Those who insist on this rule of government con duct are called bigots, because they refuse to add to the studies of the elementary schools training in the catechism and formularies of a certain church and that this be done at the expense of the taxpayers generally. To answer, That it is the business of the State to see that every boy and girl can read and write, and that each church look after their sectarian tuition, and do so at their own cost and not use public money, is' to provoke a shower of epithets of intoler. Download or read book Québec written by Emmanuelle Arpin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2025-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Québec’s distinctive approach to health and social policy is predicated on its unique social history in Canada, which has allowed it to spearhead many innovations within the Canadian health care landscape, inspiring not only other provinces but also the federal government. Québec: A Health System Profile provides an in-depth, descriptive analysis of Québec’s health care system. The book examines the organization of the health care system, financing mechanisms, health and human resources, infrastructure, and service delivery models and describes the major health care reforms in Québec that have occurred since the start of the twenty-first century. It also offers commentary on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Québec’s health care system throughout. Presenting foundational health services concepts in relation to Québec, along with the complementing socio-historical approach adopted to describe Québec’s unique health care system, the book equips readers with invaluable insights and tools to navigate the complexities of ongoing health care policy challenges and to envision possible solutions forward for Québec’s health care system.
Book Synopsis Decentralization and Intrastate Struggles by : Kristin M. Bakke
Download or read book Decentralization and Intrastate Struggles written by Kristin M. Bakke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no one-size-fits-all decentralized fix to deeply divided and conflict-ridden states. One of the hotly debated policy prescriptions for states facing self-determination demands is some form of decentralized governance - including regional autonomy arrangements and federalism - which grants minority groups a degree of self-rule. Yet the track record of existing decentralized states suggests that these have widely divergent capacity to contain conflicts within their borders. Through in-depth case studies of Chechnya, Punjab and Québec, as well as a statistical cross-country analysis, this book argues that while policy, fiscal approach, and political decentralization can, indeed, be peace-preserving at times, the effects of these institutions are conditioned by traits of the societies they (are meant to) govern. Decentralization may help preserve peace in one country or in one region, but it may have just the opposite effect in a country or region with different ethnic and economic characteristics.
Book Synopsis The Canadian Party System by : Richard Johnston
Download or read book The Canadian Party System written by Richard Johnston and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian party system is a deviant case among the Anglo-American democracies. It has too many parties, it is susceptible to staggering swings from election to election, and its provincial and federal branches often seem unrelated. Unruly and inscrutable, it is a system that defies logic and classification – until now. In this political science tour de force, Richard Johnston makes sense of the Canadian party system. With a keen eye for history and deft use of recently developed analytic tools, he articulates a series of propositions underpinning the system. Chief among them was domination by the centrist Liberals, stemming from their grip on Quebec, which blocked both the Conservatives and the NDP. He also takes a close look at other peculiarities of the Canadian party system, including the stunning discontinuity between federal and provincial arenas. For its combination of historical breadth and data-intensive rigour, The Canadian Party System is a rare achievement. Its findings shed light on the main puzzles of the Canadian case, while contesting the received wisdom of the comparative study of parties, elections, and electoral systems elsewhere.

Book excerpt: "For over eighty years, the Association Henri Capitant has endeavored to spread, update, and promote "continental law," or the law of the European continent. In pursuance of these objectives, the Association has decided to create the "Library of the Association Henri Capitant." The many different groups of the Association have been asked to outline and explain the most salient features of their legal system in a series of books, written in French, structured around a uniform table of contents and within a set limit of pages. Thereby, a reader will be able to know and compare the foundations and fundamental features of each one of these legal systems. With this purpose in mind, The Legal System of Québec, like the other books in this collection, presents to the reader the main features of the history of its legal system, its sources of law, its constitutional framework, its legal actors, its criminal law, its law of persons, family law, property law, law of contract, law on delictual liability, quasi-contracts, business entities, and labor-employment law"--
