Book Synopsis The Solar Chromosphere and Corona: Quiet Sun by : R.G. Athay
Download or read book The Solar Chromosphere and Corona: Quiet Sun written by R.G. Athay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread tendency in solar physics to divide the solar atmosphere into separate layers and to distinguish phenomena of solar activity from phenomena of the quiet Sun emphasizes the wide ranging diversity of physical conditions and events occurring in the solar atmosphere. This diversity spans the range from a neutral, essentially quiescent atmosphere to a highly ionized, violently convective atmosphere; from a domain in which magnetic field effects are unimportant to a domain in which the magnetic pressure exceeds the gas pressure, and from a domain in which the particle motions are Maxwellian to a domain in which an appreciable fraction of the particles is accelerated to relativistic energies. It is now widely recognized that the chromosphere and corona have a common origin in the mechanical energy flux generated in the hydrogen convection zone lying beneath the photosphere. Furthermore, magnetic field phenomena appear to be as vital to the structure of th~ quiet Sun as to the active Sun. For these reasons it appears desirable to present a unified treatment of the entire solar atmosphere, both active and quiet, in a single volume. On the other hand, such a treatise must be very long if it is to avoid being superficial, and it is very difficult for a single author to write authoritatively on such a wide range of topics.
Book Synopsis Solar Wind Nine: Proceedings of the Ninth International Solar Wind Conference by : Shadia Rifai Habbal
Download or read book Solar Wind Nine: Proceedings of the Ninth International Solar Wind Conference written by Shadia Rifai Habbal and published by American Inst. of Physics. This book was released on 1999-06-24 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Solar Wind Nine Conference was the ninth in the series of solar wind conferences established in 1964 by Dr. Marcia Neugebauer to provide a forum for the interaction between solar physicists and space physicists interested in the origin and evolution of the solar wind. One of the scientific goals of the conference was to reflect the importance of the synergistic interaction between theory, numerical modeling and simulations, in situ measurements and remote sensing observations, in the exploration of the solar wind. Indeed, the opportunity provided by the many concurrent missions Ulysses, Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, SPARTAN, WIND, and ACE, which probe the Sun and interplanetary space from different vantage points, provided very rich material for the contributions. The presentations included invited reviews and contributed talks as well as poster presentations. This conference took place almost 40 years after Parkers prediction of the existence of the solar wind.

Book Synopsis Advances in Solar Physics by : G. Belvedere
Download or read book Advances in Solar Physics written by G. Belvedere and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a very readable survey "The Sun Today" by J.-C. Pecker. It is followed by thorough reviews from leading experts covering theory and observations. The focus shifts from the solar core, studied via neutrino emissions and helioseismology, through the interface regions where it is believed the large-scale magnetic fields are generated, to the corona, where most of the high temperature phenomena characteristic of this region may be studied directly. As energetic particles play such a vigorous role in this part of the sun, a separate session was devoted to their transport and storage in the corona.
