Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Handling Men in the Army This little book is not to be regarded as a treatise on psychology; its purpose is frankly a practical one, and the plan out of which the work has grown originated in the army camps. The experience of the junior author (Lieut. David) in different training camps in which men are being prepared for the various duties of warfare led him to see the need, as he interpreted the situation, of a simple, rather practical presentation of the underlying psychological principles of handling men, one which should be especially designed to aid the newly commissioned and the non-commissioned officer. Consultation with various experienced army officers and a number of prominent citizens strengthened his conviction that a little book of this kind would render very real service in the present crisis, which has forced war upon us on so large a scale that officers must be prepared for their important duties in a comparatively short length of time. The field covered has been defined in general by what we have regarded as of most practical importance in view of present conditions. Since this is the first book of which we know that deals entirely with the psychological aspects of the training and handling of men in the army, it is necessarily incomplete and tentative in many respects, but it was thought best to begin with the more general and probably the most important aspects of the subject and to leave for later special studies and developments the problems relating to various particular phases of the field, most of which will have to be worked out under experimental conditions for which special provision is necessary.
