O.D. mode and don't let this happen to you! Lesson #5: Sex ¹ Love! It's a jagged little pill to swallow, but men and women view sex quite differently. Learn how I changed my entire perspective and was finally able to enjoy the best sex of my life! I'll share four patterns that kept me from sexual freedom and give you some hints to keep you sex life smokin'! Lesson #6: Give Good "C"! Communication. Don't underestimate its power. Strong communication can make you an untouchable duo. Lack of communication can force you back to the land of singles! Men and women communicate differently, so learn how to speak a language your partner will understand. Lesson #7: Love DOESN'T conquer all! Darn those fairy tales and their blasted happy endings! It just takes more than love to make a relationship work. Don't let those fabulous feelings blind you to the practical factors that also must be intact to help your relationship last. Lesson #8: There is no "Y" in love! There is no logic, no reason, no analytical process to matters of the heart. The heart doesn't choose a partner because it makes logical sense. The heart chooses because it feels good. Share my turmoil as I discover the battle that ensues when the heart and the head disagree! Lesson #9: Breaking up is HARD to do! I've taken four trips to the breakup torture chamber. Join me in the Temple of Pain twice as the victim and twice as the punisher. Compare these dramatically different perspectives, and better understand key dynamics to help you exit as gracefully as possible! Lesson #10: Time is a 4-letter word! I hate the cliché, "Just give it time," but unfortunately, time is exactly what it takes to heal a broken heart. It should be right up there with the rest of those ugly four-letter words! I share my RP2R process for pain management and the things I've done to deal with the agony of time passing. Enjoy! b.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary culture, the stereotypical trappings of “redneckism” have been appropriated for everything from movies like Smokey and the Bandit to comedy acts like Larry the Cable Guy. Even a recent president, George W. Bush, shunned his patrician pedigree in favor of cowboy “authenticity” to appeal to voters. Whether identified with hard work and patriotism or with narrow-minded bigotry, the Redneck and its variants have become firmly established in American narrative consciousness. This provocative book traces the emergence of the faux-Redneck within the context of literary and cultural studies. Examining the icon’s foundations in James Fenimore Cooper’s Natty Bumppo—“an ideal white man, free of the boundaries of civilization”—and the degraded rural poor of Erskine Caldwell’s Tobacco Road, Matthew Ferrence shows how Redneck stereotypes were further extended in Deliverance, both the novel and the film, and in a popular cycle of movies starring Burt Reynolds in the 1970s and ’80s, among other manifestations. As a contemporary cultural figure, the author argues, the Redneck represents no one in particular but offers a model of behavior and ideals for many. Most important, it has become a tool—reductive, confining, and (sometimes, almost) liberating—by which elite forces gather and maintain social and economic power. Those defying its boundaries, as the Dixie Chicks did when they criticized President Bush and the Iraq invasion, have done so at their own peril. Ferrence contends that a refocus of attention to the complex realities depicted in the writings of such authors as Silas House, Fred Chappell, Janisse Ray, and Trudier Harris can help dislodge persistent stereotypes and encourage more nuanced understandings of regional identity. In a cultural moment when so-called Reality Television has turned again toward popular images of rural Americans (as in, for example, Duck Dynasty and Moonshiners), All- American Redneck reveals the way in which such images have long been manipulated for particular social goals, almost always as a means to solidify the position of the powerful at the expense of the regional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen through the eyes of Sam Venable, the world is indeed bizarre and filled with nuttiness. The archives of the Knoxville News Sentinel offer ample evidence that Venable is a bit of the former and has made a career out of drawing attention to the latter. For his latest book, Venable has gathered and organized 139 of his newspaper columns—his biggest collection yet—to create a trove of wit and wisdom. In the spirit of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” he points a finger at human nature, the environment, civil rights and wrongs, and an eclectic mix of other targets, drawing our attention to the foibles, failings, and just plain absurdities that surround us all. As a native son and treasured institution in East Tennessee, Venable has earned the right to poke fun at its local history, habits, and happenings. He takes full, loving advantage of this license in essays such as “How to Tawlk Good,” “Shall We Gather with a Reptile,” and “The Good, the Bad, the Kudzu.” He takes on the government in a section titled “A Two-Ring Circus with Elephants and Donkeys,” and in another called “Still Waiting for Y2K,” he offers up “A Lesson in Dollars and Sense” and “Blowing the Budget for Bowser.” Some have called him a modern-day Mark Twain, others the Dave Barry of Knoxville; but while there may be some similarities, Sam Venable is wonderfully unique. He sees—and sees through—the pervasive silliness and stupidity in our world. It evokes wonder in him, and with many a deft turn of phrase, he interprets that wonder for us. Warning! Book excerpt: Redneck Boy in the Promised Land is Ben Jones’s hilarious, uplifting life story of escaping the rail yards and finding success in the unlikeliest places. As a child, Jones called a dingy railroad shack with no electricity or indoor plumbing home. An unabashed Southern redneck from a "likker drinkin’, hell-raisin’" family, Jones grew up in the depressed railroad docks outside of Portsmouth, Virginia, and spent most of his days dreaming about where the tracks out of town could take him. That he would go on to become a beloved television icon on The Dukes of Hazzard and a firebrand two-term Congressman is a story that no one could have ever seen coming . . . least of all ol’ "Cooter" himself. Written with naked honesty and wry humor, Redneck Boy in the Promised Land is one good ol’ boy’s remarkable tale of falling flat on his face, picking himself up, and finding his way to the American dream-while fighting for civil rights, the plight of the working class, "real" Southern culture, and the rights of rednecks everywhere. From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: Today, when companies and customers are faced with an infinite number of messages, the word "relevance" has taken on a new meaning and dimension. We know that relevance matters, but what does that mean exactly? Andy Coville guides leaders and executives toward the realization that if they can focus on a single, guiding principle--a magnetic one--that permeates their brand or company, customers will not only engage but change thinking and behavior in turn. Relevance takes us through the dimensions of relevance--both qualitative and quantitative--in order to find the starting point on the Relevance Scale: where we are and where to go from here. The book walks the reader through the elements of staying relevant as well as the circumstances that contribute to establishing a relevance platform. The author offers many examples as well as explaining messaging strategies. Whether you are working with a consumer product, a nonprofit, or a B2B company, Andy Coville believes you, your brand, or your company have the power to change and influence behavior and make an impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.
