Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary-School Speller IN recent years a number of careful investigations have been made as to the extent of the vocabularies that are employed by adults in personal and business correspondence, and also by pupils in the writ ten work required in Elementary schools. The results of these investigations indicate that in these several fields the number of different words employed is decidedly less than has been generally supposed. Accordingly, many educa tors have suggested that the vocabulary of the spelling book should be limited to the words in practical use in composition, and that ample provision should be made for their imten sive study in the regular drill work of the schoolroom. The elementary-school Speller has been prepared in response to these suggestions. It is planned to cover the formal work in spelling and word-study for the grades below the high school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Speller: Third Book, Grades Five and Six These Every-day Spelling books have been prepared in view of the results of extensive experience with the teaching of spelling, and also of the conclusions of recent investigations respecting (1) the words which should be taught in the ele mentary school because they are likely to be used by the majority of people in every-day life; (2) the ways in which a pupil learns to spell most readily and effectively; and (3) the crucial parts of difficult words to which the learner needs to give particular attention. At the close of the Second, Third and Fourth Books there is given a detailed presentation of all the principles and methods upon which the books are based, and the teacher is referred to this statement for information re garding the grounds upon which words have been chosen for the different grades, and the various methods of teaching them. It will be enough to say here that the authors have endeavored to make spelling books which are closely adapted to the practi cal needs of pupils and teachers in elementary schools. Every word included in these books has been carefully examined with respect alike to the probability of its being of practical value to pupils, and the methods of presenting -it so that it can be read ily and accurately used when once learned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common School Spelling Book American school children, from the descendants of the early colonists to the little immigrants of today, come from many races. These races do not attach the same sounds to the letters of the English alphabet. But if American chil dren may see in the pages of their first spelling book the usual combinations of English sounds in words, if they are made to feel the strength and beauty and natural growth of these words, they will develop instinctively a kind of language patriotism. They will come to know that the languages of their parents are represented just as truly in the structure of the English language as their races are rep resented in the American people. These different race-elements in our language have brought with them their conflicting systems of spelling. Nevertheless, in spite of this conflict, the majority of Eng lish words are fairly regular in spelling; that is, they are spelled according to rational principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical High School Speller What are the words most commonly misspelled by the aver age high school pupil In an endeavor to solve this problem, two thousand letters, with five postal cards in each, were sent to representative high schools in every state in the United States, requesting the heads of the various departments to report the words most commonly misspelled in their classes. From the many thousand replies, this text-book has been compiled. The first word in Lesson I was sent in by seven hundred high school teachers; the other words in this lesson show, by their order, the frequency with which they appear in the replies. No word has been considered unless suggested by at least two teachers. This book, then, built on the judgment of those best qualified to know - the teachers themselves - con tains only the words most frequently misspelled by the average high school pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graded School Speller, Vol. 2 Q graded both in respect to the words and the thought, and is pre sented in a way to interest and instruct. The pupil is conscious of the meaning and the use Of the word as he learns to spell it. If the context does not make the meaning of a word clear to a pupil, it does enable him to use his dictionary intelligently in getting the meaning Of the word. By means of this method of presentation words are reviewed, many Of the more difficult ones repeatedly. This review is not a mere mechanical repetition of the isolated word; each time the word recurs it is in use. This is the most effective kind of review. At the same time the meaning of the word is becoming, for the child, broader, fuller, and more clearly defined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Word Book Let every student have a book. It takes too much time to copy lists from the board; besides, students often copy words as they com mouly misspell them. Do not burden yourself with the daily correction of spelling papers. The following is a satisfactory method of handling the work in Part One. Let the words be pronounced to the class and written in ink in a spelling blank (costing five cents), no word to be erased or written twice. Let the students exchange books and check the errors as the teacher spells. Let each mark the standing and write his name above the work he has checked. Collect these books and look them over carefully the first two or three days of the term and at irregular times thereafter, perhaps once a month, to get the stand ing. An unchecked error counts against the student who has failed to check it. Once a month each student should make a list of all the words he has misspelled and write them in his spelling blank for special study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School Speller and Word-Book A Spelling-Book is a necessity. It should be used every day in every grade of school, keeping pace with advancing reading. No study is of more importance than this study of words. It includes enunciation, pronunciation, reading, conversation, writing, a knowledge of the meaning of words, and accuracy in using them. There are certain difficulties in spelling which are well known to be common and almost universal. So far as these difficulties are, or should be, in the pupil's vocabulary, it is surely better to meet them directly and persistently, than to wait for them to occur incidentally and at long intervals in general composition. What is needed is more teaching spelling, not merely spelling practice. A great many common words of one and two syllables are habitually mispronounced by pupils. Correct pronunciation is the basis of good reading. This foundation must be early laid and firmly established by persistent and systematic effort. Something more than mere telling is necessary to break up habits of mispronunciation. An easy, practical method of marking words so as to indicate their pronunciation can be learned and applied by very young children. Such a system is second only to the living teacher's voice, and in some respects it is its superior. By it the Eye is enabled to assist the Ear in determining whether or not the Lips perform their office property.
