Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. It may be that these limits will disappoint you. You must understand at once that I have nothing sensational to tell you. I have not come here to hurl thunderbolts against the Bolsheviks, who are used nowadays much as bugbears are used to frighten children. And again I am sorry not to be able to please those who came here to hear a Bolshevik, because I am not one, in spite of the rumours which have been put about. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. The peoples of the West are uneasy about the Communist experiment, accompanied as it is by a forced implanting of atheism such as the world has never yet known - an experiment carried on in a vast country which is little known to, and little understood by, the West. What must be of great interest is the psycholo gical problem How was it possible for Holy Russia to be turned into an arsenal of militant atheism? How is it that a people who are religious by their very structure and live exclu sively by faith have proved to be such a fruitful field for anti-religious propaganda To explain that, to understand Russian anti-religious psy chology, one must have an insight into the religious psychology of the Russian people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rasputin and the Russian Revolution Sian Court was published the Romanoffs were reign ing and, considering the fact that she was living in Russia at the time, the author of it, had her identity become known, would have risked being subjected to grave annoyances, and even being sent to that dis tant Siberia where Nicholas II is at present exiled. It was therefore deemed advisable to produce that work as a posthumous one, and Count Paul Vassili was represented as having died before the publication of his Memoirs. This however was not the case, be cause On the contrary he went on collecting infor mation as to all that was taking place at the Russian Court as well as in the whole of Russia, and, consign ing this information to a diary, he went on writing. If one remembers, Count Vassili distinctly foresaw and prophesied in his book most of the things that have occurred since it was published. This fact will perhaps give added interest to the present account Of the Russian Revolution which now sees the light of day for the first time. Though devoid of every thing sensational or scandalous it will prove interest ing to those who have cared for the other books of Count Vassili, for it contains nothing but the truth, and has been compiled chiefly out of the narrations of the principal personages connected in some way.
