Book excerpt: The book is a historical fiction. This means that the characters are fictional as are their exploits, but the story line is based on historical fact. Hauptman Otto Kruger is assigned to a special Luftwaffe fighter group tasked with shooting down American bombers even if he must resort to ramming. In order to achieve this goal, he devises a number of innovative techniques, which include tethered bombs and eight-inch mortars. Lt. Vernon Ghest of the 302nd fighter squadron, while flying his war-weary P-51C Mustang with the distinctive red tail markings of the 332nd fighter group, becomes Ottos nemesis. When Vernon and another airman from the Ninety-Ninth FS are eventually forced down, they present the Germans with a new problem as they attempt to insert the black airman into the all-white POW camp. Eventually, Vernon and his companion devise and implement an ingenious escape plan that allows them to escape to once more to fight the Luftwaffe in the skies over Germany.
Book Synopsis Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals by : Larry Vogelnest
Download or read book Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals written by Larry Vogelnest and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals provides an update on Australian mammal medicine. Although much of the companion volume, Medicine of Australian Mammals, is still relevant and current, there have been significant advances in Australian mammal medicine and surgery since its publication in 2008. The two texts together remain the most comprehensive source of information available in this field. This volume is divided into two sections. The first includes comprehensive chapters on general topics and topics relevant to multiple taxa. Several new topics are presented including: wildlife health in Australia and the important role veterinarians play in Australia’s biosecurity systems; medical aspects of native mammal reintroductions and translocations; disease risk analysis; wildlife rehabilitation practices in Australia with an emphasis on welfare of animals undergoing rehabilitation; management of overabundant populations; immunology; and stress physiology. The second section provides updates on current knowledge relevant to specific taxa. Several appendices provide useful reference data and information on clinical reference ranges, recommended venipuncture sites, chemical restraint agent doses and regimens, a drug formulary and dental charts. Written by Australian experts, Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals is clinically oriented, with emphasis on practical content with easy-to-use reference material. It is a must-have for veterinarians, students, biologists, zoologists and wildlife carers and other wildlife professionals. This volume also complements, updates and utilises the resources of other books such as Radiology of Australian Mammals (Vogelnest and Allan 2015), Pathology of Australian Native Wildlife (Ladds 2009), Haematology of Australian Mammals (Clark 2004) and Australian Mammals: Biology and Captive Management (Jackson 2003), all CSIRO Publishing publications.
Book Synopsis Saving the Tasmanian Devil by : Carolyn Hogg
Download or read book Saving the Tasmanian Devil written by Carolyn Hogg and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tasmanian devil is threatened by Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a transmissible form of cancer that has reduced the population by over 80%. Persecution, extreme climate events, vehicle collision and habitat destruction also put pressure on this endangered species. The recovery effort to save the Tasmanian devil commenced over 15 years ago as a collaborative initiative between the Tasmanian government, the Australian government, the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia, and many research institutions. Saving the Tasmanian Devil documents the journey taken by partner organisations in discovering what DFTD is, the effect it has on wild devil populations, and the outcomes achieved through research and management actions. Chapters describe all aspects of devil conservation, including the captive devil populations, applied pathology, immunology and genetic research findings, adaptive management, and the importance of advocacy and partnerships. This book will provide management practitioners and conservation scientists with insight into the complexities of undertaking a program of this scale, and will also be of value to researchers, students and others interested in conservation.

Download or read book Winging Home written by Harold Rhenisch and published by Brindle and Glass. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In British Columbia's remote and exotic Cariboo Plateau, "Everything is slow. Everything is happening at the same speed, which is no speed at all." Harold Rhenisch has spent eleven years watching birds every day from his house on the shore of 108 Lake—at this speed, but you wouldn’t know it from reading Winging Home. Known as "one of Canada's master prose stylists," Rhenisch dissects avian behaviour with the ear of a poet and the mouth of a standup comedian. His blackbirds are a jug band in full flight, his robins drunken bachelors on a jag, and his eagles decrepit, stumblebum scavengers. With lively illustrations by noted bird artist Tom Godin, Winging Home: A Palette of Birds is more than just writing about the natural world. It is a lyrical, evocative memoir of life in the Cariboo that crackles with humorous, often startling observations of birds and men set amidst the wild beauty of British Columbia.
